I guess my point is that we know enough today to clearly see our evolutionary origin, as well as fully appreciate the inspiration and similar evolution of all mythologies. It is for this reason that religion has become it's own opposite: saying nothing at all about the nature of our world, but a very great deal about the person endorsing it. The willingness to so utterly discount the staggering evidence for an understandable universe suggests that religious people seek not truth, but power.

What both sides seem to be unable to grasp is that Genesis was written by people of the 1200s BC for the people of 1200s BC. When the early Church Fathers held the Ecumenical Councils, they readily incorporated the available science of the time. Modern protestants have thrown the Church Fathers out the window and resort to shallow interpretations.

My replies simply refute that it is power. Using the given examples as the only examples are narrow-minded and would limit the extent of attainable knowledge. Imagine if scientist were like creationists... "If Darwin didn't say it, it must not be true." We would never have made such scientific advances because no one would agree with thinking outside of the box. The examples I gave are only a few. There are all sorts of different reasons, which you should not assume are my personal reasons.

That won't be easy. But you did get me to think about what exactly is wrong with these folks, and I wrote a blog essay to take a shot at explaining it; by asserting that their mythology is true, they actually invert its utility. How what they perceive as god's power is actually dependent on god not being real. Over the past few years I've become close friends with an ex-minister from Menlo Park, Walter Gerber. But then, he's nothing like most of the folks that advocate their religions here.

But there are. There's an account of someone in the army who had an encounter with a roadside bomb and lived. His superior officers tried to needle him into thanking god, but he thanked modern armor technology.
The result was a long chain of harassment for being an atheist in the army.

If you mean to say that the lack of a belief in a god (as in atheism) has never started a war then yes, that is exactly what I am saying.
It's true that religion and ideology are alike on some points. However, if you have ever read the Communist Manifesto you would know that religion is not viewed as a particularly bad thing, just irrelevant. You do not have to be an atheist to be a communist.

Atheism is not a necessity, but is emphasized in order to break any other allegiances. It has been used as a pretext to kill Orthodox bishops, priests, and laity, just as it was used to kill the Tibetans, simply because hey would refuse complete allegiance.
