Always been a Genius from Bumpkinass Texas...and amazed at his extremely LOW profile....Jeez, that album is part of my very soul and I ain't EVEN from Texas.....(longass story there). When the album came out this guy was already a Folk Hero.
and Painted Lady was covered by every bar band from Gilmer to Goshen, Elaveen to ElPaso.
I tried growing a melon patch in my garden, and all I could think of as I watched their progress was this song. Then we got a new puppy, and he destroyed them before I could get any of that juicy fruit. Dang! Great song anyways!
OMG!!! I can't believe my eyes ... I have not heard these fabulous songs for a bazillion years and here they are! Thank you so much ... I adore this guy, I wore out a vinyl too many years ago.
Do you know if he's ever going to re-release this album as a CD? Would love to find it somewhere.
I grew up listening to my parent's record of Willis. In fact, my Dad and I danced to one of his songs for the 'father & daughter' dance at my wedding. Good memories sitting on the porch listening to his music.
As a friend of Willis' I can answer some questions. a) He is in an "open E minor" tuning. b) Yes he uses a Fishman Rare Earth pick-up. c) He is playing a Martin D-18 vintage 1943. He recently put me on to a 1956 D-18 and it has superb tone also. Good guy, loyal friend and phenomenal talent.
I think he just tunes his D string to an E note and I'm guessing that the pick up is a Fishman Rare Earth pickup that fits in the soundhole. They look just like that but like I said, I'm just guessing.

@blueswater4
I think the tuning is EBEGBE (E minor) low to high.
