there is a hidden extra faction called the Firaxians they can be accessed by opening the Faction Editor, going to "Load Faction", and either typing in "sid" (to set Sid Meier as faction leader) or "brian" (to set Brian Reynolds as faction leader) as the faction to load. Once loaded and saved, the Firaxians can be added to a game

I never really understood why they added all these factions, or aliens to be honest. Alpha Centauri was all about an inter-human fight, the quest for perfection/exploration/underst­anding. Alien Crossfire just did away with all of this and went "lol, lets add humanoid aliens and a bunch of factions that have crippled societal formation". If there's one faction that does fit it's Domai because he has a logical basis for his faction but the rest don't fit or would only fit later on in the game.

@CommanderElerium There are Rumors that they had all human factions originally but took out half because of resource constraints and because seven factions can represent all "mindsets" already. Most "ideals" that the new factions have has already been in the original seven. The other reason was that these "new factions" are not as well balanced. In fact some new factions are rather overpowered in the hands of a competent player.

Don't forget that the original game hints at aliens visiting and conquering Chiron before the humans landed. Take a survey team to the Borehole cluster, and you'll find out that another species made them :-)

If you haven't done so already, you should install the Windows2000/XP compatibility patch for AR. Also changing the value of a variable in the Alpha Centauri.ini file helps. I don't remember it exactly, but I think was something like "ForceOldVoxelAlgorithm=0". Change the 0 to a 1.

The back story goes something like this: On the planet there is a lost nexus of energy known as the legendary 6th Manifold. Its location was lost in a great war held a long time ago between the two alien factions, the usurpers who want to tap into the power of the nexus to become godlike beings, and the caretakers who want to preserve the manifold in its natural state. You can watch the games intro movie to learn how they arrived on the planet.

Why does everyone keep saying University of Planet is the best fraction? They are not. The Peacekeeping Forces is the best fraction.

And using your money right, Morgan Industries are also better than University.

The Spartan Federation is the Strongest Faction in the Game. Think about it like this, every faction is a body that has focused on one bodily attribute more than anything. The University focuses on Knowledge and that is Brains, the Spartan Federation focuses on Military and that's Muscle.

Spartans fall too far behind cash/turn-wise. They're strong early but Peacekeepers/Gaians controls the endgame in my opinion, depends alot on your playingstyle as well though so nothing is absolute. :-)

The Nautilus Pirates were reasonably OK. That's the only one of the new factions that I'd play as a human. The others are good to give the AI, to beef up their game a bit. I particularly like encountering the alien factions... it's always scary!

Uh, this isn't a saga or anything like that :D. It's just audio blurbs, pictures and text I edited together from a strategy videogame called "Sid Meier's Alien Crossfire" (which is an expansion to "Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri") and added some music from Darude. It's supposed to present these 7 new factions, what drives their leader (audio blurb), what they look like (pictures), and what attributes they have (text).

I copy-pasted all the blurbs directly from the games .txt files (in the Cybernetic consciousness' case "cyborg.txt") and if you have Alien Crossfire, you can read on screen that it's "The illogical" when choosing a faction for a new game.
