he cant believe how easy it was, he put the gun into his face...bang! so much blood for such a tiny little hole, problems do have solutions you know? a lifetime of fucking things up fixed...in one...determined...flash
The discussion of the greatest live tours of all time begins and ends with the 1994 Self Destruct tour. Every time I see something from it I almost hate myself for only being 12 years old at the time.
Black and white the whole time and then when that red crimson blood flowed over the top of that coffin, I almost pissed myself. Amazing, I saw them 4 times in 94 still unrivaled as far as live shows go.
Sadly, it's easier to identify yourself with a prefabricated image than to identify exactly what you want in life. We're "trapped" out here in the real world, forever. And yet we keep looking for life in pictures, in fashions, in spectacles of all kinds, anything that we can collect or watch-instead of doing. We exist as Dead Souls and we have no way out.
insignifgant9 I live the song..I breathe it..I bathe in it...I am surrounded by it.,,for me its not surrealistic but its totally realistic. Depressing but life is often depressing. Out of depression some of the most beautiful things come. I lost someone who was very special too me who thought of this as his favorite song and I cry every time I hear it...It makes me sad but I am mesmerized by its beauty.
mysticalwind72, I agree. While beautiful, it is nonetheless depressing, to me anyway, and that is the reality of many. While many people can sympathize and LISTEN, I am guessing that few can actually FEEL this song like I do. Everything is blue in this world, a deeper shade of mushroom blue...
There was supposed to be another track on TDS entitled "Just Do It" meant to be just before or after this song on the greatest album of all time. The lyrics were "Just do it nobody cares at all". People thought it was too up front about the act of suicide so Trent was advised to take it off the album. Don't believe me, then check the ninwiki.
Yea it really took a man at his lowest to make an album so full of pure emotion. I can't think of any other album with so much meaning to it and so much genius in it.
Music comes from the extremes of emotion, when you get right down to it. all you have to do is hear Hurt and you know where the brilliance of The Downward Spiral came from. It's incredible and raw and vitriolic and nothing can even come close to it.
Best album of all time. It takes me on a journey whenever I listen because I understansd its story I would have liked the Fragile more but I don't understand the story. In this album this is the part where the man commits suicide. In the fragile, i know its about a man who is trying to fix his life but he fails. But i understand this album in detail i don't understand the fragile in detail like this. If i did though i would luv it more than i already do
this song is probably the best one to listen to when you're at the lowest of the low, sure it doesn't have a positive message, but it empathises with how you are, another song that evokes this kinda feeling is "discover me like emptiness" by In Flames too
This song is fuckin great. Trent is a god of music, but too underrated. NIN must be the most famous band in the world, but there are too mush shitty pop.a pity that the first part of the song isnt live, it is from sampler or sg, but you can't see this because there is the curtain.
Hell yes! All my sister listens to is shitty pop (add an extra o and it becomes poop!), except for the cool stuff that I've introduced her to, like NIN and QOTSA.
I went to this concert 3 times, several songs in the middle had video playing over them. a warm place, eraser, hurt and lastly this one when the screen came up. very surreal. (self destruct tour '94-'95)
Sorry, it was 14 years ago. Probably its place on the album contributed to my flawed memory of it being played then. That and some wishful thinking. (Hallucinogens as well.) very cool part of the show though.
No way! The Fragile was awesome. Two discs of pure awesome. With Teeth was not that great. Some good songs, but one of the only NIN albums that has songs that seem like filler. Year Zero was much less poppy, more like what the fans wanted than what the record companies wanted. freakin' awesome, and my fav NIN album.
Thank you SO MUCH for posting this. I've been trying to find high quality live footage of this song for YEARS now! I was starting to think it didnt exist!

Such unbelievable despair and sadness he captured in these songs so many years ago. He was a very tortured artist but I love the man.
