Very informative and through. =) BTW, have you encountered "swing", where people dont bend their hips, and try do it just squatting. Because I see that style a lot in gym I go.
I performed my first kettlebell swing sets ever yesterday after having trained specifically with dumb/barbells only and I definitely believe watching this video enabled me to "enjoy" my workout without injury or undue soreness. Thank you for posting.
Hi, I have chronic pain in the back of my neck and on my traps from whiplash. I wanted to know if there is a safe way for me to do kettleball workouts? I am hoping to build up my strength in those areas so that I can endure things longer and work my way past this injury. Please let me know. Thank you
my instructor taught me to do the swing with a perfectly straight back and when swinging back to put the weight on the heels and lift the tip of the feet, is this ok?
@mstehle1 Hi mstehle. Thanks for the reply. When I wrote that, I hadn't finished watching your video. I realized my mistake after watching that part about keeping head down. Funny though, I don't see other kettebell swing videos telling you to do that. Even the ones by RKC instructors. I understand a lot of bad videos on this topic... but I don't think this is emphaized enough. However, I also read that some strain in this area is normal when beginning. It's side of necks onto shoulder area.
Hey just wanted to say thanks for the pointers. I decided I needed to get back into fitness, and this video has been helpful in teaching me how to do the swing without breaking myself in half! Try and get some more kettleball vids up in the future! Cheers.
@richp860 Thanks! Not many people understand the concept of the neutral spine and use of the posterior chain. There are too many misinformed people using kettlebells out there. Most of it's due to celeb trainers with no experience but a large following posting kettlebell vid with bad technique.
this guy has no idea what he's talking about. A full knee bend is EXTREMELY important while doing kettlebell swings as it initiates all muscles involved in doing a full squat. You are cheating yourself if you swing like this guy. Look up Steve Cotter or Steve Maxwell - these guys are the real deal.
@Yoness28 Actually, it was Steve Cotter that taught me how to swing like this. He is a good friend of mine and has been to my gym many times for various certifications and seminars. Watch him swing. He uses less "knee bend" then I do.
Thanks for sharing and your very good teaching to get the proper form of the swing! The squat mistake by doing the swing is maybe the often seen error in my opinion,
Ryan Shanahan constantly says you should "sit down" when doing the swings, which appears to require fairly deep knee bending - can you comment on this to help clarify the correct form?
You sit down when you squat, not swing. The swing is designed to work the posterior chain (back of the body including the paraspinal, glute and hamstring muscles),therefore you use a deep hike-back with slight knee bend. You will several variations of the swing including hard style or competition style. Each one has a different goal.
0:39 Address the kettlebell...."Hello, kettlebell."

Mistake # 4: forgetting to have children before committing mistake #3

Mistake # 1: doing kettlebell swings while facing a glass door or TV
Mistake # 2: letting the kettlebell go (compounds exponentially with mistake #1)

Thanks for sharing the finer points of the swing. I appreciated the comment about not looking upward or forward during the swing.

What mistake usually causes neck strain? That's the problem I'm having right now.
ShelterDogs 10 months ago
@ShelterDogs to avoid straining your neck, it's best to keep a neutral spine. Avoid looking up on the back swing,
