When you shoot full ETTL mode, does PW calculates the flash distance from the subject? How does it work? Or is the distance the goes to the receiver the one calculated on the camera based on lens to subject? In this case how would you know the perfect distance between remote flash/subject?
I just got my FLexTT5 and want to run my first flash off of my camera via a cord (STC). I do this now to set up my first SB900 as a master. I have been slaving my other flashes via CLS mode. I thought I could put a FlexTT5 on my first flash, have it fire iTTL, and the PW fire a second SB900 attached to a second FlexTT5. It doesn't seem to work. Seems that any flash in the shoe of the FlexTT5 is looking for the PW to feed it information via a radio feed. Or have I missed a setting somewhere?
Wonderful tool.....but notice that because of the artificial lighting that several of the shots look as if she was droppped into a background with Photoshop.......just sayin' ......
Mark, what metering mode was your camera set at when shooting Christina? I tried a similar backlit shot and the background was totally overexposed. I photographed my model useing matrix metering, AV mode and Ettl on my 580EX Mk2.
Mark a big thanks for all you have done on youtube. Your work with snapfactory has been a priceless set of lessons for me and all i have advised to watch. Thanks Buddy
Great shots outdoors. I ordered the PW Plus II and can't wait to try this. My question... I have 2 x SB900's ...I've only ordered a pair of tranceivers, so, one on camera one on flash. The other flash will go on slave outdoors? I guess I'll need to be careful with lights and angles to get this working but would appreciate any further info for my setup specifically so I can back light and fill light just like you've done!! GREAT SHOTS (and vids)
We have always been fans of Pocket Wizard. Not any more!
Testing a Mini TT1 and Flex5 and running tests using 580 EXII flash units we found the usable rang to be less than 20ft! Even then, we were experiencing power dumps and pre flash only on about half of the shots we took.
All this is a far cry from PWs claim of a 1600 ft range with full ETTL
The bottom line is this is a product that has been rushed to market, big on hype and poor on performance
Mark: Will you try and take them on a racetrack, a difficult place (highspeed exp. anyway)? And also, if you do, please tell me how you prefer to set the camera up? I have just received my TT1 and two TT5's. I look MUCH forward to try them out next week...
I have friends running go-karts and dragsters. The distance is probably about from 5 to 20 meters. But in principle a subject moving quickly past you...

if you ask, this is "the lazy/snob man's way" of triggering flashes. ETTL is expensive and limited. why do you think a 580EX2 is almost 400$? i think off-camera ETTL is just a stupid, expensive thing, but hey, he's getting paid for this video, so why should he care :)
Really? I think it's snobby to say "it's lazy to use TTL". But if you want to play with your manual focus, manual exposure, film camera and calculate the inverse square law in your head you go right ahead and have fun with that, just shut your pie hole and let me shoot my way. What's that, you use autofocus? Seem's pretty lazy, no?
You might be surprised to know that this guy started producing all these videos for FREE on his own time. Sure, he's gotten sponsors now, but you should be grateful that there are those out there willing to share what they know with those less knowledgeable.
There are RF shields you can now buy that go over the flash units that cause large amounts of interference (namely the Canon 580EX II) that will reduce the effects and increase the useable range.
This shouldn't be an issue with most of the Nikon flash units.

The pocketWizards are the truth. If you have 2 580Ex ii I would trigger with nothing less. Just remember to use your updates when you first get them!

I am a big fan. I learned a lot watching your videos. Did you use a light meter with that set up?

@rrcmd2005 Nope, shot in full ETTL mode.

Hi Mark.
How do you adjust the power on each individual flash?
How does the flash "know" at what distance it is placed from the model to get the exposure right?
Does that go automatic with TTL, or do you have to trial and error to get it right? Thank you!!

what kind of racetrack? Horses, cars, dogs? What are you trying to capture. From what distance? :)

Very nice video with clear and concise explanations.
Have you experienced any range issues with the reported 580EXII interfering with the Pocket Wizards?

thank you for the amazing vid, as usual :)

well, he used a 70-200mm f2.8 lens, so i would guess he used F2.8, and probably 200mm for the last image to really blow away the background :)

I was going to buy two new ones but was told at the store that they were having to many issues with them. They are not working the way they should.

Wait a while. PW is sorting out issues with Canon's Flashes.
It's not a PW issue. It's more of an issue with the RF interference from the Canon 580EX II.
Wait after the issue's been resolved.
