So, I'm studying Mandarin, one thing I don't get about this is that, if the four tones r so important to annunciation of words, why is it that these voices are so far from the 4 tones that I can't recognize them? Does understanding come with exposure to this art form? Just curious. Thanks. -beginner

YES I DO ACTUALLY!!! I think it sounds lovely. It's what I'm accustomed too. Also, I realize the HARD training they have to endure, not only singing in a high pitch voice and keeping on tune, but the martial arts they put into it. After all it is OPERA, so let me ask you this, does american opera sound any better to you??

this singer can't be Zhang HuoDing as the other singer of the same name looks totally different and sounds also completely totally different..

I think there is a mix of names here..

ps. this singer pretty in make up does look like a man whereas the other one.. (on A dream in the Girl's Room) also v. pretty def. looks and moves like a girl..

Actually, it's a man. All Peking opera roles are played by men. Yue opera, another category of Chinese opera, only have female actors.
