Unexpected, come on Anthony... I don't even know why did they went through the whole ceremony, the SOTL cast should have gone to pick up their Oscar and leave. Best movie EVER.
I loved his performance and it deserved an oscar but his screen time was rather small (compare to the average lead role actor)...shouldn't it have been a best supporting actor instead?
Just think...his on screen talking time in this movie was a total of 16 minutes. That's it. Yet his presence dominated it. He managed to make that villain both awful and yet dangerously sexy. In fact, I read an interview of him where he stated that 'the ladies seem to love the chills'. One of the greatest actors EVER to grace the arts.
Was there any doubt that Hopkins would win? Unfortunately, De Niro gave an amazing performance in the same year, because his performance as Max Cady was AMAZING
Annie Wilkes (crazy) has presented doctor Hannibal Lecter (crazier than her) at Academy Awards... IT'S ALL A QUESTION OF CRAZYNESS, DON'T YOU THINK SO? :) anthony you're the best!!!
I can just imagine what Anthony said to his dad that night in his dreams. "Dad, I hope I made you proud playing the most ruthless cannibal on the face of the Earth."
There is an interview with Hopkins on u tube where he explains his development of the character ''Lecter'' its amazing even down to the haircut which Hopkins says he wanted it slicked very tight back across his head like a rat because a rat is a killing machine and so is Lecter check it out fans.
The comment that no actor ever won an Oscar for playing a villain is a spectacularly obtuse remark. COUNTLESS actors won for playing a villain: Brando in The Godfather, McLaughlin in The Informer, DeNiro in Godfather II, ad infinitum!
Anthony Hopkins only had 16 minutes of screen time and the movie wasn't really about him BUT he made the most of the role, gave an amazing performance and deserved the oscar.
@rascally5 I don't know the name of the piece, but I can tell you that it is simply an orchestral interpretation of the music played during the opening credits of The Silence of the Lambs.
@Sparrow10567 that night he did and deservedly so! Bless! Him and JOdie Foster made that film they were amazing! I personally do not think the other 2 he did were anywhere near as good. but this wasamazing
i met anthony hopkins in Rome he was a gentleman and a class act and a friendly person i will never forget the few moments i spent talking to him. it was truly an honor and he is one of my idols i work in the horror industry as an actor every october and he is by far one my idols and i look upto him so much. I thank you so much Mr. hopkins for taking the time to talk to me that august day in 2000 i will always cherish it
Robert Deniro probably would have won it any other year for his outstanding performance in Cape Fear, but anthony hopkins delivered one of the best acting performances of all time. Deniro had no chance
Hes actually so great actor, that this oscar speech sounds like some kind of monologue from some movie, and is pleasant to listening. British accent is always nicehearing BTW.
@shadowstalker1120 What about Kathy Bates, seen here giving the Oscar, she took an Oscar herself for playing the dastardly role of Annie Wilkes in 'Misery'!
@shadowstalker1120 Well that's not technically true. Louise Fletcher won for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest in 1975 playing Nurse Ratched who was the evil and controlling antagonist. But I hear you when you say that it couldn't have gone to better actor playing a villain. He was so charismatic and frightening as Hannibal Lector that the Academy just knew right away it was his.
@TheTributeMedia They should've given Gary Oldman an oscar, too. He's played so many villains SO well, I think he deserved an oscar, too. But the Academy is often about publicity and stuff. :(
I got one more... Kathy Bates herself... Best Actress as Annie Wilkes in MISERY... god i love that movie... She's at my top five best villains on films... (of course no one is greater than Hannibal Lecter.)
@shadowstalker1120 Actually Kathy Bates for Misery, Michael Douglass for Wall Street and Louise Fletcher for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest are examples of villainous roles that won before Hopkins.
I love this guys speaking voice!! Such a gentleman!! Love him!! Short sweet speech that wasn't rambling on with a load of bullsh*t!! Lets face it some of them go overboard and I think they even thank their mailman!! Just a crock of shyte if you ask me!! Anthony Hopkins is a legend!!
