  • you can run Windows 2.03

  • jakie dziwne odgłosy wydaje ten komp

  • Can u please tell me where I can get Tran? And also, why have u stopped making videos?

  • Is the Hard Drive a 10Mb Seagate ST412 ?

  • faster than vista.... :3

  • Sniff sniff I miss mine now........

  • Wow it´s good!, I ever worked in PC-XT

Sorry for my bad English, I´m Brazilian I love PC-XT and old stunts

  • Is that Y2K compliant?

  • @MrJavaman5 I'm not even sure lol. It doesn't remember the date when I shut it off so I just never bother setting it.

  • @smartalex61 It's loud!!

  • Damn that thing loud

  • can that thing play the game doom? doom is an old game that could play on that machine

  • @Wesley683 Unfortunately no, Doom is one step ahead of this generation of computers

  • @smartalex61 crap.thats sad.

  • @Wesley683, No, because Doom is assembled in 1993 year and can be launched only on 386 processor PC with 4 Megabytes Of RAM

  • Could you kindly make a modified version of 3D model just for the keyboard. I want the NumPad section is separated just like in AT keyboard. thanks

  • I wish i had this computer

  • I have this very computer I'm just wondering what might it be worth?

  • @jeffey0217 For the whole set I'd probably say between $500 and $750 dollars at the most. If you're interested in selling the items, I think you'd be better off selling them all separately (ie monitory, ram, printer, graphics card, etc.)

  • @smartalex61 Thanks for that info I've been searching for a while any good websites I can check to see what the parts are worth since you recommend striping it out and selling it I'd appreciate it if not no worries

  • @jeffey0217 Usually what I do is I just look on eBay to see what other people are selling it for and undercut them buy a few dollars; that way you know that yours will be sold in no time!

  • @smartalex61 Where did you get IBM Graphing Assistant? I've been looking for that everywhere online but can't find it. Not even (broken) Vetusware has it? :(

  • @cr1901 Actually, I did get if from Vetusware. Is it not there anymore? Or maybe I got if from "The Underdogs." It's been so long though I'm not 100% sure

  • @smartalex61 Vetusware has been down, and the mirror (site abandonware.4shared.com, password 'abandonware'. The password is written on the Vetusware forums for the viewing public, so I'm guessing its alright to post this.) which is attempting to reupload all the downloaded software does not have it. "Home of The Underdogs" does not have it, as far as I checked. Would you be willing to upload your copy to the Vetusware mirror? I'd be eternally grateful.

  • @cr1901 I'm sorry, what piece of software were we talking about? I've been away from home for awhile; and actually only have my laptop with me and won't be home until August. If you want i can Email it to you; just message me your E-Mail address. (Wouldn't recommend posting it here)

  • @smartalex61 I was referring to 'IBM Graphing Assistant.' I sent my email to you in a message, and would greatly appreciate it if you could send me a copy of that software when you get the chance (if you won't be home until August, I'm certainly patient enough to wait). Thank you so much!

  • @smartalex61 Actually I friended you first so that I can send you a personal message since you have 'friend lock' enabled.

  • @smartalex61 Vetusware has been down since March*.

  • I played Crysis II on my IBM PC. Flight simulator too! My old IBM will blow your Alienware to hell....

My IBM and I will TAKEOVER THE WORLD!!!!!

    pfffffft cough cough pffffffffffffffffft

  • Sounds like a commercial airliner on it's take-off roll.

  • 2:40 - TREEEEEEECH (printer's sound)

2:41 - (???????????) the printer has forgot the print?

I luv the old-school PCs and printers. S2

  • @smartalex61 I also have XP! ;)

  • @VZIPTEAM No, I still use Windows XP on my main computer.

  • @smartalex61 why don't you switch to 7? Windows XP is history as my dad says.

  • @ZVONIMIR111 I don't think my 2003 HP can handle it well. Technically it meets the system requirements, but it'll just run to slow I think. Plus 7 is expensive. And your Dad is right about XP, it's been out since 2001 I'm sure is the oldest Windows version with the largest user base ever after being out for 10 years. I feel like people abandoned Windows 95 as soon as 98 came out, and 98 with ME, etc.

  • @smartalex61 yeah, it's expensive. i have got one if you need: windows 7 ultimate, hp branded, no product key, also activated. check about turning off services on windows 7 if you need some speed.

  • @ZVONIMIR111

    windows 7 sucks

windows 7 slower than XP and your old programs not work more

windows XP start faster to than 7

  • @MichaelYoshiFan it is slower than xp if you run it on a 800 mhz computer.

  • @ZVONIMIR111 Windows XP is far more stable. Microsoft products have been getting very glitchy as of late and I believe it is because of Gate's retirement. I would use XP over Vista AND 7 anyday.

  • It's hard to tell the voice synth sound from the HD noise, hahahahah!!!!

  • @BilisNegra If that's really an 1983 computer then I didn't have HD, it was way too expensive and wouldn't be much bigger than a regular floppy. My first HD, back in 1988 had only 10Mb and cost me more than the whole computer, not to mention the huge controller board that you also had to purchase.

  • ahh.. the good old days.. when pressing CTRL ALT DEL actually MEANT something..

  • @kiyotewolf Control+Alternate+Delete = Restart

  • Matricial printer

  • @dadoo1617 Oui

  • tu cache ton code, t'a peur qu'on te pirate l'ordinateur ? mdr lol

  • @dadoo1617 Haha, personne ne peut pirater l'ordinateur, heureusement, car il n'est pas connecté à Internet. Je parie qu'il ne serait pas difficile à faire si.

  • can you get an parallel external HDD for it, like hakemon did and/or install Windows 2.03 or 3.0?

  • I just *loved* the clicking keyboard and the soft bleeping of the mfm harddisk.

  • @BartManNL Yes, those clicky keyboards will never die in the hearts of computer enthusiasts...

  • My god, we've come a long way.

  • Where do put all of these computers when you're done filming it?

  • @TheToploaderwasher Great question! The computers that don't work very well I just keep in a closet and almost never, and this one along with my Compaq Presario I always keep set up in my room.

  • IBM PC's were VERY fast. I have an IBM PC XT 286, Yes XT 286 not AT, it is extremely rare and still works perfectly, I used it all the way upto 1998 to play EGA DOS games. The EGA card could be tweaked into doing 800 x 600, again totally unbeleivable as EGA is 640 x 350 but yes it did do it. It was faster than a lot of 286 AT's at the time and had no problem playing games designed for 386 machines. It was even fast enough to play 4 channel amiga MOD files through it's beeper.

  • @leerees Wow, I would love to be able to get a 286 upgrade ISA card for this computer, but they are super rare and expensive

  • Wooow, Alley Cat! Outrun! Awesome...

I grew up trying to learn how to operate those machines... When I say how was computers for these 19yo guys, they don't believe me!

First time I saw a Mouse, I said "That's fine, but useless!". LOL

  • @hedsonr Ha, I grew up with a mouse. But I remember being little and going to my uncle's house, and asking him how he uses his computer without a mouse!

  • I love old computers. They have a undeniable magic.

  • I had a friend with an IBM XT way back but he didn't have the HDD or EGA. I suggest you look up Grand Prix Circuit, Top Gun, Marble Madness and Space/King's Quest. :)

  • @swaaye Wow, that Marble Madness game looks really neat.

  • esa madre habla!!!

  • @niocuin En Englis: "My mother has this!!!"

  • out run???? omg

  • I have never used a version of dos that old, did that speech software you ran come with dos? If not what is it and where can I get it??? Great Video I'd love to see more

  • @remagoediv No, it did not come with Dos. I posted how to get that program in the upload description. Just so you know, it probably won't work well on modern computers (because it'll run way to fast). It'd work better in a Dos emulator like DosBox.

  • Don't ever lose that KB. From a 286 to the latest core processors, if you have the mini-din the key boards are compatible, but the XT will only work with XT keyboards and there are a different number of keys. You should really try to get a 286, there are a lot more games that work with the 286 that won't work with an XT. Is this a cga system or an ega system?

  • @christo930 Now that I have watched the whole thing, it's obviously ega. You should try to get a copy of geos. Geos is very similar to windows 3.x and will work on an XT provided you have enough ram, which I think is 640k if me memory serves me correctly. AOL used to use it for their access software which is why you could have a full gui with an XT for AOL.

  • @christo930 Yeah, I've thought about installing Geos but I feel like it just wouldn't be the same after that... And also I don't have much room left on this Hard Drive, even in those days you had to sacrifice files in order to make use of your 10mb hard drive.

  • @christo930 I've thought about getting a 286 card to install in here, but the only thing is they are VERY rare, and when one does pop up on eBay they are very expensive. (I wouldn't want to pay more than $25 on something like that, and I've seen them priced well over $100.)

  • @smartalex61 You could just replace the whole motherboard.

  • Comment removed

  • i remember that printer

  • why was the printer screaming at you?

  • @the731272 Dot Matrix printers are really loud, thank goodness we have inkjets and laser printers nowadays! Although I admire the simplicity and reliability of Dot Matrix printers...

  • I love Alley Cat!!! When I was 7 yo, I used to duel the dog: I rushed to him, and then I jumped over it, and repeated the process again and again, until the dog catched me! It was so funny.

  • lol try working at an office with this

  • What was the use of people having computers back then?? I was born in 85 so I really don't remember much about the 80's. I didn't really look like you could do much with these computers.. Interesting nonetheless though..

  • Out of curiosity, what printer is that?

  • @Dms12444 It's an IBM 5152 Graphics printer. (9-pin dot matrix).

  • @smartalex61 Thank you, I was wondering since I have a Panasonic that looks just like it; possibly re-badged but probably another clone.

  • @Dms12444 Could be, that wasn't too uncommon back then. I even have a video comparing an Apple and Cannon printer that are the same thing, check it out if you want.

  • this computer has an awsome keyboard

  • Where can you get this Speech program from this computer?

  • @winerrs I just posted it in the video description (since you can't post internet links in comments). Just to warn you, this program will run way to fast on modern computers and you probably won't be able to understand what it's saying. I would recommend using it either on an old computer or in DosBox (a dos emulator that can be downloaded online). The "say" program always runs too fast for me, but the "Speech" program should work fine.

  • WoW

  • So, apparently you're using an EGA card with a CGA monitor to be able to display 16 colours simultaneously. Which setting would you have to use in a program that supports that? Tandy Graphics, or simply EGA?

  • Select EGA. All of the EGA modes work with this CGA monitor except 640×350. I would have liked to get IBM's EGA monitor, but there expensive and hard to come by. Tandy, even though uses mostly the same modes, uses different hardware and is not compatible with EGA (even if both are the same mode).

  • @smartalex61

Thanks! I will keep that in mind.

  • @smartalex61 Okay, thanks, but I'd have to know more I think...

    1. What jumper settings should I use on the card - standard EGA, or CGA?

    2. Do I need any specific drivers or are graphics cards "Plug'n'Play"?

  • @VintageJunior 1.) It's different for every card, just get the name of the card from the person you buy it from (like eBay) since it probably won't say on the card. Then just Google the name of the card along with "Jumper Settings" and you should find what you're looking for. Some of the later cards actually could detect the monitor themselves and did not include jumpers.

2.) You shouldn't need any drivers.

  • I remember when I playing Alley Cat 8 years old

  • alley cat :D

  • I had to compile COBOL programs on that exact model. Nice to hear the "jet engine" sound again.

  • Is that one of those clickity-clack keyboards?

  • Yes, it's a click keyboard. I have a PS/2 port one too to use with my more modern computers.

  • When I was younger, I was stuck with these types of machines for a few years while all my friends had 386s and 486s. I got new parts and even extra machines on occasion, but was always stuck with the biggest two drawbacks: the 4.77mhz 8088 CPU, and the CGA graphics. No Wolfenstein for me.

I learned a lot from using those, though, from repair to programming, which influences me even today. So I look back on them fondly. I still have most of them in storage somewhere, too!

  • Neat! It's always fun to take them out and play with them every few years too. That's what I do, unfortunately I don't have enough room to have them all set up at once.

  • OH! i thought the text>speech thing was the dot matrix printer printing like a typewriter or something!

  • Hahah! wow! ill love to try one of those someday see how technology had progressed n stuff, love to poke about inside xD

  • Wow my grandpa has one of these in his shop lol

  • Does he still use it? There is a very similar one in a local shop in my town, but the owner never uses it.

  • no, but I think it still works, aren't these worth alot of money?

  • Not really, I got all of these pieces for around $150 off of eBay. The only ones that are really worth money are the original IBM PC's from 1981 with 160kb floppy disk drives. I've seen those go for thousands of dollars. XT's and later PC's are pretty common.

  • Wow, now there's an old friend I haven't seen in a while. This was the first computer I ever used, I had the exact same setup, printer and all.. Great upload.

  • Thanks! It took my quite awhile to get all of the original components together, especially the CGA monitor.

  • Damn. I saw one of these for sale the other day in a garage sale. I wanted to buy it, but didn't. This makes me feel stupid.

Nice vid. I love nostalgia. I never really used IBM PC's, they're a little beyond my time. But i still love the nostalgia factor.

  • Oh gosh, that's happened to me so many times. I see a computer on the side of the road or at a yardsale, and I say to myself I just don't have room for it! But later I regret not getting it. And also IBM PC's are beyond my time as well, this computer was made 7 years before I was born. The first computer we had was a Compaq Presario CDS 520 all-in-one in 1994. So I learned how to use a computer using Windows 3.1, and a little bit of DOS.

  • First computer i used was a Power Macintosh 7300. I moved up to windows when i was 6 years old. It started as 3.1, but quickly moved up to 95, then 98. XP was a huge change for me.

  • Yeah, I remember I was really reluctant to update my Compaq to Windows 95, but we had to do it in order to use newer programs. The computer I use now is an HP from 2003, and I still have XP. I never wanted to update to Vista, but I have thought about updating to Windows 7 but I just don't want to spend the money right now. Plus I would have to buy more RAM and a better graphics card in order for it to run smoothely. Plus I'm just so used to XP by now, I can practically use it with my eyes closed

  • Even with more ram and a better video card, I wouldn't bother upgrading that PC. Windows 7 will still run best on new hardware, so I'd just wait till you buy a new computer.

  • @smartalex61 upgrading to windows 95 was hard for me to do too, my dad was a computer guy and we were running on 5170's with DOS, also had Windows 3.1 but I didn't like it. I liked that old DOS command line, when my dad purchased new computers with windows 95, I wanted DOS back.

  • @PILMAN Windows 95 is ms dos based F.y.i

  • @PILMAN I remember the "big 95", win 3.1 was a toy for most of us as all the games were dos, everybody had 386's or 486's so upgrading to win 95 would mean all your games ran slower.

So we all stuck to DOS, I had built my own boot menu that automatically configured EMS / XMS memory and the necesarry drivers depending on what game I was going to play. Oh man all those batch files, and the day I caught the flip virus from a magazine, back then viruses low level formated drives! THE HORROR!

  • @leerees Yipes! Luckily this was before my time!

  • the computer administrator of our school has one of theese lolz this guy is awesome :D

  • it can play Call of Duty 5?

    jajajajaja

  • wow im really jealous! :D i wanna have one too!

  • there once was a time when people said "Who needs 1GB of space!"

    Good times :)

  • Yes! Back when there was a 640kb RAM barrier Bill Gates said you'd never need more than that anyway!

  • I remember programs like PCTools and SuperDos.

    Good times.

This was a good computer for programming in assembly.

  • Excellent Video, it remind me the first XT which I purchased for U$400.- Thx !

  • Yay lets play counter strike in this PC 8D

  • No mouse back in that time ?

    btw this is awesome

  • No mouse? There are at least 3 at 3:57 :b

  • i bought one of these from second hand store had to ebay it so farewll my old friend

  • The Outrun title screen looks great!

  • alley cat fucking rulz man ;)

  • I have an IBM Personal Computer XT with the IBM 5153 color monitor. It still works!

  • I'm thinking the Audio CD just came out around that time and a lot of people were still listening to music on vinyl, and you had to use 5-1/4 inch floppies because there wasn't 3-1/2 around, let alone a cd reader.

  • i like old stuff any agrees?

  • that printer is great

  • Nice job keeping the thing alive! I've been trying to get my hands on one, but I haven't found one for cheap. My oldest computer is a Dell 316LT. Its specs are 80386SX-16, 80387-25 math coprocessor, 20 MB hard drive, 4 MB ram. It is having video card problems and I don't think it'll last much longer. And again, didn't think there were any working pc/xt pcs left!

  • Does that have a Seagate disk?

  • I'm pretty sure it's an off brand, I'll have to get back to you on that though.

  • That XT seems to have been posessed by Trogdor :p

  • Haha, yeah. He eventually got a new one, didn't he?

  • WOW! crap specs10mb? lol! Didn't know that specs were that low lol... Still amazed how its still survived, btw that alley cat game looks fun :D

  • lol throw that away.~!~~~!~!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • @RIGAMORTIS:

    Nottachance!

Throwing this away would be like throwing a copy of the first superman comic away!

  • u mean the first superman from action comics that was printed in 1938? lol my buddy owns one of those.

  • Could you do a video of whats inside of the computer like what card is what? Thanks.

  • Sure! I'll try to do it sometime this month.

  • Cool XT. What video card do you got in it?

I got one XT too, but I got a more RAM in mine since I added a 256Kb Memory Expansion. I also got an early soundblaster (CT1600) and a green mono monitor (5151).

I got the IBM MDA adapter to go with the monitor, but I'm curently using an ATI "Small Wonder" Graphics Solution with it because of it's ability to do CGA graphics on mono monitors.

That floopy drive sounded pretty dry. you should consider to lubricate the r/w head assembly rails.

  • It has IBM's EGA graphics card. I tried installing a Paradise EGA Autoswitch originally but it made the floppy drive run continuously for some reason. I've thought about adding an SB card like you did, but I couldn't think of any programs that could run on an XT that would work with it besides 8088 Corruption. (Which one's do you use with it?) Also I never heard of such a graphics card that lets you use a Mono monitor with a CGA card, I'd love to see a video of it!

    PS Floppy does need cleaning.

  • Lucky you, the IBM EGA adapter is not common, it's actually pretty rare (at leas if you got a working 5154 monitor with it).

I also agree that getting SoundBlaster programs that'll work on an XT is a pain. A handfull of games does, but they'll run pretty slow.

The soundblaster I use is the SoundBlaster pro 2, the first soundblaster that could (optionally) use some of the signal lines of the 16-bit part of the 16-bit ISA bus.

My system got no hard drive, so I can't run anything >360Kb.

  • Yeah, I got the card from eBay for about $25 about a year ago. I've never come across a decently priced 5154 though, and I actually feel lucky to have gotten the 5153 which can be pretty highly priced as well. The only thing the 5153 can't do is EGA mode's 640x350 w/ 16 colors, but not many programs use that mode anyway.

Also, if you have a Hard Drive controller in that machine it's actually not that hard to install a hard drive (I had to replace mine once). I can't imagine not having an HD.

  • I've now filmed and uploaded the film of my system. It's in two parts, so you should watch them in the right order.

  • As others said, there isn't really any command in DOS that shuts the computer off. The closest would be "exit", which will shut down the Command-Line Interepter IF more than one is open (like if you are running DOS from Windows).

DOS itself doesn't use temporary files like Windows does, but be aware that some DOS programs does (you should shut those off before shutting off the computer).

  • What happened witht he printer after alley cat? Did you use ctrl-alt-del?

  • Yeah, I used ctr-alt-del after Alley Cat because there's no apparent way to quit out of it, then the printer just noticed that it was out of paper (which causes it to honk to let me know).

  • still my favorite computer

  • DOS doesn't have any way to shut it down because it didn't need it... you could switch the pc off.

anyway... the power source COULDN'T switch the computer off... you had to do it manually by pressing the button (AT standard power source)... begining with pentium, pc's used ATX power source scheme... which are designed that way that motherboard controlls power source (PSU),not otherwise...

  • i heard that these old computers used the word execute on the keyboard instead of enter. is it true?

  • Well, mine says enter, but I wouldn't be surprised to see execute on older computers though.

  • ok. do you know of any computers that are older than this one?

  • The Apple I was the first personal computer that I know of, released in 1977; 4 years before the IBM PC. Of course before that they had those huge machines like the ENIAC which was the first electric computer (1946).

  • ok thanks.

  • Hmm, I believe Windows XP actually has a command used for that called 'shutdown', however older versions of Windows and DOS have no shutdown command.

  • Oh yeah? How so? I would recommend using FreeDOS for modern computers, and you could get an old version of Microsoft Office and use Arachne as an internet browser.

  • Yeah, DOS programs can do a lot of what modern programs do, just not as well and they're not as easy to use. Also it's easy to write your own programs for DOS with Microsoft's Qbasic.

  • What OS were you useing there like windows 1.0 in color or something?

  • MS-DOS 5.0 and Windows 1.03. Windows 1.x actually works in color when you use it with an EGA or VGA graphics card, but most people are used to seeing it used with a CGA graphics card where it's black and white.
