  • Societies have rarely ever been kind to women. We're damned if we do and damned if we don't.

  • I love that he actually put that mouth thing on! This man is amazing and I've officially found my new favorite show!

  • It's annoying how this makes it seem like women had it so bad and worse (rather needlessly inserting the concept of women as property never stating that technially almost everyone was considered propoerty of the Crown-which during much of this time was a woma btw), when the vast majority of all these horrible, lowly, hazardous, ostraciszing, etc, jobs were fulfilled by men. Men also got just as much if not more of such public shamings and punishments.

  • tony is my favourite brit ever

  • MY favorite part was when they dressed him up as a woman.

  • ı love how small tony ıs ın the groupe of guys :p

  • marry another dyer or someone with no nose ahahahahaha

  • @TheA7xskating I'm not talking about religion, I'm talking about female homosexuality.

  • Do you think that old man just woke up one day and decided that he wanted to be a historical woad dyer?

  • I think I would have been a lesbian in those times

  • @Afraid0fGhosts Actually, the concept of female homosexuality didn't exist until a few decades ago.

  • @IwillKillYourCereal Female homosexuality has occurred since the beginning of humanity.

  • @marklosextremus I meant that the general public didn't acknowledge the fact that women could be homosexuals until a few decades ago.

  • @IwillKillYourCereal Hmm... ever heard of Sappho (c. 600 B.C.E.)?

  • @mikki2049 Once again, I'm not saying that Lesbians didn't exist back then in time. In Sappho's poems, she expresses love for both genders. She probably was a Lesbian, but there isn't enough proof to state that she and her female friends did anything physical. In some ancient cultures that had pagan beliefs (like Greece and Rome), homosexuality was more acceptable. When christianity took over, though, people followed the bible, which didn't acknowledge female homosexuality, for...

  • @mikki2049 ....the bible states mainly that females don't have the same "urges" that men have, and wouldn't succumb to relations with another woman.

  • There are some loud woman in my neighborhood that defiantly deserve this kind of punishment

  • The fish-wife saga has to be looked at in context: community justice in Tudor England was brutal and rough across the sexes and age-groups. Human nature being what it is, and given the English trait of ignoring laws that were unjust wherever possible (the view changed around the 1800s) I imagine the status of women was higher in practical terms than law and published convention of the time allows.

  • i'm glad to live in the 21st century

  • "ghugh oogh !" Lol. Poor fisher wife....

  • Their lives must've been crap, some shitty jobs:

    Fisher wife

    Wiping king henry viiis ass

    Spit boy

    Headman

    Blue dye maker

But actually the worst job in the world involves masterbeiting elephents

  • @DarthLego100

    Or being your spelling teacher..?

  • Personally, I think being a wife is the worst job in just about any period since women didn't have very much power other than what the men in their lives gave them.

  • @KateMcT Given the alternative, i.e. being a "spinster", being a wife probably wasn't so bad. The simple truth is that being a woman would've sucked, regardless of your employment, but a show called "the worst genders in history" would be very short. I want to be clear that I don't think men were better, but BEING a man was clearly better.

  • ummm at least it looks pretty...

  • Is that the castle from Blackadder at the end?

  • @Yora21 You have great taste, I LOVE Blackadder. It does look like the castle.

  • Ooooh, Tony, you look so cute as a woman! LOL

  • Here's to the unnamed ancestors who survived all of this mess!

  • Now you know why there's not much women's history-herstory-or the way women were treated, is too horrible to admit to.

  • have these episodes been edited down? seems like it jumps in places...

  • @am1gv adverts cut out

  • human Stiltons! lol. Thanks for posting these - I've loved this series for a long time but can't get it on DVD here...

  • keeping them in their place:)

we need this sort of thing today for women like nancy grace and jane valaze mitchel and very few others.

  • awhhh tony makes such a cute little fish wife!

  • hey! stop pestering Baldrick! i love these series!

  • this series is awesome...really gives an insight to those shitty times....

  • That dye thing was awesome!

  • i totally love this serial... thank you sooo much

  • Omg, sad for the fisher wives.

  • @LaDelphy It's not as bad as what one of the men who shovelled the shit out of the sewers, which for starters is a horrible job anyway and were ostrasized by being banned from living in the city, but then if they spill some or mess up in some small way they can be carted around the city buried in shit up to your neck than taken outside the city and dumped. I'm sure there was even worse than that.

  • haha

  • Oh no.... poor guy... poor fisher wives! =(
