I heard he did leave for school but, Tim Allen was angry because Jonathan was still making movies after he left when he said he wouldn't have time because of study, etc. Also, Allen was upset because he knew a driving force of the show was Jonathan's popularity and they would be losing the big star - apart from Tim Allen himself.
