  • best ever, it sure felt so real, so lovely

  • Incredibly, the teen actress (Keisha Castle-Hughes) had to STOP this scene about halfway thru and wait some TWELVE minutes(they ran out of film and had to reload the cameras) before resuming her often verrrry tearful scene here --- never missing a beat as it turned out. Just sooooo heart-wrenching and powerful....

  • all the while jake was at home politely asking the missus to cook the fella some eggs... nek minute....

  • Brought tears to a brother's eyes. This character went through a ton of rough stuff to get to this point.

  • This is such a wonderful movie! I cry every time I watch this scene.

  • this was her first acting job...so amazing to know she never acted before...she is a gift!

  • Whale rider 2 now same cast right now

  • 11 people can´t ride a whale

  • Proud to be Ngati Kahungunu, our peoples story has never been told so beautifully

  • Brilliant acting. For a kid to get up there at that age and act like that, deserves an oscar. Well done!

  • i always see kids loving ppl who treat them wrong, like her. but maybe because he didnt always do bad things to her? i never see ppl like me, who dont love those who abuse u.

  • The movie was very moving and the little actress who played Paikea should have been given the award. Since the movie made me cry as well as angry, I actully hated the grandfather on badly he chose to treat Paikea. Even in this scene shows how very upset she is since he didn't give a shit to be there for her.

  • sad :(

  • in this part I really wanted to kill Koro Apirina!

  • What a great movie with amazing acting by Keisha Castle Hughes. Thankyou Niki Caro.

  • When I first watched this scene I teared up... I wouldve thought that years later watching this scene wouldnt break me... ... but no, epic fail, i cried, worse than the first time LOL. Well done, this movie deserved an Oscar.

  • who would dislike this?? this is awesome!!

ka mau te wehi i kiriata, ina taumano kiriata te mataki churr!! <3

  • This scene makes me cry ever time I watch this

  • Paki paki

  • i was 9 wen i watched this at the theatre on a skool trip loved the movie but i didnt cry even though some parts were sad!!!! maori are such powerfull actorz!!! woohoo go maori!!!!

  • waah i had to cry D:

  • I love this scene and I love the fact that there is no background music.

  • I have a heart of stone . . . and I lost it when I watched this princess.

  • @Iwakuni8

I too do not show emotion at all. When I was young, when I was 8 years old I got kicked in the stomach by a horse. I didn't shed one tear. But when I saw this it was like someone turned on my faucets. I couldn't stop crying for 20 minutes.

  • I wept like a baby when I saw this in the theatre. I said THEN and THERE: 'That girl needs an Oscar nomination!' Well, well, she didn't get the SAG nod, nor the Golden Glode, nor the Bafta nomination. However, out of the blue comes the Oscar nom!! Damn that Charlize Theron! (Who WAS amazing, by the way!) The director Nikki Caro got inside Keisha's head before this scene. They just kept the camera rolling for the longest time. Nikki whispering to Keisha in between shots...just kept her 'there.'

  • an awesome movie that never be forgotten...LOve it!

  • One of the best actress of all time as a teenager and the media doesnt recognize it.. Polynesians got talent.

  • This scene always makes me cry.

  • I've seen this scene 100 times and still cry every time. Certainly, for me, the best child acting ever displayed in cinema. I can't imagine the place she had to go to in her mind to create such a convincing and touching moment (film actually). Definately should have won the oscar.

  • she is by far the most talented actor i have seen in many many years, her parents wont let her do it full time yet till she has had a full education as they are from true Maori culture. She will return im sure I HOPE. and she will be one to watch, Awesome.

  • Homegirl got robbed.

  • such a better actor than your typical american child actor thats making millions.

  • @WoohooILoveDolphins

    Thats true!

  • @WoohooILoveDolphins Once again, true!

  • "This is his chant. I dedicate it to my grandfather... "

    Kills me everytime X'(

  • this is a great movie. i used to live in hawaii and this movie meant so much to me when it came out because i had moved away and was culture-starved. its not just her acting that makes me cry throughout the movie. its the richness of this culture that makes me think of the islandic cultures... all very rich.

  • This movie ROCKS, where can you watch the full movie?

  • Great Movie, Great Actors and this is such an amazing scene!

  • ha i remember watching this in primary school and everyone turned away pretending to look at nothing cos we didnt wanna cry in front of each other lol good times and amazing acting

  • @700ytten Amazing acting? I would say...SUPERB ACTING!!!

  • I want to cry!!!

  • @nicolaus1972 I DO CRY especially when listening to the western government politically incorrect world view-makes too much basic respecting humane sense!

"We could learn and if the knowledge is given to everyone then we can have lots of leaders and soon everyone will be strong; not just the ones that's been chosen because sometimes even if you are the leader and you need to be

    strong; you can get tired.{!}

  • @CeeGeeZ You made me cry again

  • Bah. Makes the back of my eyes prick and burn. Pitty about the video quality, if you're watching the DVD you get to see her tears falling out of her eyes.

  • Brilliant. 'Nuff said

  • This Performance And Speech Broaden My Appreciation For Family Lines And Relationships. Well Enhanced It, I Already Had Strong Morals It Just Increased It.

  • Lovely. No Hollywood obviousness, no precious child-star rot... But wow, what talent! (and great directing). What happened to her???

  • Makes me cry, every time. I love this movie so much.

  • @batourey Can you believe? the first time I saw this film on video-I played it continuously-without boredom-for THREE DAYS????!! Each viewing was a new and more profound experience-a collective unconscious flash from each of the community members. I love the way people express integral honesty with no shame-blaming stigma: which is one way that Paka's absolute disapproval of Pai's legacy stands out so starkly. Unbelievable film!

  • when i first saw this i cry it a good movie

  • Amazing performance for an actor of any age or level of experience.

  • Bloody paka! lolz this part alwayz kills me.

  • Beautiful. Just mesmerising, such a beautiful speech.

She's a talent, such a shame she was pregnant like 5 years later :\

But this speech is a wonderful snip-it of the best performances in movie history.

  • "We could learn that if the knowledge is given to everyone, then we can have lots of leaders, and soon everyone will be strong, not just the ones that are chosen. Because sometimes, even if you're the leader and you need to be strong... you can get tired..." I can relate to this because this is how I feel sometimes.

  • I have not yet seen this film- why is she crying?

  • @mahogonywhisper because her grandfather didn't show up to see her performance.

  • @dreampower Aww.. :( Poor girl.

  • Did you know Keisha Castle-Hughes was in the movie, "The Nativity Story" as Mary, Jesus' mother? She created a scandal, when, during filming, she became pregnant with her boyfriend's child.

  • a very special movie and moving scene!!!

  • so real, she's great actress

  • this was easily one of the finest performances by any actress, anywhere, ever.

  • this movie is amazing!

  • i liked this clip so much I just bought the whole show on iTunes

  • this movie is the greatest movie ever and i can sya that cause im kiwi

  • An actress who doesn't just screw her face up but actually cries, and it makes you cry because it's real...beautiful movie.

  • That there, ladies and gentlemen, is one of the great moments in all of cinematic history.

    Sublime acting!

If it was a fair world, she would have got the Oscar gong.

  • @LepantoElReal Yeeees!!!

  • @LepantoElReal You forget this is the year Charzlie Theron played Aileen Wournos in Monster which, in my opinion, is the greatest acting performance in cinema. Any other normal year, I believe this little actress should win, but this year a nomination will suffice because the winner that year was justified.

  • Too many tissues to count due to this scene.

  • The single most moving scene I have ever seen.

  • Excellent movie. This scene tops my personal list for great acting, hands down. And the musical score by Lisa Gerrard could not have been better.

  • keora my friends this is like 1 of the best mpvies any1 can eva watch

  • Had to watch this in my mythology class, I was crying so hard.

  • I cried at this scene

  • I love this movie!!!

I had to watch it in english class and we didnt get to this part but I saw this a few times and it was so sad. =(

  • this movie is good. This part was really touching

  • Uma das cenas mais emocionantes do cinema, o filme inteiro é muito bom.A atriz é genial.Fantastica.

  • Good acting! I don't know if I can work up tears like that lol

  • she had her first child at 16 :O

  • good for her

  • this girl has such a natural beauty and is a spectacular actress

  • Damn! I just got tears in my eyes, just from watching that...

  • BRILLIANCE!

  • I remember when I 1st saw this....I was amazed....its like I am just watching this young girl nreak down....the lumps in her throat...the breaks...she is a great actress....I WISH THE WOULD HAVE CASTED HER AS KATARA IN AVATAR!!!!!!!

  • yeah she would be a good katara haha i think shes i little to old now though

  • Yeah she is 19 but have you seen her? she looks like she could play 13...she has that Alison Lohman thingy

  • Thank you, I am a nerd!

  • why would anyone be a nerd for wanting to see this movie? It is so real and everyone in this movie is wonderful, and it's 10 000 times better than any new disney movie or jonas brothers movie.

  • she is the sweetest face...

  • I agree 100% w/ "padhunz", this young lady just DOMINATED this movie w/ her performance. How many 1ST TIME actresses do their first movie & get nominated for a BEST ACTRESS Oscar? The cast was very strong, & the amazing part is, most of the supporting cast were ACTUAL VILLAGERS from that area. The director (Niki Caro) is brilliant (see North Country -fantastic acting & movie), & this scene alone was incredibly heart warming. You feel so bad 4 her because she truly wants her grandfathers love.

  • i cryed when i aw this movie

  • she is a good speeker

  • amazing actress ... amazing movie.. i saw this movie at like 2 oclock in the morning on pbs.. half awake bt it still moved me

  • love it

  • one of the best movies i ever seen, and that part of the speech is so strong :(

  • An example that actors are born not made??

  • i just wanna go to the stage and hug her! poor girl making a hard speech to say :(

  • I've seen this movie so many times and everytime I watch this part I cry, every time. No movie, not even the passion of christ was able to make me cry, but this did it.

  • this is so sad

  • the amazing thing about this speech is that i feel like a part of the actual audience.... i agonize when pai cries and i cheer for her when she finishes. this is a great moment.

  • she has a kid now.

  • cuts me up every time

  • MEEEEAN MAORI MEEEAN ! nqaati porou waaaat !

  • can someone plz give a brief summary of what she was trying to say in her sppech

  • Unbelievable acting.

  • Grandmothers teachings is as old as the first breath in this 3rd dimension from her womb and the mother earths womb. Time is now ending. Her circle is now re-newing. Thank you for posting.

  • feminine teaching

  • watched this for the first time today ....great movie ..loved it ..

  • i love this film

  • who can give me the lyrics of the song paikia sang??

  • aww i feel sorry for her and i watched that like 3-4 days ago and i cant believe it made me cry but yeah .. shes a good actress !!

  • that speach moved me wery much... i love that film<3 i'm not that good in writing english but i hope you understand:P

  • Why do people like George Carlin have to die yet Carlos Mencia lives? OJ kills two people and doesn't serve a day in jail? And why why why does a doofus like Nicholas Cage win an Oscar(Leaving Las Vegas) and brilliant actresses like Keisha Castle Hughes don't? I tell ya, life isn't fair. I didn't write this to be funny, I'm serious.

  • When I was 10 years old I spent a day at the Whangara Marae, where this was filmed, so I've always felt a connection to this movie. It's a place that hasn't changed one bit in the 25 years I've been visiting it. A brilliant and very real setting for a brilliant movie.

  • This scene almost got her an Oscar! She lost to Charlize Theron in "Monster". I've never seen "Monster" but I've heard that's really good as well.

  • Deanriam, you don't know what you're saying. I for one believe she had an equal shot at the Oscar as everybody else.

  • An equal shot than Charlize Theron, the undisputed frontrunner of 2003? LMAO! No, she did not have an equal shot, the nomination was her reward, everybody knew she didn't have a chance.

  • If she didn't have a chance, why was she there? If she didn't have a chance, they would have either picked someone else or shortened the amount of nominees, but they didn't do that; they awarded the nomination to her, signifying that there was an opportunity. That's what a nomination is: an opportunity to win an award, which I feel she could have won.

  • But she didn't, she was an underdog, a surprise nominee, the kind that NEVER wins, period, there was a chance for her to win of course, but it was minimal.

  • You can believe what you want; I'll do the same.

  • That's called an opinion, last I checked; not to mention one that a vast majority (myself included) disagree with. I itererate: believe what you want; and let everyone else do the same.

  • It's not an opinion, just because you LOVED the performance doesn't mean she had as big a chance to win as the other nominees.

Anyone who followed that year knows that Keisha Castle Hughes wasn't even expected to be nominated, let alone win and that she took Scarlett Johansson's spot that year.

  • And just because YOU feel she didn't have a good shot at winning doesn't mean everyone else does. You're making it seem like Keisha Castle-Hughes was acting in a fifth-grade play; she was in a three-star movie. You're completely discounting her talents; just bcause she was a young "up-and-comer" doesn't mean she's out of the picture for a major honor. Okay, she did not win; but the least you could do is give her credit for a performance well worth the three stars for the movie.

  • Way to twist my words, I never said anything about her performance, it's a great performance, I just said she didn't have as much chance as the other nominees.

"Young up-and-comer" like Keisha Castle Hughes NEVER win leading categories.

  • You're not saying anything EXPLICITLY. Implicitly, well that's another story. And if upset winners CAN'T win, as you say, explain how "Crash" wins best film at the 78th Academy Awards, beating clear favorite "Brokeback Mountain." If that was improbable and it happened, how come a skilled actress like Keisha Castle-Hughes suddenly CAN'T win an Oscar? Because of her age? Oscars should be awarded on performance ONLY. Age, ethnicity, and gender are variables that should be disregarded.

  • I see both your points. Castle-Hughes was an outsider to win, but it's happened before. Let's just appreciate this great performance :P

  • what an Amazing film!...incredibly lovely and so inspiring..just discovered this on xmas day!..the acting is simply brilliant!..Keisha is astounding!...she should have won that oscar!!

  • No, she shouldn't have.

  • this was my favorite scene-- this little girl has such a talent- i know she's older know- but she's a natural.. this is one of my favorite movies??

  • What incredible talent!

    BRAVO Keisha!

  • Its probably of one the greatest acting moment ever i have ever seen in my life. The reason why its so great because it so real. I still have a tough time watching that scene without crying. I wish she comes back to cinema soon.

  • dan..it really is an incredible performance..that scene made me cry too..unbearingly beautiful!..can't beleive i've only just found out about this amazingly beautiful film..

  • One of the best actors I've seen. She was even nominated for the Oscar.

  • I love this movie, one of my very favorites, this scene always melts me and has me in tears.

  • she is superb in this film, Keisha will become one of the greatest actresses of my generation! and this scene proves it she is such a natural!!! this is acting non of that hsm or band camp rock crap! sorry if i offend u but u know it's true!

  • She hasn't done many roles since then and she had a child a couple of year back when she was 16, so you might have to wait a while for her to rise up again.

  • a kid?

  • yeah she had a kid like 2years ago or something.

  • yea after posting my comment i later on learned that she just had a child and that she hates all the spotlight that comes with fame. That's why she has shy away from the spotlight after her academy nomination and it got to her. But i still have faith in her because talents like her only come rarely.

  • bt i agree with u SuperDuperMaddy we will have to wait some years for her to rise up again and become one of the greatest.

  • where did you download this?

  • everytime i see this clip, i just want to jump through the screen and choke her grandfather...i know its just a movie but dammit!

  • she is the youngest Leading Best Actress nominee for an oscar to date.

  • beautiful and heartbreaking scene.... love this movie!!!

  • once in a lifetime a genius comes along. this girl is one. i am so jealous of her acting skills. she should give the camp rock and high school musical casts some acting classes, not to be rude.

shamoao7fareo: obviously shes crying because she wasn't supposed to be born and her grandfather wishes she had never been born. i'd cry too, except probably more.

  • she's also crying because the speech is dedicated to him, and he's not there

  • wow maoris qnqqsta i luff it so much

  • ow i love the way she says it at 1:38..

  • i noe i would be mad and sad at the same tyme! shoooooooot dang bastard! jk jk weo thanx

  • kay y is she cryin agen?

  • beacause she dedicated the speech for her grandpa but he never showed up.

  • That reason...and I guess it's also just a mixture of other things as well that made her cry. I guess her grandpa's no show really topped it off. awesome film.

  • this part made tears come to my eyes

  • Paikea's speech or is it Kahu?? Its Kah man.

  • this was a good movie...we watched it in religion class

  • 2:18 breaks my heart......

  • this was a good movie and i wanted to slap the shit out of her grandfather he was a lil bitch in the movie but it was good and i wanted to cry when she did this for his ungreatful old ass.

  • hahahahahahhahah...wow...if i could kuss...dats how it'd be
