The intro and outro to this song sounds very reminiscent of the the end of Strawberry Fields Forever where the music fades back in,the part sandwiched in between the mellotron flute craziness where the guitar stridently picks out a single note over the intense drums.
I though it was chad and jeremy or peter and gordon when I was younger. It sounds more like them than donovan though I like to play Epistle to dippy directly afterwards.
the day these dudes are gone i hope im not far behind them - it just wont be the same without these guys - we have lost so many music masters - i want to go where they going to hear this music forever -
I like how this song begins with its own "ending". How many songs do you know that "comes back around" to actually start the song? Maybe it was meant to be looped & played over & over again. Oh yes, the shop bell is "classic" nothing like that in music these days (except in my own :-)... I am a disciple of these guys!
masterful use off the OFF BEAT ,great rythem, nice accents with the horns and hand clapping, nice how they speed it up and slow it down again. i dont want to analyze it too much i just want to enjoy it.
@53mscpkr57 no, you actually gave the best analysis I've heard, also heavily influenced by the likes of the Beatles, Strawberryfields I'd say mainly, loook at meeeeee. I own the taylors face and hands, you own the taylors face and hands!!
The main guitar riff in this is impeccable. Hooks you in immediately. If anyone can listen to this and say they don't like it they know nothing about great music. But what do I know I'm just fakin it.
This was Big big in NY and NJ in 1967 and was as close as these two came to making a song with "psychedelic" sounds in it, like the beginning and the end.
.....how big? It was played roughly every 90 minutes at its peak.
Glad to find this. My freshman Lang Arts teacher pointed out the reference to reincarnation in this song to me when I was a young girl and I still haven't shaken it
Yeah, those '70s High School English teachers loved these guys. My 10th grade English teacher had our class try to interpret the lyrics of 'Sounds of Silence'. It was difficult, but a lot of fun. I think that it was about 1973 when I had that fun assignment.

Sorry, SooperMablo, Garfunkel wrote none of their songs. Simon wrote them all on his own. (Insert obligatory "DUH" now.)

What a classic. I remeber picking up my good friend b4 school and we always would sing some S&G on the way there.
The bookends 8 track was our favorite.
