To answer everyones question, you can use two different routers when setting up your repeater bridge. You can use a Linksys as the base and a Netgear as the repeater. Doesn't make a difference in the brand name as long as its a router. :)
i have a question, say i did all the video told me to do and i set up the repeater in another location in my house, but can i then connect an Ethernet cable from the repeater then plug it into my other desktop computer and give that computer internet that way, because i have two computers and want to set up my extra computer in another room
i dont get it i live in a apartment my netgear router is about 30-40ft from my room and i keep getting disconnected. why the damn router is in the same house so why the hell does it only work ggood when im in the same room?
stop cursing for no reason. check the antenna on the router is secure. If you know how to get into setup, see if there is a setting for "radio power"...could be set to low (someone would have had to set it to this). Does your laptop connect ok at a distance to other APs? Are you sure the internet connection itself is not dropping? Do you see other WIFI signals that are stronger in the room you are trying to use it in?
Ive got an Apple Airport Express and a NETGEAR WGR614v6, do you think i can set up the Netgear router to extend the Airport's signal, because the Airport is the base station and i want to use the netgear as the repeater.
the modem only takes the ISP signal from the entry pt (cable/telco line) to a device (either a PC or a router). In this case, what he is calling a router is a router and wireless access pt. in one.
if you have "bell internet" (att), you probably have a combination router/wireless access pt. Based on your questions, you will need help....either a local IT (computer) consultant or ATT tech support (probably frustrating). Where, in general, do you live?
We can all access our router config page wirelessly...no need for a ethernet cable on the first router. Excellent information given. Good quality video too!
Thanks for the video but in reality people should stay away from this particular setup. (1) It will just not work. (2) it only supports the WEP security option which is extremly weak and the main problem it reduces the speed- a lot.
ha im trying the exact opposite cuz my belkin isn't working right and i just bought a netgear it is fast but the signal sux outside and in the basement
well, it's your SSID. Click on the wireless network icon on the taskbar, or go to Start, Connect to, and see what networks are available, if there's only one and your router's functioning, then that's the name. (unless whoever set up your router chose not to broadcast the SSID, in which case it won't show up). If multiple networks show up and you don't know which is yours, turn your router off then on and see which one pops up. Some routers have the default SSID listed on a label on the router.
I do layer 2 wireless bridging using an E2000 and a WRT54gl. I am not sure this repeating is layer 2 since one router has to be base.

the specs from netgear say they have to be identical routers, so I don't think it'll work

If so how?

I believe they need to be the same, but not 100% sure... (you could try it and tell us :-)

your post is a "fail". how are you going to magically extend the coverage area of a network w/o more equipment?

easy...with magic...im a caster!

Or, you could reset the router and go through setup again, it will tell you the default SSID and give you the oppty to rename it then
TouchSmart 3 years ago
how do you find out the name of your network
