With that said. this is my favorite movie of all time, and I love this fight scene. My parents use to take me to Blockbuster and let me pick out 1 movie, and every time, I would choose this one, even though I had already seen it 50 times. Good times.
A splendid fight scene. The only problem I have with it is at 1:06, where he doesn't shoot him.
The whole time he's waiting, I'm going: He's still alive. He's still alive. He's still alive. He's still alive. He's still alive. He's still alive. He's still alive. He's still alive!
@artiepoore That's a trope called "Bond Villain Stupidity". Google it. Bond films wrote the book on that type of shit. It's described as "an occurrence when a villain fails to kill the hero when he has him cornered, incapacitated, or otherwise defenseless, thus giving the hero a chance to escape and later come back to defeat the villain".
Although this whole scene is well done, I would say that 0:25-0:29 is my favorite part. I think the sound of those pipes hitting the floor adds to the intensity of the fight. They really want to kill each other!
This is a great fight scene. What I love about it is that it manages to be very intense while still being very realistic. There's no "Matrix"-style flips or slow-mo punches to the face...just an intense, realistic brawl.
I always had a fondness for this scene. I was probably 12 when Goldeneye came out but I remember being aware of how brutal and visceral it was. Still one of the better examples of Bond being a truly world class operator.
I am so glad someone posted this and stated the pure and simple fact that this IS one of the best fights ever put on film. Everyone mentions the train fight in FRWL but thats just because its so old. THIS fight is fucking awesome, and so much better. Gotta love all the brutal headbutts - missing from the UK version of the film until the Ultimate Editions came out!
@rhysie21 All the previous Bonds, Connery, Lazenby, Moore, and Dalton all bled from their fights and they bled from punches in their face. Brosnan's Bond never bled.
this was defiantly the high light of sean bean's career, now he is in movies like (the hitcher remake) O_O, lets just say there is no light at the end sean beans tunnel.
I ALWAYS loved how he threw the chains against the wall, I always felt that added realism to the fight...it wasn't precise or coordinated, it was just a dogfight at that point.
i totally agree, this is one of the best fight scenes ever because the realism, watching asian fight scene is cool and everything but watching two spy people fight with such brutalness and making sure the cameraman knew where to look wheither its at the gun when it was about to go off or when the camera was lookin down when 006 threw the low punch and 007 blocked it, it was just amazing. Yeah, this is one of the best fight scenes ever
Sometimes people ask the question, "What if James Bond had to fight James Bond?" Basically, what if a double-oh, the deadliest secret agent in cinema, had to fight another double-oh? What would it look like?
This scene answers that question pretty well, if you ask me. These guys just look like they're throwing every skill they've ever learned at each other. It's epic and brutal.
The best Bond fist fight since From Russia With Love and proof that Pierce Brosnan was more than capable of looking physically good at fisticuffs (it's all a question of staging the fight sequence adn then editing it suitably.) Martin Campbell is one of the best Bond directors EVER.
Unfortunately we'd never see Brosnan's Bond look this good in a punch up again.
Always liked the scene right before this one where James throws the monkey wrench in the dish mech - just aft he pushes Alec over some sort of railing he gives him a quick shot in the leg - CRUEL but a great way to track him!!
(posted this on a more recent upload then i saw this one)
This has got to be one of the best fight scenes in a Bond movie - frantic, brutal and doesn't look slick or coreographed. The stairwell sword fight in Casino Royale is ok and the one half-way through On Her Majesty's Secret Service comes close but the weird echo sound effects and sped-up film do it no favours.
And Goldeneye rules. The M 'I prefer bourbon' scene is wonderful and only Boris's comedy death lets it down.
Alec trevelyan was a bloody superb baddie. Sean bean played him to perfection. And this has gotta be one of the best fights ever done. The closest bonds been to getting beat
This one, Connery vs. Shaw in From Russia with love, The butler against the evil henchfeller in the Living Daylights, are for me, the best Bond fights.
Craig vs. the African warlord in Casino Royale is good too.
Whereas this is anything but-- while you know that since these are both actors that it has to be choreographed at least somewhat, this doesn't LOOK that way like the Bourne fights did-- these two 00s are tearing into each other with the base savagery of two pissed-off pit bulls-- the attacks they use here are as much bare-knuckle street brawling as martial arts skill-- this fight is about as far as one can get from Matrix-style fights, and Brosnan and Bean both pull it off with style and class.
From The Warriors? Dude...while I agree this is certainly one of the best and most realisticly choreographed fights I've seen, that other was so fake! Interesting movie, but they should have put a little more effort into the fight scenes.
One thing that makes this fight great is that it's mostly the actors and not stuntmen, it's pretty sad when actors use doubles to throw a single punch.
Well, for a while this was my favorite Bond movie because it had a good balance of action and character development (I especially love the line, "No, for me" at the end because it shows that James was defeating Alec as a person, not as an agent). In my opinion, Casino Royale has done better in both action and character development, and is now my favorite Bond movie. Goldeneye is still my immediate second favorite though. I actually think the musical score is better in Goldeneye.
@TheShockMaster I hesitate to say that Casino Royale was better in action, but I feel like the stronger plot elements of Goldeneye far outstrip the character development of Casino Royale. The poker-based plot sequences felt hollow, at least for me - even with only a passing interest in Hold 'Em, I found it frustratingly easy to predict the outcome with each hand, which made it feel like a waste of screentime. I also prefer Brosnan over Craig, for reasons I don't have enough space to elaborate.
I joined the German military for five years. Once I met a captain of the German Special Forces (KSK) and asked him how to finish an enemy in unarmed, close combat. He answered: " Just go "into" the guy!!" I have to remember his words each time I watch that scene!!
The most brutal and realistic fight scene for my oppinion was in "saving private ryan" (Actually I couldn`t stand it and watched it the first and only time when the movie was released in Germany 1997) But this one here is great, cause they fight like highly trained professionals!!
This was a great fight..I love how they were both equal it wasnt just Bond -the good guy- slapping 006 -the bad guy around- Great acting...best bond movie in my oppion!
This was a bad-ass fight scene; I don't know why it isn't mentioned more. I think this paved teh way for movies like The Bourne series and the current Bond in terms of realistic fight scenes.
This is really realistic - two agents, highly trained in close combat, are fighting each other...in other, older J.B. movies James is fighting like a grunt in a bar!! Craig even topped this with his physical performance - but Brosnan is second best for me. They play the role as professional killers - not pussies!!
Unfortunately Goldeneye was the only Bond movie so far, in which they characterized another member of the "00 - division" of MI 6!! Would be interesting to know more about it. Perhaps in a later movie. In the way the Craig stories are told I could imagine this without any problems!!
What I don't get is that the action scenes in goldeneye were wayyyyyyyyyyy better than the later brosnan films. It just got way too cheesy. The fights here were realistic and way better. Even the sound effects were better. I hated all the other bond movies after this one. Thank god casino royale was directed by martin campbell.
i dont know who i think is better cus to be honest 006 did pretty well and he also is the only other character ive seen in the james bond series to ctully put up a good fight.
This fight gets my vote for being the best Bond fight. It was cool to see Bond have to have fight a man who had his same training! Bond had to fight another double O agent.
Besides, I think Sean Bean would have made as good of a Bond as Bronson. I know he was in the running for the part at the time.
I agree. You can follow the fight perfectly, the way it's supposed to be. I hate all that shaky camera and fast editing that ruins a good fight scene.
Yes it's true the bourne films do have fighting like this but what gets my back up is the way people act like they've started it. Goldeneye is a better film than any of the Bourne films.
I agree but the new Bond and Bond film (Casino Royale) sucked really Hard and hopfuly the newist one that's coming out will redeem that shit movie, otherwise I might turn to the bourne movies.
I don't think it was too bad as a prequel to show how bond became bond but it certainly wasn't what we're used to with those long drawn out poker scenes but what ruined it for me was the absence of Q and his gadgets. I don't think he features in the new bond film either so hopefully it's got some redeeming action but still bond will always be better than bourne.
yeah but they're being stupid considering the q character is based on a real person who invented gadgets in the navy whilst flemming was serving with them. gadgets such as maps and blueprints on napkins that only become visible when boiling water is added, lipsticks that shoot bulllets and pens that shoot poison darts so if that was the technology they had in 1945, i really don't see how removing the gadgets makes it MORE realistic.
no, stupid is being able to have a watch shoot out a grappling wire and propels you 20 feet out of a pit. an aston martin that goes invisible? please. I think the gadgets will come back in the 3rd Craig film, and also Q and Moneypenny will introduced as well, so I'm not really sweating there not being gadgets in the recent fimls
the wire actualy came out of a belt and yes the car was rather farfetched for the time (though camera-reflective stealth technology may become a possibilty over the next few decades) but the point I was making was that in the original Flemming books - Q and his gadgets were based on fact so I don't see how it makes it more real taking them away. Especially onsidering how much more advanced technology is today.
Troglodyte? Well it takes one to know one. I watched a documenrty about Ian Flemming the other day and they interviewed the bloke who Q was based ons' son and he said he invented gadgets so fuck off.
With that said. this is my favorite movie of all time, and I love this fight scene. My parents use to take me to Blockbuster and let me pick out 1 movie, and every time, I would choose this one, even though I had already seen it 50 times. Good times.

i dont know who i think is better cus to be honest 006 did pretty well and he also is the only other character ive seen in the james bond series to ctully put up a good fight.
Lordhodge1 3 years ago 2
Do you mean Bond enemy? Jaws and Oddjob were good, and maybe even Xena lol

This fight gets my vote for being the best Bond fight. It was cool to see Bond have to have fight a man who had his same training! Bond had to fight another double O agent.
Besides, I think Sean Bean would have made as good of a Bond as Bronson. I know he was in the running for the part at the time.

Seriously, that re-score guy needs to keep his hand off this scene, IT DOESN'T NEED ANY SCORE!

The talentless tunesmith David Arnold too needs to take note of this.
He doesn't seem to realise that the best way to score a fight scene is to SHUT THE FUCK UP!
John Barry had the good sense to do that during the Bond vs Grant scene.
David Arnold - I'm tired of all your bullshit!

@thepassbastard
To be fair - it's not Arnold's fault.
He's paid to score each scene. It's then up to the sound editor and director to choose whether to use the music during each scene.
I do agree that some later Bond movies are over scored. But that's not the composer's fault.

goldeneye is the best bond by far, pierce brosnan is the best bond by far.

I love fight's like this no music, no bullshit.
just realistic fighting that you could learn a thing or to from.

Awesome camerawork!

I agree. You can follow the fight perfectly, the way it's supposed to be. I hate all that shaky camera and fast editing that ruins a good fight scene.

props to the poster

Bruce Campbell did not directed this, it was Martin Campbell.
Bruce C. is the main guy in the Evil Dead Trilogy.

Very gritty and brutal, extremely well done...no music so you can focus more on the fight. They sure don't make em like this anymore...

What about the "Bourne" movies?
PurpleStorm8 3 years ago
To be honest, I haven't seen any of them.
WhenxChristxReturnsx 3 years ago
Yes it's true the bourne films do have fighting like this but what gets my back up is the way people act like they've started it. Goldeneye is a better film than any of the Bourne films.
AK47MONCO 3 years ago 6
I agree but the new Bond and Bond film (Casino Royale) sucked really Hard and hopfuly the newist one that's coming out will redeem that shit movie, otherwise I might turn to the bourne movies.
PurpleStorm8 3 years ago
I don't think it was too bad as a prequel to show how bond became bond but it certainly wasn't what we're used to with those long drawn out poker scenes but what ruined it for me was the absence of Q and his gadgets. I don't think he features in the new bond film either so hopefully it's got some redeeming action but still bond will always be better than bourne.
AK47MONCO 3 years ago 2
Well there was one very good reason why Q didn't appear in the film...He died in a car crash (so sad).
PurpleStorm8 3 years ago
Yes and was replaced in the world is not enough and die another day by john cleese's Q so they still could have used him.(sad i agree though)
AK47MONCO 3 years ago
they were trying to make james bond more realistic so they cut the gadgets
jworpington 3 years ago
yeah but they're being stupid considering the q character is based on a real person who invented gadgets in the navy whilst flemming was serving with them. gadgets such as maps and blueprints on napkins that only become visible when boiling water is added, lipsticks that shoot bulllets and pens that shoot poison darts so if that was the technology they had in 1945, i really don't see how removing the gadgets makes it MORE realistic.
AK47MONCO 3 years ago
no, stupid is being able to have a watch shoot out a grappling wire and propels you 20 feet out of a pit. an aston martin that goes invisible? please. I think the gadgets will come back in the 3rd Craig film, and also Q and Moneypenny will introduced as well, so I'm not really sweating there not being gadgets in the recent fimls
DrunkenGod771 3 years ago
the wire actualy came out of a belt and yes the car was rather farfetched for the time (though camera-reflective stealth technology may become a possibilty over the next few decades) but the point I was making was that in the original Flemming books - Q and his gadgets were based on fact so I don't see how it makes it more real taking them away. Especially onsidering how much more advanced technology is today.
AK47MONCO 3 years ago
Um, you're wrong. Q was based on a gun expert and designer.
TsunamiBomb 3 years ago
designer? um yes. designer of gadgets for the ministry of defence and navy dipshit
AK47MONCO 3 years ago
Not GADGETS, troglodyte. GUNS. I know it's confusing because they start with the same letter and all but I promise there is a difference.
TsunamiBomb 3 years ago
Troglodyte? Well it takes one to know one. I watched a documenrty about Ian Flemming the other day and they interviewed the bloke who Q was based ons' son and he said he invented gadgets so fuck off.
AK47MONCO 3 years ago
Maybe the first one. The second two sucked balls.

I love throwing this in the face of all the Bourne fanboys.
PubliusAfricanus 3 years ago 4
Exactly!! There would be no Bourne if is wasn't for Bond! This fight scene is still amazing to this day!!
graveheart1138 3 years ago 6
i think Bourne and Bond should fight eachother in Quantum of Solace.
