yeah i saved a ton of money because i had a Porsche dealer mechanic who did work on the side for me, and i'd buy the parts from 928 International, used or refurbished parts with a warranty. but still, for instance i had to get a used radiator once, about $1000. the car was incredibly reliable but when something went wrong, it was big bucks to fix even with way cheaper labor and parts costs than the dealer
And not only is it expensive to maintain, but you also have to take it to the right places. Everybody will say they can work on it, but very, VERY few can. Cool car indeed, but it's not a car you should buy because you afford it. Because the repairs will kill you. 2 years ago my s4 needed a tune up. It was $8500. Nothing was wrong with the car lol.
its a great car, but the maintenance costs are very high when you do need to fix something. you can look up 928 International [in california] they are a huge parts supplier, that can give you an idea of parts costs. its a very reliable car but when something does break, it is quite expensive to fix, just keep that in mind - you could spend several thousand a year to maintain it. good luck :)
A guy in my neighborhood is selling a 1983 model with a minor tear in the drivers seat along the seam, for $4,500. I'm 18 and it'd be my first car, I'm unsure about getting it because it wouldn't be very practical and I live in canada so it wouldn't be a good winter car, but it's just too cool... and for that price too!!! I'm unsure about the parts and maintenance it would need, could any owners give me some advice?
I have the original poster for this speed record on my Porsche victory wall in my gym. This car has beat my top speed by only 1 MPH (and I had a passenger)! My 928S has been 're-chipped' otherwise stock. My top speed: 274kmph (or 170mph). It was quite the RUSH! Fantastic car.
In 1981 - I drove our 928 - 145 MPH and it seemed so fast now that is just a warm up lap for the new cars but I loved that interior and Indianopolis red paint.
Still the greatest GT of all times, way ahead of its time. I have one question though, is the disappearing sideview mirror an Europe only option? It's nowhere to be found when he does the top speed run yet it magically appears when he pulls in to the tent afterward.
Great upload! I've had my 86.5 (upgraded brakes that year... thank God!) up to 165mph with a passenger (witness) - almost stock (it's been re-chipped). I've had this car for 10 years this fall... best $'s I've ever spent!
im looking to buy one of these, looking for a 93 to 1995, i believe that to be the last production year....gts w/5 spd, i expect to pay 15 -20 k....am i right ?
This video is AMAZING. I was just watching a top gear video of them on the salt flats. One of the guys had a corvette z06 and it was really hard for him to get to 170! Thats just amazing!
One of my fav videos. Yes, it is correct that Porsche does 'underpublish' their top/attainable speeds. When you get over 170mph, there are more factors that can inhibit greater speed.
It was built before it's time. Many say it was 'over-engineered'. A great machine. You don't really realize/appreciate it until you've driven one. If you haven't driven one, you should - at least once. Pure joy to drive!
I`d like to take the `67 Shelby GT500 KR out on the Salt Flats. 4500cfm Holley Carburetor 502 Cubic inch Big Block V8 Pushin 693 Bhp to the Rear wheels, and over 500 ft.lbs of torque. Ford doesn`t make em like the used to sad to say!! :(
i have noticed that Porsche underestimates their older cars....my 944 estimates around 130mph but it will do about 153 before tacking out and its almost 24 years old and thats completely stock.
I used to have an '86 944. I like how the owner's manual stated it only had 143hp. Yet, it sure suprised a bunch of cars on the road. Everyone thought it was packing a V8. Porsche was well known in the 80's and even now to under-rate their cars. Why? For insurance and licensing purposes. That way it would be cheaper to licesnse/insure and own. I have an old Road & Track magazine showing the 944 beat out that years Camaro. It also shows the 928 S4 beating out the Countach. No small feat
That's one of the best 928 clips on YouTube, thanks. I drove my 928GT up to 250 km/h (156 mph) on French highways without much effort so it's not exactly a prowess to bring it to 171mph on a desert land. It's a much better place to be in than a 911 of the same area and arguably of today as well
The 928 was made from 1978-1995 and almost became as big an icon as the 911. A girl I know owns one and its V8 is as smooth as it is powerful. The 928 was also the european car of the year in 1978. It was meant to be a replacement for the ancient 911 in the late 70's.How ironic the 911 survived and the 928 perished, but not before it made a great show on stage.

@Pintac87 There were removed to reduce drag...
Did anybody notice the white doorjambs? Apparently they wanted a red car in the commercial.
poopdogsays 9 months ago
@poopdogsays guess a white car would do much of a commercial since it would be kinda hard to spot, dont u think? ;)
Christerhenriksen 6 months ago
@Christerhenriksen Perhaps, but it would seem that Porsche would have thought about that before sending the car over for the commercial.

More like 40k perhaps more. The latter cars are rare and ridiculously expensive especially with a manual.

yeah the 928 rules. All them M models, AMG's, RS's can just go home.. All limited to 155 :( back in the olden days they didn't worry to much :b

The estimated top speed from the factory for my 928 is 146mph.117000 miles and 20+ years later it still will exceed 150mph stock.

Porsche is always pretty modest with their top speed and horsepower numbers in their brochures. I wish they still made the 928. Such a "nifty" car!

i agree. i think the 911 turbo is faster than they claim.

@PeteOlson Very true. Turbo's are bye-bye after the 928 hits it's 3000-4000 rpm power-band. It's a rocket after that.
