Good grief this take me back 35+ years. I worked in a cinema and they'd just introduced pre-recorded 8 track cartridges for the pre-show music. The cartrdges were rubbish (always going faulty) and the content was usually very similar, however one of the earlier cartridges contained this track so I wrote to the supplying company who gave me the details of the song/singer and I bought the album. This was the standout track and wonderful to hear it again.
In the late 70's, when I worked as a radio DJ, this was on our play list. I loved it then, and I love it now... it's poetry (you're right: the lyrics say it all)...thank you.

Thanks for putting this up - i wasn't even sure if anyone else knew who John Dawson Read is. This song taught me to play finger style guitar.

This was one of my favorite songs in 73. JDR is one of the most underrated of singer/songwriters.

I saw him do this on The Old Grey Whistle Test in the mid 70s....first time ive heard it since then...beautiful song...thanks for posting
