  • They don't make them like that anymore....

  • Oh my. Now that's something. Love how you can JUST hear the hum of the traction motors through the rest of that wonderful racket.

  • I miss that sound. the MTU versions just have a muted slight rumble

  • goosebumps to say the least.... brilliant!!!

  • loved the screaming fan!

  • Wish I travelled more on hst's when they were powered by the valenta engine, these mtu's are so dull & quiet in the sound department!

  • amazing, best trains (and engines) built, this really sounds speacial, only good old british rail could ever produce such fine, reliable trains! 10/10

  • I'm a petrolhead, but a Valenta diesel heart!

  • what.....an EPIC sound!!!=D

  • That is quite possibly one of the greatest sounds that British Railways have ever heard. takes me back to standing with my dad at Doncaster, York and Leeds when i was a kid.

  • Simply the best Valenta video I've seen on YouTube so far, got all the sounds that I remember from the 1980s! Always will remember the scream of a HST departing the centre roads at Paddington sometime in the early 1990s - happy days!

  • RIP VALENTA GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN,1976-23rd December 2010 :(

  • Wonderful. I'm glad MML started replacing the Valenta's with VP185s before MTUs were available. MTUs on the MML? Probably will never happen!

  • Oh yes, thats spot on!

  • I only remember these *very* faintly in about 2000+ on the great western line. They made such a noise then, and I didn't like it but now...god I wish i could go back to Valenta days.

  • You know I love this video,Valenta in full cry simply magic....

  • Makes you proud to be British !

  • I can smell it

  • It sounds just awesome . How an engine could sound like that. More than that the Turbocharger scream is epic in addition the howling Marston Cooler Fan doing it's job . Can't belive they are really removing Valenta engines and replace with MTU. And by the way that 'clag' is from turbocharger lag . If the turbo and the engine had no lag(so big) the smoke would be in normal quantity, but the high amount of diesel and no enough air makes one of 7th World Wonder-> The Valenta clag .have a nice day

  • I love that Scream and that huge whistle.. OMD what a beauty the train is.. East Midland Trains bound for London St. Pancras International departing Derby. This service is for London St. Pancras International Calling at East Midland Parkway, Kettering, Bedford and London St. Pancras International where this train terminates

  • awesome video. Straight into notch 5 =) brilliant

  • What a great sound and cool clag! The valenta's will be replaced with MTU's unfortunaly, but in our memories and our harts the valenta keeps on screaming and in our harts it never dies!

    Great vid 5*

  • Awesome that's music to my ears

    5* + fav

  • SCREAM MY BEAUTIES!! Top stuff 5* & a fav.

  • Hellfire. You cant beat a Valenta!!

  • Valenta's 4 Life!!!

  • Awesome!

  • no car will ever beat a HST valenta

  • Beast!! What a tune!! Nice cooler whine...nice day....nice scream....just Nice!!

  • Is that actually a cooler whine?

Its sound more like a transmission whine to me as it matches the the drive torque.

The load is instantly applied resulting in high torque, then as the speed increases the torque reduces as does the whine.

  • Perhaps so, I guess the cooler would lag the rest for a bit, it gets spooled up 'in anticipation' (which I doubt). Transmission whine, I'm happy to go with that, good sound anyway!!

  • That howl is actually from the Marston cooler group that that HST power car had. Now its more common to find much quieter cooler groups.

  • No, still don't go with that.

Why can it only be heard when the load is applied?

  • I would say the whine sounds like a supercharger, but I know nothing and I'm not suggesting that's it.

  • The whine is probably 1-2 turbo's. Also, I think the drone at the start is the Marston cooler.

  • theres one NA-256 turbo bolted on s478 which i believe was in 43104 at this time. You can hear hear the marston, and also a whine from the traction motors

  • I'll go with the traction motor whine; this fits with the transmission torque.

The V12 Valenta's one have one Napier water cooled turbo charger. 2250 bhp at 247 bmep at 1500 rpm if I recall correctly.

  • superb info ;-) its that turbo that gives you that lovly sound im sure the MTU has 4 silenencd turbos hence the lack of sound.

  • The high pitch squeal is the turbo(s), I'd guess at the lower pitch whine as electrical radiator fan(s) (or clutch driven). You can hear some traction motor whine around :58. Weren't the Paxmans twin turbo'd"

  • Paxman Valentas had one giant turbo with the whine being the Marston Cooler fans as said previously

  • 4 noises heard :-

    1) The Valenta engine

    2) The single huge Turbo scream

    3) Traction motor 'hum'

    4) Cooling fan ripping through the air

  • The cooling fans are driven from a hydraulic power take off. Valentas have just one giant Napier turbo.

I think the Paxman VP185 engine (see the Australian XPT) had 2 turbos.

  • Awesome opening up of the power car! I wish I had a digital camera back in the beginning of June 2008 so that I could film the HST power car opening up coming out of Sheffield on the 11:27 Sheffield-London St Pancras! :)

  • Hellfire !

  • Too bad that's a dying sound over there, I'd never thought I miss the sound of those screaming double-ended bastards.

  • Great sound track!

Just as I remember them on the test beds.

Wind the throttle open and first you hear the diesel knock, then the turbo whistle begins getting higher and higher until at 26 000rpm its just a hiss

  • where was you heading to

  • home ;o)

train was london bound out of derby....

  • Excellent sound, thanks for sharing.

  • Churchward Saints, Stanier Duchesses, BR HSTs - best locos Britain's ever produced. I've been missing that sound - knee-trembling

  • lovely sound wish the clocks would go back

  • How hellfire! 5*

  • 43104 with s477 sounding good

  • Thanks for the quick response, gona try and get out in the next 2 weeks and find some. Cant stop watching this video - best sound in the world!!

  • this sound gives me chills - simply stunning. does anyone know where you can still find these in service? I'd love to see them for real once more!

  • Only safe bet is with Grand Central (google them), they run about 6 trains a day London KX to the North East (York/Sunderland etc).

  • although there is one valenta left for emt which is the 064 but your not guarented to see it

  • and a second, 43089, is due to join them soon!!

  • @northcms I've seen National Express running them in around the Bristol area. I also have a sneaking suspicion that First Great Western has a few too..

  • Are these air-cooled?

  • Hi Douro20

Well they are watercooled but the radiator is of course then air cooled by a large fast spinning fan (this forms part of the scream in the video, but most of the scream is from the huge single turbo-charger on the engine). Since this video was shot almost the whole fleet (now 30yrs old+) has been reingineered with new engines/radiators and so on. Now very quiet/clean/efficient and now so very boring!!!!!

  • Ah VP185s arnt THAT boring :P Though their Marstons (the ones that have them) are getting replaced =\.

  • Beastage!

  • Power power power. pick up is impresive.

  • Super vid!... cant beat the Valenta/Marston combination, sounds like a Napier turbo so it's probably a 'project rio' pc.

most MMl val's have had new blowers in recent years that don't 'scream' like the Napiers. 43083 is as loud as hell though:) bring 'em back...

  • What a load of twaddle here. VP185s have a similar turbo thus they scream on full power. Even then some VP185s have Marston Cooler Fans. And just because this had a Valenta and Marstons doesn't mean its probably rio. because chances are this video was taken after the rio power cars went to fGW!

  • 25th Aug 2007, spot the Derby fans walking home on the bridge.

  • ....and oh so boring and character-less too are MTU PC's

  • I see where you're coming-from...but there's a time and place for both; this isn't either for MTUs!

  • My God, that sound is absolutely gorgeous ! Makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end.

  • mate i accidently hit the poor comment button, sorry, good comment. the sound deffens me, lol.

  • Another classic piece of footage. This driver wasn't playing around, straight to full power. Can't beat a valenta. Its a pity they have been replaced with this mtu crap. No more whistles and fans. Valentas, you will be missed.

  • awesom

  • What a fantastic sound! Straight to notch 5,brilliant!

  • What power car was this?

  • wow

  • Long live valentas.

  • these engines arent turbocharged they are supercharged

  • Actually the valenta is a turbocharged engine, hence why there is a slight delay between engine rev pick up and turbo whine. trust me, I used to work on em.

  • yep, one turbo! :D

    A VP185 has four! :P

  • I also worked on them for a while, despite only being 15 at the time! :O

  • How right you are.

  • Marvelous!!!

  • oh, a screaming valenta is just pure music, love it XD

  • what a fantastic vid listen to that turbo screaming its heart out! 43 out of 10 lol

  • Excellent Stuff!!

  • I bet the local chavs would be itching to take one of these out at notch 5!

  • Yep, and no!

Yes - it's power, it's what they lack

    No - it's a diesel - they're petrol-heads who driver 'hairdryers' (Scooters!) or souped-up Novas usually! :P

  • No probs - wish I could share more but thats a problem now theyre going, thats why I has a filming bash in 06/07!

I have some more on tape of FGW/MML/GNER so hold on tight for future updates

  • MY BLOODY LORDZ, MARSTON ROCK! Least some VP185s still have them ;)

  • my lordzzzzzz.

  • Thanks for sharing - that is absolutely quality!

  • Certainly is!

  • Superb video, good sound quality too. I usually get too much wind noise rather than the Valenta thrash.

  • Slight mod to camcorder. Small amount of foam placed over mic. I know exactly what you mean about wind noise, you live and learn!

  • That is absolutely amazing very well done!

  • brilliant vid!

  • beast. bet them 222 r thinking i wish i sounded like tht

  • LO Yeah!

  • Bloody hellfire!

  • depends but they can run with a napier

  • I still can't believe one of the most incredible sounding engines I've ever heard is a bleedin' diesel!! What a noise!

  • Guess you're more of a 'Petrolhead' then?

  • For sound quality, yes.

  • The more I watch this, the more impressive I find it!

  • BLOODY 'ELL!! awsome sound that!!

  • that sound makes me shudder. amazing engines!! is that leaving derby northwards?

  • Think that's going south - heading past Etches Park (south-east of the station), but we've been diverted that way before as a round-a-bout way of gettin back onto the Chesterfield/Sheffield lines, but, looking at the position of the camera, I feel this is a normal southbound service!

  • Spot on, normal south bound/up service to the capital. Best (loudest) seat the house on a weekend first ticket in first class.

  • How much is a 'Weekend First' on EMT? - is it a cheap 2nd-Class upgrade, or a full, expensive, open ticket? (From Leeds to Sheffield, or Derby?, or even St. Panny International! :-) )

  • I have paid £7 many times on top of any 2nd class ticket (inc advance puchase cheapo's). Means you can go from £14 1st ones way! Not sure about EMT pricing now and also im told Valentas are going very soon from EMT. Only Grand Central left with passenger Valentas?

  • EMT wont have the valentas but will have Vp185 engines which also have the napier and marstons which u hear so well in this clip (the scream and the howling ) so they will still be good to ride

  • Dont VP185 have four smaller (quieter) turbo's as opposed one big (loud) turbo of the valenta. VP185 not a patch on valenta but better than MTU!

  • Got it all right - four smaller turbos, and no, they don't match a Valenta for thrash, but can match a Valenta for clag (some are as equally old and ragged as the Valentas!

  • VP 185 has two stage turbo charging - one large low pressure turbo and then four small high pressure ones

  • wat a great vid a noise that will be missed my many a train Enthusiast never to be heard again

  • In the words of Chris Gallagher, "Proper bl*dy engine that!"

CLASSIC! Gonna be a shame when they finally succumb! :-)

  • beauty

  • lovley

  • .......................Outstanding !!

  • wow fukinghell

  • Excellent Vid.. Raw Valenta power at its best!
