You think they should be, so that it's easier to sing with. But Maechellemep is right. They're supposed to be higher or lower - every song differs. It's like saprano & alto; tenor & bass. What would a chorus be, if you sang mono through a whole song? You need the other half :)

exactly; in the original song, michelle Branch and Jessica Harp sing two different parts. when you sing them together, it sounds greaaat. but if only one part is sung (like in this video), it doesnt sound good anymore.
