Where's all the video of this band from the mid-80's? I can't believe no one was filming them. The sound on this is really nice for an audience shot of its time.
@Cygnus111 what do you mean where? I've uploaded loads of videos of Ratt in the 80's. Pasadena 1983, Rock Palace 1984, Osaka 1985, London 1986, New York 1987, Tokyo 1989 and also vids from the early 90's. Its not as much as other bands, Ratt footage is rare, but its there.
Warren has always been my guitar idol. Sure George Lynch, Jake E Lee, Randy Rhoads, Steve Vai, Nuno Bettencourt, etc. were all phenomenal too. But something about Warren's style, especially his phrasing, has always really left me in awe. And I agree with IzzyStorm concerning their live shows. Saw them in '85, '86 and '99--all lackluster performances, primarily due to Stephen. But when the rubber meets the road, there's no denying that Out of the Cellar is a pure classic, and Warren is amazing.
He's a great player, but Ratt never became as huge as their other Sunset Strip counterparts. DeMartini's songs aren't entrenched in the public's mind in the same way that music from guys like EVH and Slash. Ratt's most recognizable work is "Round and Round", which is hardly DeMartini at his most creative. It's not that DeMartini isn't talented as hell; his body of work just never lived up to his promise, at least commercially.

As a late 80's and 90's metal fan and band member, I hated when "leads went out of style" for years, until a freaking video game would "lead" a lot of youngsters to study the great guitarist during the golden age of metal and help usher it back in style. I tired of the forced concert solo's. Only the cream of the crop could pull this off. The worst part of this song is the in and out of key solo. Song solo's good, forced guitar solo except from a handful, not good. 99% drum solo's the same
@ULTRADREW1 true i wish that juan would just put the past behind him tho and rejoin.. infestation was badass but it would of been more top notch if juan wrote some of the stuff with them...you gotta admit carlos is a good mix tho with the new ratt
GambitHaze, you grouped too many subsets into the ground level group. The Scorpions have been around since the late 60's. Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Def Leppard were part of the late 70's early 80's New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Ratt was part of the initial wave of the mid 80's LA metal scene that spawned in Van Halen's wake that also included Dokken, Motley Crue, Quiet Riot. Then followed the next wave of GNR, Wasp and then the corporate mainstream acts like Winger, Poison, Warrant etc.
Interesting comment throwing Cinderella into the conversation. I saw Ratt and Cinderella back to back on a VH1 tour a couple of years ago. I'd totally blown off Cinderella back in the day--probably cause of the name, the hair, and the radio's focus on the ballads--but that night they were clearly the better band. But no one in the whole tour package (including Firehouse and Quiet Riot) belonged on stage with DeMartini. Of all the 80's shit hot axemen, he's in the conversation with the best.
Warren De Martini left the band cause he hated touring. He is doing solo projects now and is one of the best guitarists ever. He and Jake E Lee were roomies at one time and are still best friends to this day. Imagine those 2 in a group together!
Steven Pearcy is doing solo work as well using the Ratt label. They have a new CD Coming out soon where Pearcy and Martini reunite for a possible new tour. We will see.
@109Thunder Warren never left the band, he briefly played for Whitesnake in 1994 if that's what you're talking about, but he didn't leave. Ratt has been reunited and touring since 2007, the new CD came out a few weeks ago, April 20, 2010.
@Rattmaster86 You're an idiot. Be careful "laying down" facts when you weren't there, or don't anything about what was going in the band at the time from reputable sources... that is all...
He didn't try to play just FAST. What he played just sounded good. His playing did contain the speed element, but as just another tool. Many from this era relied on speed because they couldn't really play. This guy had the attitude in his phrasing. GREAT!!! For those that know what they're listening to. I saw several shows back then and I remember thinking it doesn't get any better that this. I didn't know how truly rare these performances were in the world of rock. Man I miss this stuff.
@krelbar Yes! you said it bro! That talent is LEGENDARY! as displced7 so eloquently put it! You will never see talent like this ever again in music sad to say! it's all memories in time now!
hey dude go blackhawks hows rockford? have you seen patty? hows kim? ms kimball will meet you at the scupper judy says hi remember that game when you scored that goal?? lets go to dio
well whoever told you that is very wrong, they have a new album coming out in April with Pearcy on vocals, type in "best of me" in the search bar, its their new single right now.
The only time Pearcy wasn't with the band was from 2001 to 2006. Other then those 5 years he has been the bands singer since the 70's.
I read that Warren replaced Jake E. Lee in Ratt or formerly known as Mickey Ratt before Jake ran off with Ozzy! Warren sought guitar lessons from Jakey too. So, the question is... Who's better? My answer has to be Jake e Lee !
he never toke guitar lessons from jake they where just roomates..while warren was writing out of the cellar jake was writing bark at the moon tin the same room
@motleycrue24 Really? Ok , I read it somewhere, I don't know how credible, but I heard it. Either case, i was a big Warren fan but for some reason I like Jake more.
he didnt take guitar lesson from jake dont know where ur gettin your info from they where roommates when jake was writing the bark at the moon album warren was writing out of the cellar
@motleycrue24 :) I believe I read it in a Jake E. Lee Bio, Wikipedia I think. Whatever, i think it's cool that they were roomates and who would've thought.. not me that's for sure.
@Zubirrex NO, just posing....the needles have obviously already taken their toll by this time. DeMartini technical chops are so superior, plus Warren seem to play the 'shy guy' role (similar to the early EVH), rarely interviewed on video and simply let Pearcy be the band's megaphone. Ratt should have traded up to Sykes...Just imagine that combo on-stage...
they didnt let robbin solo because he just wasnt as good enough as warren was and he was always doping up and drinking....you have just been enlightened...damn im good
I can't find RATT: behind the music anywhere, would love to see it.
I have never understood how Ratt got into so much debt and got so broke. I mean they sold over 20 million worldwide and headlined some super successful tours...I know reach cost them $800k, but surely its platinum status still made it profitable. Detonator was a flop, but still it went gold...
I think Ratt got into a lot of debt because of overindulgence. At one point, they even sponsored their own racing car (something I found out when I was browsing extensively on Juan's message board).
According to Robbin and Stephen, the band were drinking and drugging a hell of a lot during the making of Reach for the Sky. Stephen said that the atmosphere was strange and that everyone was in their own worlds.
Even the usually candid Juan refused to elaborate on the nasty things that took place.
Detonator wasn't really a flop. It made 3 times its cost (the rule for any commercial entity).
It's just that it wasn't the 2nd coming of Slippery when Wet or even Dr. Feelgood.
Other classic 1990 metal albums to sell half a million records are Iron Maiden's No Prayer for the Dying, Anthrax's Persistence of Time, Judas Priest's Painkiller, Pantera's Cowboys from Hell and Slayer's Seasons in the Abyss.
Back to Ratt, I think they became too confident with their initial success and overspent.
Yes I did see behind the scenes. Stephen rejected touring with the crue? what an idiot!
I think another factor is the revenue in general. I was able to dig up an 20 question interview with Stephen
Pearcy who when asked what his biggest paycheck was, said it wasn't his biggest but $40k in 1984 (which he spent on a porshe) and $80k. That's definitely some good coin, but I think it shows the types of royalty checks he/other band members were receiving.
A guy who worked in radio in that era told me about Stephen turning down Crue so Ratt could tour with Stryper and Vixen. The radio guy's comment (as well as tons of interesting info I typed) can be found if you look for the British live video of Give it All.
It's a shame that Ratt never made an album whose success was equal to that of Def Leppard's Hysteria, Whitesnake's '87 LP, Aerosmith's Pump, Skid Row's '89 LP, Guns N' Roses' Appetite for Destruction and Poison's Open Up and Say...Ahh!
In an interview on the official RC site, Juan hinted that the real reason behind Robbin's departure was to do with money because he mentioned that the businessmen affiliated with Ratt would often make the money seem more important than the people who were making it.
I think Ratt's new management decided that the Detonator album was proof that they didn't need Robbin (who also got divorced) since all you need in a rock band is bass, drums, vocals and lead guitar (hence more cash to go round).
I could definitely see that. Ste seemed to really rub a lot of people the wrong way. I wouldn't be surprised if the crue only dug ratt because of Nikki and Robbin's close friendship...I read a interview with Nikki in which asked his liking of Ratt from 1-10 and he said 0
I know Robbin blew his fortune on drugs and excess, not to mention a house he never got back due to his divorce.
It would have been cool if the boys switched it up from Beau Hill after Invasion, hell even after Out of the cellar. I think choosing Mike stone for Reach was a bad call, but lets be real the material to begin with wasn't too stellar....a producer can only do so much. Beau didn't help matters much, sure he got ste's vocals but that's ALL he got.
They got rid of him after Dancing Undercover when Juan found out that Beau was making an album with his girlfriend on their money (which is why he wanted them to leave the studio early).
It didn't help matters much that they were pressed for time already given how their manager had placed a deposit in the recording studio.
While Dancing Undercover may not be their best album, I think it's the best album to be made under rushed circumstances (8/10).
In regards to Reach for the Sky, if the middle-of-the-road tracks (No Surprise and Don't Bite the Hand that Feeds) were replaced with the left over tracks (Borrowed Time and Run Around with Me), the album would have been more consistent.
Also, the ballad 'I Want to Love you Tonight' is a very good song but the ballad Chances was a great one - all it needed was better lyrics and singing.
You can tell they were running out of ideas when they decided to use a Mickey Ratt song (City to City).
I think Ratt should have teamed up with Phil Spector.
His status as a Beatles producer and him having worked with The Ramones would have given them not only more commercial appeal but make their trademark sound truly epic (I mean...he did pioneer the wall of sound after all).
Ed Kramer would have also been ideal as a producer since he worked with Beatles, Led Zep, Hendrix, Rolling Stones, AC/DC, Kiss and Anthrax.
Then there's the Crue/Metallica producer and Bon Jovi engineer/mixer Bob Rock.
I can sympathize with Ratt wanting to work with Mike Stone. His production on Whitesnake's '87 LP was the '80s equivalent to Pantera's Far Beyond Driven (blues but with a very heavy sound). Unfortunately, he was too engulfed in his vices.
Even Beau's biggest critic, Juan, admitted that Reach for the Sky would have been a better album had they hired Beau right from the beginning.
Then again, they could have hired Mike Clink (Guns N' Roses) before Metallica hired him for ...and Justice for All.
Four more producers Ratt could have worked with ---> Max Norman (Ozzy), Glyn Johns (Beatles, Stones, Led Zep, Eagles, Clapton and Who) Bruce Fairbairn (Bon Jovi, AC/DC, Poison, Aerosmith Scorpions and Van Halen) and Michael Wagener (Metallica, Dokken, Megadeth and Skid Row).
Then there's the Crue/Twisted Sister producer Tom Werman.
Robbin complained that Ratt never got to do the heavier kinds of rock he was into. He thought Ratt became too polished. Stephen thought Beau was too clean for Ratt.
I totally forgot about Mike Stone producing 87, for that I apologize. With that point taken into consideration I can empathize with their decision a bit more.
I still think Rock, Werman, Clink, or Wagener would have faired best. For some reason I think wagener would have done it well.
I do hope Ste releases a book on the ratt experiences. I'm strangely compelled by their rise and subsequent fall out of music.
As for dancing, I agree that it isn't awful, but it just lacks a punch. They failed to ever deliver a single to the masses like Round and Round or lay it down. I love Dance and Way Cool, but I could understand why they didn't catch on.
I'm definitely going to check out those songs that didn't make the Reach cut. I must say I absolutely love the album cover
Shame they didn't rest up and make reach and Dance into just 1 album. I think it's evident that they needed a break.
Robbin said that when he reunited with Bobby and Warren, they got along so well to the point that they realized the band should never have fallen out and disintegrated like that.
They all agreed that they should have took a break - one or two years, whatever it took.
Rob went on to say that it was constantly Ratt & Roll to the point that fatigue may have soured relationships.
After DU, they should have waited until '89 to make an album then they would see how bloated the pop metal scene was.
On the German live video of Dance, I mentioned a fair bit as to why DU didn't have punch.
To elaborate - Robbin and Warren found an old beat up, funky Marshall amp with 25-watt Celestions.
To quote more from Robbin:
"It just has that twang to it, that classic Marshall sound. So rather than the high-tech stuff, we both plugged straight into a good little Marshall amp for most of the album. We didnt over-process, over-equalize, or do anything to it."
I agree with you on some of these singles choices....and I love Between The Eyes....however....if they didn't release Lay It Down as a single, I think that would have been a BAD MOVE. That is one of their top 3 best songs in many people's minds.
Between the Eyes has a great hook and they almost dive into Def Leppard territory when shouting "You hardly notice". The end is my favorite part of that song!
The artist responsible for the album cover of Reach for the Sky was Jean-Francois Podevin.
If I was to make a best-of album featuring tracks from DU and RFTS, it would have City to City, 7th Avenue, Chain Reaction, It Doesn't Matter, Looking for Love, Enough is Enough, Bottom Line, What it's Gonna Be, Take a Chance and What I'm After.
Coincidentally, the original title for Dancing Undercover was Fine Mess* and that suits that track listing to a tee.
"We are basically always on tour or recording. This year was the first time we really ever had a break. I had about eight weeks off, and my guitar was not the first thing on my mind. Its good to take a break from it for a while sometimes, because otherwise you stagnate."
In '89 (I think he may've wanted Clink):
"My current favorite band, who suits my tastes to a tee, is Guns and Roses. They are a true rock n roll band, with plenty of heart."
Ouch. That's harsh. Given what was said in The Dirt, I was expecting either Whitesnake, Poison or Warrant to receive such a rating. Even Nitro and the most lamest of glam metal spin-offs deserve a 0 than Ratt.
Robbin was said to have fallen out with Nikki because of not wanting to be his best man at his wedding (in order to stay clean).
I've seen photos of Ste with Vince during their solo career phase where they also took time to become race car drivers. I guess they never fell out.
Have you seen the Behind the Music documentary yet?
I wish there was a DVD release so that we could see the uncut interviews. Juan got lots of screen time but Warren didn't say too much which made him Ratt's equivalent to Mick Mars.
Robbin had said that the only reason why the band didn't break up was due to the pursuit of wanting to make another hit (to pay bills).
It's because of the debt that Stephen left the band.
He even turned down the chance for Ratt to support Crue in late 1990.
I read an interview with Steven Adler from metal sludge and his biggest royalty check was $850k, in nikki sixx's book the heroin diaries he has a part where he mentions he gets one for $650k, and this was during the success of theatre of pain.
I think with ratt's string of only platinum albums. world tours that got smaller and smaller in crowds, and the splitting between the 5 members that they just weren't banking the type of rockstar coin that you would think
I think it speaks volumes about Steven's biggest royalty check because in Slash's autobiography, he said that rather than each guy getting paid 20% per dollar, Axl refused to be on the same level as Steve - in fact, Axl became the highest grossing member of the band.
Stephen was the founder of Ratt and it makes me wonder how things were distributed in that band.
Even Slash had said (again, in his autobio) that he thought Stephen was a complete moron and despised seeing Ratt because of him.
Apparently, when including the SP (singles) sales alongside the LP sales, Ratt's global success comes to roughly 30 million records sold (on par with Judas Priest).
I remember reading an interview where Bobby said he was able to buy several houses for some of his family members so it makes me wonder about the other guys. Robbin obviously blew a lot of his cash on heroin.
I know Bobby and Juan have sons so I can imagine there being a lot of pressure to make cash in the late '80s and early '90s.
Juan and Bob would divorce their wives as soon as it was the mid '90s because after Ste left the band, all Ratt members lost their income for some time and it was only in recent years that they started to get paid in regards to royalties.
Ste really disappointed a lot of people. Juan mentioned that he would keep diary notes of low concert attendances, Ste's bad singing / stage banter and bad reviews. I hope he releases an autobiography. Ste is meant to be releasing his tell-all book RaTTales.
most underrated band of the 80s, i honestly think its unfair to even group something like this with a band like poison. I would love to see Cece deville even TRY to play this lol
Ratt were too underrated but at least they had some form of commercial success.
The most overlooked of bands were ones who never achieved the slightest bit of mainstream recognition (Savatage and Armored Saint).
I think the reason why Ratt tend to get grouped with Poison is because both bands did a melodic form of metal whilst dressing in a way that was more colorful than the standard black and tattooed look.
But even here, they don't look particularly all that abstract. They look very cool.
@310stanger Dude, CeCe is very under rated. Not saying he is as gopod as Warren, but he def handle his own. I would give my eye teeth to have CeCe Deville in my band!
BTW, Most underrated band was Cinderella, IMO.
Sorry for the late comment, but I just saw this for the first time.
They were all worried about him. Told him that he should stop, but he didn't. So they others didn't know how to help him anymore and just decide to let him be. Its a sad story every time I watch Ratt behind the music.
That's true. Ste's financial debt is what caused the band to implode. Also, he can be fairly lousy live plus it didn't help matters he was displaying feelings of spiteful envy towards Bon Jovi and Poison.
One of the worst vocalists of the era...sounds like ass!

@Rattmaster86 he is??? someone told me he wasnt singing with them anymore

well whoever told you that is very wrong, they have a new album coming out in April with Pearcy on vocals, type in "best of me" in the search bar, its their new single right now.

Zubirrex 2 years ago
@Zubirrex NO, just posing....the needles have obviously already taken their toll by this time. DeMartini technical chops are so superior, plus Warren seem to play the 'shy guy' role (similar to the early EVH), rarely interviewed on video and simply let Pearcy be the band's megaphone. Ratt should have traded up to Sykes...Just imagine that combo on-stage...

JosephKuby 2 years ago
Detonator wasn't really a flop. It made 3 times its cost (the rule for any commercial entity).
It's just that it wasn't the 2nd coming of Slippery when Wet or even Dr. Feelgood.
Other classic 1990 metal albums to sell half a million records are Iron Maiden's No Prayer for the Dying, Anthrax's Persistence of Time, Judas Priest's Painkiller, Pantera's Cowboys from Hell and Slayer's Seasons in the Abyss.
Back to Ratt, I think they became too confident with their initial success and overspent.
JosephKuby 2 years ago
Thanks for the info Joseph
Yes I did see behind the scenes. Stephen rejected touring with the crue? what an idiot!
I think another factor is the revenue in general. I was able to dig up an 20 question interview with Stephen
Pearcy who when asked what his biggest paycheck was, said it wasn't his biggest but $40k in 1984 (which he spent on a porshe) and $80k. That's definitely some good coin, but I think it shows the types of royalty checks he/other band members were receiving.
Garb0e 2 years ago
A guy who worked in radio in that era told me about Stephen turning down Crue so Ratt could tour with Stryper and Vixen. The radio guy's comment (as well as tons of interesting info I typed) can be found if you look for the British live video of Give it All.
It's a shame that Ratt never made an album whose success was equal to that of Def Leppard's Hysteria, Whitesnake's '87 LP, Aerosmith's Pump, Skid Row's '89 LP, Guns N' Roses' Appetite for Destruction and Poison's Open Up and Say...Ahh!
JosephKuby 2 years ago
In an interview on the official RC site, Juan hinted that the real reason behind Robbin's departure was to do with money because he mentioned that the businessmen affiliated with Ratt would often make the money seem more important than the people who were making it.
I think Ratt's new management decided that the Detonator album was proof that they didn't need Robbin (who also got divorced) since all you need in a rock band is bass, drums, vocals and lead guitar (hence more cash to go round).
JosephKuby 2 years ago

Garb0e 2 years ago
I agree about ditching Beau Hill.
JosephKuby 2 years ago
In regards to Reach for the Sky, if the middle-of-the-road tracks (No Surprise and Don't Bite the Hand that Feeds) were replaced with the left over tracks (Borrowed Time and Run Around with Me), the album would have been more consistent.
Also, the ballad 'I Want to Love you Tonight' is a very good song but the ballad Chances was a great one - all it needed was better lyrics and singing.
You can tell they were running out of ideas when they decided to use a Mickey Ratt song (City to City).
JosephKuby 2 years ago
I think Ratt should have teamed up with Phil Spector.
His status as a Beatles producer and him having worked with The Ramones would have given them not only more commercial appeal but make their trademark sound truly epic (I mean...he did pioneer the wall of sound after all).
Ed Kramer would have also been ideal as a producer since he worked with Beatles, Led Zep, Hendrix, Rolling Stones, AC/DC, Kiss and Anthrax.
Then there's the Crue/Metallica producer and Bon Jovi engineer/mixer Bob Rock.
JosephKuby 2 years ago
I can sympathize with Ratt wanting to work with Mike Stone. His production on Whitesnake's '87 LP was the '80s equivalent to Pantera's Far Beyond Driven (blues but with a very heavy sound). Unfortunately, he was too engulfed in his vices.
Even Beau's biggest critic, Juan, admitted that Reach for the Sky would have been a better album had they hired Beau right from the beginning.
Then again, they could have hired Mike Clink (Guns N' Roses) before Metallica hired him for ...and Justice for All.
JosephKuby 2 years ago
JosephKuby 2 years ago
I totally forgot about Mike Stone producing 87, for that I apologize. With that point taken into consideration I can empathize with their decision a bit more.
I still think Rock, Werman, Clink, or Wagener would have faired best. For some reason I think wagener would have done it well.
I do hope Ste releases a book on the ratt experiences. I'm strangely compelled by their rise and subsequent fall out of music.
Garb0e 2 years ago
As for dancing, I agree that it isn't awful, but it just lacks a punch. They failed to ever deliver a single to the masses like Round and Round or lay it down. I love Dance and Way Cool, but I could understand why they didn't catch on.
I'm definitely going to check out those songs that didn't make the Reach cut. I must say I absolutely love the album cover
Shame they didn't rest up and make reach and Dance into just 1 album. I think it's evident that they needed a break.
Garb0e 2 years ago
Robbin said that when he reunited with Bobby and Warren, they got along so well to the point that they realized the band should never have fallen out and disintegrated like that.
They all agreed that they should have took a break - one or two years, whatever it took.
Rob went on to say that it was constantly Ratt & Roll to the point that fatigue may have soured relationships.
After DU, they should have waited until '89 to make an album then they would see how bloated the pop metal scene was.
JosephKuby 2 years ago
On the German live video of Dance, I mentioned a fair bit as to why DU didn't have punch.
To elaborate - Robbin and Warren found an old beat up, funky Marshall amp with 25-watt Celestions.
To quote more from Robbin:
"It just has that twang to it, that classic Marshall sound. So rather than the high-tech stuff, we both plugged straight into a good little Marshall amp for most of the album. We didnt over-process, over-equalize, or do anything to it."
Hence why the album sounds flat.
JosephKuby 2 years ago
I think the problem with Ratt was that the singles could have been better. They should have released...
Between the Eyes and You Should Know by Now instead of Lay it Down and You're in Love.
Looking for Love, Take a Chance and 7th Avenue for the DU singles.
What It's Gonna Be and Bottom Line instead of Way Cool Jr. and I Want A Woman.
Can't Wait on Love instead of Lovin' you's a Dirty Job.
I think Scene of the Crime should have been the 4th single for OFTC (if they changed the swearing).
JosephKuby 2 years ago
I agree with you on some of these singles choices....and I love Between The Eyes....however....if they didn't release Lay It Down as a single, I think that would have been a BAD MOVE. That is one of their top 3 best songs in many people's minds.
Rocco11510 2 years ago
In that case, given how the B-side to "Lay it Down" was "Got me on the Line", they should have got "Between the Eyes" instead.
I've come to perceive Between the Eyes as a companion piece to Lay it Down (either as a prequel or sequel depending on which song was written first).
"You Should Know by Now" could replace the B-side that was on the "You're in Love" SP (i.e. Between the Eyes).
I think 'Dangerous but Worth the Risk' should have been the 3rd single versus What you Give is What you Get.
JosephKuby 2 years ago
@JosephKuby
There's B-Sides on MP3s?? Ha, just kidding. Looks like Warren is playing the Performance Center Corsair...absolutely rips it up
jcm8002204 2 years ago
Between the Eyes has a great hook and they almost dive into Def Leppard territory when shouting "You hardly notice". The end is my favorite part of that song!
CenobiteVictim 2 years ago
Me too. What I like about the ending is that it builds momentum before making a seamless transition where all we hear is the acoustic melody.
JosephKuby 2 years ago
The artist responsible for the album cover of Reach for the Sky was Jean-Francois Podevin.
If I was to make a best-of album featuring tracks from DU and RFTS, it would have City to City, 7th Avenue, Chain Reaction, It Doesn't Matter, Looking for Love, Enough is Enough, Bottom Line, What it's Gonna Be, Take a Chance and What I'm After.
Coincidentally, the original title for Dancing Undercover was Fine Mess* and that suits that track listing to a tee.
* It was already the title for a film.
JosephKuby 2 years ago
Robbin on whether they used any effects on Dancing Undercover:
"Not really - we use a little bit of echo. On the new record its basically dry."
My problem with the album is that on digital format, it sounds like it was recorded on a cassette recorder; it's not lively enough.
On vinyl it sounds better but I think had it been recorded live (or minus the reverb), the album would have a very energetic vibe to it.
It's a weird oxymoron - hyperactive songs with a humble production. Fairly feeble.
JosephKuby 2 years ago
Even in '87, Robbin knew that 'Enough is Enough':
"We are basically always on tour or recording. This year was the first time we really ever had a break. I had about eight weeks off, and my guitar was not the first thing on my mind. Its good to take a break from it for a while sometimes, because otherwise you stagnate."
In '89 (I think he may've wanted Clink):
"My current favorite band, who suits my tastes to a tee, is Guns and Roses. They are a true rock n roll band, with plenty of heart."
JosephKuby 2 years ago
JosephKuby 2 years ago
Have you seen the Behind the Music documentary yet?
I wish there was a DVD release so that we could see the uncut interviews. Juan got lots of screen time but Warren didn't say too much which made him Ratt's equivalent to Mick Mars.
Robbin had said that the only reason why the band didn't break up was due to the pursuit of wanting to make another hit (to pay bills).
It's because of the debt that Stephen left the band.
He even turned down the chance for Ratt to support Crue in late 1990.
JosephKuby 2 years ago
I read an interview with Steven Adler from metal sludge and his biggest royalty check was $850k, in nikki sixx's book the heroin diaries he has a part where he mentions he gets one for $650k, and this was during the success of theatre of pain.
I think with ratt's string of only platinum albums. world tours that got smaller and smaller in crowds, and the splitting between the 5 members that they just weren't banking the type of rockstar coin that you would think
but who really knows
Garb0e 2 years ago
I think it speaks volumes about Steven's biggest royalty check because in Slash's autobiography, he said that rather than each guy getting paid 20% per dollar, Axl refused to be on the same level as Steve - in fact, Axl became the highest grossing member of the band.
Stephen was the founder of Ratt and it makes me wonder how things were distributed in that band.
Even Slash had said (again, in his autobio) that he thought Stephen was a complete moron and despised seeing Ratt because of him.
JosephKuby 2 years ago
Apparently, when including the SP (singles) sales alongside the LP sales, Ratt's global success comes to roughly 30 million records sold (on par with Judas Priest).
I remember reading an interview where Bobby said he was able to buy several houses for some of his family members so it makes me wonder about the other guys. Robbin obviously blew a lot of his cash on heroin.
I know Bobby and Juan have sons so I can imagine there being a lot of pressure to make cash in the late '80s and early '90s.
JosephKuby 2 years ago

310stanger 2 years ago 12
Ratt were too underrated but at least they had some form of commercial success.
The most overlooked of bands were ones who never achieved the slightest bit of mainstream recognition (Savatage and Armored Saint).
I think the reason why Ratt tend to get grouped with Poison is because both bands did a melodic form of metal whilst dressing in a way that was more colorful than the standard black and tattooed look.
But even here, they don't look particularly all that abstract. They look very cool.
