  • @DanielStanfield. You're obviously someone of very high intelligence, skill, and social ability. I wish you the best.

  • @soulbooth Wow! Thank you for the powerful compliment. Soical ability. It's funny, before I learned Chinese, I was introverted. After I entered the Chinese environment, I became very social.

  • @DanielStanfiield introverted sounds like my current situation. Thank you for the inspiration black man.

  • America. Haven't been abroad yet.

  • Also, reading the book titled, "The Law of Success original 1925 edition" by Attorney Napoleon Hill help me to tighten up my game.

  • I have been using a particular method for over 11 years. I work everyday as a janitor, and use Mandarin to occupy my mind while sweeping and mopping. Otherwise, I get bored and start to think negative thoughts. Chinese is my escape from boredom. Mastering speaking, reading, writing and listening each require the same kind of method.

  • laudable, I love it. :)))) I am attempting to learn Manderin in the same way, you and your acumen renew hope in me!!!

    thanks.

  • I think daily practice, repetition and environment is the key. My study method: I keep one sentence with me on a note card and memorize while I am walking and avoid daydreaming about random thoughts. Every time I catch my self with idle time, I start repeating the sentence mentally until I'm bored with it or can say it out loud to a person who speaks Chinese. Once they understand and I have memorized it, I move on to a new sentence.

  • I work in a section 8 senior citizen apartment complex with 126 one bedroom units. 95% of the residents are from mainland China and Taiwan. They are all my teachers. Each day I go through the Chinese Daily newspaper, mark the words I don't know and then ask them for help while working as a janitor.

  • @DanielStanfiield So you live in China? Not sure where you reside.

  • Whoa :O How long did it took you to learn it?

  • six years and that's was by practicing on a daily basis at work in a Chinese environment.

  • the supervisor was chinese? "X

  • No. Anglo

  • School is not enough. The environment is the key.

  • Cantonese/Mandarin is quite unusal for a brother to learn..what motivated you man?

  • Thanks for asking. I was fired 3 times from a temp job by a supervisor who didn't like me based on my skin color. No one would help me so I prayed and asked God for help. The answer was to learn Chinese at work. I did. Then the same supervisor hired me permanent and doubled my wages..
