U speak of the truth my brutha, When i fiddle w/ the formers, i always try 2 recap the feelin' I had in '84,85,86 and'87. Which was a great one. Every now & Then i get that from the classics, Universe,Rts,Hftd and Generations lines. Great review, seems that we're on the same page, PEACE!
In 2008, I lost interest in Transformers due to the fact that most releases seem unappealing to me, the same happens for the next two years until recently when I got a Dark of the Moon Voyager Megatron (tempted by it's design) and realized how good it is really got me back into collecting Transformers. But it's a bittersweet victory since some older toys were sold out and I'm forced to buy the more pricey Japanese versions.
I'm not a big transformers fan but I do appreciate some of the toys and I do craze a figure or two here and there. My only beef with the DotM line is I do not dig the Optimus Prime design in that toy line.
A lot of people are judgmental and that's just human nature. When they see a grown man playing with a toy, for the most part it doesn't look right but they neglect to see the other side of it. That we just do what we want because we want to.
@acicon dude, I bought some of the new beyblades recently and I have a blast just spinning em around from time to time. I loved beyblade when it first came out and it may not look right for a young adult to be playing with spinning tops but it's fun, it's simple. I know it's a kid's toy and I don't hold it against that.
@acicon - If it feels good, just do it(as long as it doesn't harm you or anyone else!). I'm happy to read that you're enjoying something in such a pure manner. It's something that I think can only be beneficial to our society. Denial of personal truths such as the desire to have harmless fun, regardless of social taboo, can lead to unbalanced individuals who could cause harm to others.
I'm happy to be back and I'm grateful for the warm welcome you and everyone else has given me.
@acicon - Oddly, I find the DotM Voyager OP toy unusually appealing. It has goofy proportions and is not very accurate to the design in the movie but there's a charm about it that I like. I bought it for the cool looking MechTech weapon but I found myself enjoying the toy. I may have to review it at some point.
@Guiltaur tbh, now that I'm getting into the dotm toys, the Voyager Prime is growing on me. But if I can get my hands on a Hunt for Decepticons Battle Blades Prime, that will be the prime that would go in my collection.
And this is why I love model kits more than toys (even though they're both classified as such in general) - because I admit I don't play with toys the way I did as a kid. But with kits, there's the added fun of the build, and the pride you get when you sit back and look at your creation and say "I built that."
So I say, build kits! Take your time with them! Paint them! Detail them! Pose them often! If you're not having fun with your hobby, you're doing something very wrong.
@ckaicydek - I agree! We should enjoy the experience of building and customizing our models. Sure, they're a little delicate, but if we can pose them then let's pose them to our hearts content. Indeed, if we can't have fun with our hobbies, we may need to re-evaluate what we're doing in the first place.
There's a similar topic about comics where collectors would keep them sealed tight in their bags and never read them, & that's a big shame. Toys are pretty much the same way. If you're not having fun with them, then honestly, what's the point?
One way I like to gauge this attitude is to think back to the Toy Story movies, and ask myself, "Would these guys be happy with the way I've been treating them?" Toys don't like to be damaged, but they probably would like being ignored even less.
@ckaicydek - I'm a comic fan too and I've seen that side of collecting where people have the comics but keep them locked up in their bags, backboarded, and filed away forever. It's a shame. I collect comics to read!
I know what you mean, i want to get back to uploading vids and making models but.... sadly I cant afford anything atm, ive been saveing up for a new controller, phone, and parts needed for my airsoft 1911. then I got hit by depression from my uncle passing. right now I want to shake paint andmodels and scream why cant you be free lol
@123asd1 - Life is difficult at times, my friend! Despite your desire to get back into making videos and working on models, you have to deal with other things in your life one step at a time. If you dive straight back into things without properly resolving other concerns, you might regret it.
We're here for you and if you feel like venting or just getting something off your chest, feel free to shoot a vid. It might feel good just to vocalize some of the things weighing on your mind.
@Guiltaur I do start takeing vids but... then I delete them lately I got 3 transformers and I love them remind me of g1 blurr and one is the soundwave from war for cybertron, and back fire its awesome :)
@wewyllenium - I agree. A lot of Gundam and Gunpla fans seem to forget that despite the more complex themes of the fiction and Tomino's intent, the Gundam franchise is built around the concept of a brand that is marketed towards kids.
@Guiltaur well thats more sunrise and bandai, some of the uc series are meant to be more series and from what ive read hes not to happy with how they take some of his series, like turn as pilot was meant to be a girl from what ive been told. I think he wants a story told more then money, thats bandai and sunrise doing.
@123asd1 - Yes, Tomino didn't want a commercialized product but at the same time, he's the one who decided to go into business with a toy company and an animation company that are all about selling toys and plamo so he knew what he was getting into.
My point is that I agree with wewyllenium and that Gunpla is taken too seriously at times considering that it's largely marketed towards the youth demographic.
I feel Hasbro was thinking about the kids with this toyline, as that is what they're really aimed for. And I agree with you on the enjoyment of collecting these figures.
@Slashercon - I'm glad that Hasbro is not forgetting the kids, not that they really ever did but I do think that they over complicated their toy designs with the previous TF movie toylines. I think the DotM toys offer accessibility to kids while also incorporating clever design and engineering that hardcore collectors and fans can appreciate.
@Murtherful - We can always revisit our childhood, momentarily, by going with our gut reaction and admit to enjoying seemingly simple things from time to time. :)
I truly believe that if you are a toy reviewer and you experience a genuine sense of fun and wonderment, it will come across in the review, and therefore the review will be that much better!
I enjoy your considerate and analytical approach to toy reviewing. You are also very well-spoken. Those characteristics are what set you apart (in a good way) from a lot of toy reviewers.
Welcome back! Thank you for mentioning myself and my channel! :)
I'm glad you have rediscovered the fun aspect of toy collecting. It did not come across in your reviews that you had lost that fun feeling.
My recent experience of having fun and feeling a sense of wonderment in regards to toys was when I un-boxed and explored the 2010 Star Wars Legacy Collection AT-AT. Much like a kid, I was pushing all the buttons and posing my Star Wars figures with this toy.
@likeits1985 - Don't mention it! It was the least I could do because it was your DotM toy reviews and your response to my question in the Laserbeak review that I realized what I had lost sight of.
During the last few reviews of mine, many many months ago, I found that it took longer to shoot the reviews because I just didn't have 100% motivation. I still enjoyed the fun of what I reviewed but it became something of a chore to plan reviews. I'm getting back into the swing of things now...
...that I've remembered why I do what I do here at YT. It's all about sharing the enjoyment of a hobby that all of you guys in our community share.
If it wasn't for fellow collectors/reviewers/fans like you, I wouldn't have ever started reviewing here. Our hobby is great and so is the community we've become.
Now that I think back on it, I feel that i stopped making reviews recently because I didn't quite feel I was having fun. But now I realized that I need to be able to enjoy and simply have fun with what I do, and I will probably go to a much more simplistic approach to how I do things.
@Rikku558 - I know how you feel about reviewing. I also felt the fun of reviewing becoming less at a point and I needed to step back in order to re-assess my motivation for reviewing before being able to come back to Youtube. I got caught up in the process of doing reviews and I'm trying to avoid that mistake from here on out. Like you said, we need to be able to enjoy and simply have fun with what we do.
Good to see you back Guiltaur! as for the video, I agree, i think a lot of collectors lose sight of the 'childishness' of the toys. I know a few collectors, who only buy to leave them in the package, which irks me, but it also makes me somewhat sad whenever i see a reviewer that knocks a toy because it's not as articulate as a more expensive toy, or if theres one small flaw with the toy that can be fixed with some TLC. I've never lost that inner child part of collecting, in fact, thats why
@commandermetal I love the new DOTM toys. They provide that, toy like feel, while still leaving them nice too look at on a shelf. I also LOVE the cyberverse toys, because i can sit here and transform it for like an hour at a time. Even with my more expensive toys (Figma, S.H) I still "play" With them, occasionally adjusting the poses, or doing photo shoots. In short, Like you said, people Just need to get back to basics, and stop taking it so seriously, and just have fun
@commandermetal - It's great that you've never lost or forgotten the fun of collecting. I absolutely love the DotM toyline. I think it strikes the perfect balance between accessibility to kids and design sophistication that devoted collectors can enjoy. The previous TF movie toylines seemed to be focused on complexity, partly out of necessity due to the TF movie character designs, but DotM shows that you can have clever as well as intuitive transformations.
I have always seen this as just fun. Nothing more, nothing less. It simple means that I consider whole collecting to be fun. Some times I transform transforming toys and model kits that get some change. After that I display them in that mode before one day transforming them back to mode that they were before that and displaying them in that mode. Some times it feels like work with miniatures like when I paint that 100th or so skeleton to my VC army for WHFB.
@Mecha82 - Wow, I can't imagine painting so many miniatures. Then again, it would be very cool to have an army of painted troops.
Personally, a large part of my forgetting about simply having fun with my hobbies is that I got caught up in reviewing things and focused on mainly that instead of just the joy of collecting.
good job nice things.
