I suggest you use a forstner bit rather than a spade bit because the forstner bit can overlap as you drill and the forstner bit leaves flat and clean holes. Also, when marking the outline of the mortise plate it is a good idea to use a sharp utility knife to outline the plate (going deep enough to allow a wood chisel mostly remove the waste material). One last thing, it is very important that you drill the mounting screw holes straight and center ( a vix bit is best for this ).
Thanks so much for this video....I have to replace a broken lock on a door, and my house was built in 1888. The hole that the old lock came from was smaller than the one that would fit the new lock. You have given me a great tip on how to enlarge it! Until this video, I was actually going to give up and just replace the door :)
Thanks for the vid, I'm a single mother and am not to savy on tools and there usage, this was the best video I have found that explained excatly what I needed in easy to understand directions, Thanks for the directions!!!
Great videos Bob, your very entertaining. A little tip on the door lock thing. If you mark the centre vertical line of your mortice with a marking gauge or a nail and straight edge you can then centre the drill bit in the groove you have formed and it won't wander and damage the door edge. Sorry, but i noticed how wonky your line of holes were.
you did this twice in your career ---what the heck ---how long is that ? heck you only look about 22 yrs old ---- HEH just pulling your leg Bob ---great job --- I actually understood the whole video --- no fancy stuff just practical advice. I liked it --- I'm subscribing
I'm doing this exact same thing in my nyc apt. Well I'm replacing the mortise sets so the cut outs are there. Problem is they aren't big enough for the new mortise. Now I can look for a side cutting drill bit! Thanks Bob!! Great video!!
Great advice. I also like to clamp a piece of 1X or ply to each side of the door around the mortise area . I've done this ever since that day I blew out one of the sides of an expensive mahogony door whilst chiseling near the edge :-0 !
i just want to thank you for uploading your videos. i'm a new to all this and have no clue how to do repair at home. one thing i know for sure is that i need to buy a lot of tools.
If you don't mind me asking how much does it cost to rent in your area? Are they available to rent in most rental outfits or are they difficult to find? Thanks in advance!+++Bob
Yet another good video Bob. I have had one of those bits for a few years now as well but only ever used if for aluminium door catches, never thought to use it for the one mortise lock I have installed, I use a router... Mine is a gold colour. Keep up the good work!
Also Bob that drill you use, You seem to really love that drill! Seems like a trusty drill. Is it Dewalt by any chance? I dont see you using many Cordless in many of your vids? I love the freedom.
Cheers Bob. Looks like a great bit, I normally chisel out the rest but it takes ages. I always thought those bits were a bit of a gimmick so never looked into them. I will now! Cheers!
thanks for this great tip. i've used the mounted plunging rig, and although very efficient and clean, the cost, the setup, the bulk and the mess simply aren't worth it for the occasional mortise lock. thanks again for sharing.
Hi Bob, I've been watching your videos for quite a while, and want to let you know I really appreciate them.
I have a door-related question that I hope you could give me some inputs on. I'm turning a closet into a wine cellar, and I have 2 options for the door. 1)Buy a new cellar door 2)Insulate the old door. If I get a new door, it probably won't match the patterns of the rest of the doors in my home. Please advise.
Thanks again. Wishing you and your family a blessed Christmas season.
Nice vid Bob. Those new oscillating tools kick ass at that too. Harbor Freight has a good knock off for $40.00 item number 65700. I just got it and have used for so many thing. Check it out if you can. They now have a store on Ebay if you don't have store by you.
SO far I have used it to under cut a door jam, cut out the opening for the hinges of a door and pop some tile off that was cracked. I still can't believe this thing works as good as it does and just for shits and giggles I cut through a 2X4. It does make a lot of noise though. Right now HF doesn't have as many blades available like the FEIN one.
Thanks for posting this video. I have installed hundreds of those mortise locks. The last one I did was around 15 years ago and the way you did it was exactly how I used to do. No side cutting bit on those days. I also chiseled out the face plate first, after everything was marked, before I drilled the mortise holes and that would make it much easier to fit and finish the job nicely.
I loved the Truss Lifting video you posted a few month ago. Keep them coming!
Thank you for your post.Sometimes I try to imagine what it was like to do all of this with hand tools 100+ years ago.We really have it pretty easy considering!+++Bob

Simple, just go to Home Depot and buy all the tools you need and when you're done, just return them for a refund. LOL

Never knew there was such a bit. I've used regular bits to do the same thing, but it doesn't work too great. I'll keep an eye out for one. Thanks
Mostly I do use a sharp chisel. I got a mallet years ago made for chiseling and I have no idea why it works better than a hammer but it sure seems to.

I do have a harbor freight close by.The knock-off you are referring to is that of the FEIN multimaster TOOL?"===bOB

YES. From $400 to $40. Not bad.
