Everyone has their own opinion which of course is fine. What I hate is the disrespectfulness on either end when making the comments. I love this version, and it is completely different than the Beatles. There is no argument that Karen Carpenter's voice is just purely the best. John Lennon and Paul Mcartney had nothing but praise for this version. Its just different! John Lennon also liked Anne Murray's version of "You Won't See Me". Anyway, Karen.. you are so sorely missed.
i came up with a theory that involves the book of genesis (fig leaves) buddha (sitting under the bohid fig tree) jesus (many sayings about figs) ross horne's book (new health revolution) and science (figs are the most important source of food for fruit eating rainforest animals). i then experimented on the figs by eating mainly dried figs (same brand) for over 6 years now and found cycles which i related to the numbers in psgs 11/12 of the book of revelations. this theory has gone everywhere.

@Tresfres Actually not, Read Little Girl Blue: The Life Of Karen Carpenter, then you'll find out that Richard is not evil at all. The movie Karen Carpenter Story, 95% of bullshit and 5% of truth, very few people knew the truth back then
karen's voice was so pure and sweet that it could put someone's soul at peace. she had the kind of voice that was so soothing. too bad that she is no longer with us.
gosh i dinnet know they did this song? i must say i prefer the Beatles, but Karen has such a brill beautiful voice that no one can deny her that!! and @extascy: i agree, she does make it look so easy!
Amazing arrangement of a Beatles song. How's that for original. Lord, what a voice and fantastic arrangement. Thanks to Burt for signing them. He sure was a winner.
@Adequates63 Because it's sappy sweet, which is politically incorrect/not macho. I was (formerly) a closet Carpenter fan at the age of 9, when "Close to You" came out, as I fell in love with that soothing, comforting voice, which was very against the heavy/acid rock of the time. Now I'm old, bold, and out of the closet on The Carpenters, as their music is enduring.
@greenwich1754 I used to tell my rocker friends that the Capenter's albums in my record collection were my sister's that got mixed up with mine. But now I am proud to say they were mine and were always mine!
I know some Beatles fans don't like this version of this song but I think it is beautiful. Karen had the voice of an angel and Richard is an arranging genious!
@kentaappel Yes - I remember Richard saying he would never try to "exact copy" an original, as (a) he either couldn't, or ( b) was respectful of the original. Besides, Richard is keyboards, and Beatles were guitars (on this song). I like to use the analogy of when Shemp replaced Curly - ok, not as good as the original, but Shemp had his own style & delivery, and I grew to like him. BTW, that's funny attributing the Carpenter records to your sister!
My mother loved them, so she told me when I was 5. After I entered an elementary school, I quitted listening to these songs. I thought they are out-of-date. The time has past. When I was a high school student, my teacher recommended me to hear it. Then I noticed her pronunciation is very clear, so it's very easy for non-native speakers to understand. Moreover, I found her beauty seemed to shine though their songs. Since then, I started listening to their songs again. I LOVE THE CARPENTERS.
I think this song is breathtakingly beautiful. Yes, it's a different interpretation from The Beatles - maybe because it is not the same people singing it(!) Both versions are done by true artists....
I remember the 1st time I heard this song by The Carpenters; the distinctive opening notes caught my attention -- and then when Karen's voice came in it literally gave me goosebumps (cliche that it is).
I will never forget it.
BTW, Jewel's 'Foolish Games," the 1st time I heard it, did the same.
@rkernell I remember reading that John Lennon actually preferred the Carpenters' version, saying something to the effect that "we should have done it like the Carpenters". He was a big fan of Karen, too.
The crazy thing about her voice is that she makes it look so easy. That sound that comes out is so soothing to the ears. Those inflections are simply amazing.

The Beatles and Carpenters versions appeal to different people, I don't know why people are hating on the Carpenter's for doing a cover. They did a good job! I personally like this version better because I love Karen's unique voice and their style, but that's not saying the Beatles didn't do a good job. Be happy it's the Carpenters and not some trash from today that did a cover!
This is one of Karen's best vocal performances in 1973 with this re-recorded version of the 1969 track. I don't think I've ever heard anyone sing so flawlessly.

Wow.i didnt think that one through,so if theres something wrong just blame me and no one else
According to what I hear & see for that matter any Loyalty that Doug Strawn had for Richard Carpenter is out the window, especially being that he has Little Girl Blue on his Facebook page. Being part of The Carpenters is FOREVER. Doug should write a real Carpenters book, not a pamphlet like Mr. Schmidt did. Strawn has alot of fans, myself being his biggest, but Little Girl Blue Doug, c'mon. You & me both know what Karen would think of that book!
@vmuto1 An unauthorized bio, in the case of the Carpenter family, equals TRUTH. Finally! FINALLY!!! This book was a NEW YORK TIMES Editor's Choice book, not to mention a PEOPLE Magazine Book Pick. The reviews are stellar, except those from you, vmuto1. Get over it. Have you even READ the book???
I prefer the Beatles version, but this one is more musical. I love the piano at the beginning! Karen had an outstanding voice, but many don't realize Richard was (is) as great a musician as she was!
Amo os carpenters, desde aprimeira vez que vi e ouvi, me apaixonei. Quando assisti ao filme, me comovi com a estória desses irmãos estremamente talentosos. Não tem como não gostar, né? Fala sério!!!
@lukejake7771 But the Carpenters couldn't have done a good job on this if the Beatles didn't write the song and it ddn't exist. By the way, I love both versions
I love both versions of this song for different reasons. The Beatles version conveys the immediacy of the event of a lover who is leaving to a far away place. This one captures that mood of acceptance of the hopelessness of the situation
We live in a world where the media just adds fuel to an already burning fire.Randy Schmidt is no different!!! How much substance can there be to an Author who purposely only puts part of Richard Carpenters head on a cover of a book that he has written, and then he states, when you get done reading the book, people will understand. Little Girl Blue is a mere Pamphlet compared to all the Facts that he couldn't get, some things "MUST" stay private Randy, because we know you would print it! GB KC
@vmuto1 You really do not get it do you!? Karen's personal voice has been silenced due to her death and she was even silenced when she was alive! While Richard and his family loved Karen they ALWAYS made Richard the star! Within the Carpenter home everything was about Richard and Karen was merely used as a method to make Richard a star! I am so thankful that Randy wrote this book. Karen was finally able to be heard even if it was from the grave. Randy used the comments of friends
@vmuto1 who were never allowed to speak of Karen's true self before and Richard was given the opportunity to speak with the author and he declined. AND...Tom Burris has a a gag order on him so he is not allowed to speak of Karen. Personally? I don't think Richard should have been on the book cover at all! You want to know what kind of person Richard was or is? read the part about his reaction to her solo album. The man is a selfish tool!
The Carpenters made a beautiful recording with this song. John Lennon once said that Karen had the most beautiful female voice he'd ever heard, and it didn't bother him one bit that they sang this song. So for those of you who feel this song is "crap" even Lennon would have disagreed with you.
@emsmedic2002 Kudos to the Beatles for writing this song. Lovely lyrics, this is a lovely redition. The mood and the type of music is more suited to the sad lyrics envisaged by the Beatles and performed beautifully by Karen Capenter.
@emsmedic2002 just because Lennon liked it and would disagree with those people doesn't mean that it should change their opinion even slightly, people have different opinions and it's no problem that some people don't like this. I myself like this version, i just think the whole idea of "Lennon loves it so you should be ashamed of your opinion" is ridiculous.
I would like to put this one out there & roll the Dice for the world to read & see what they think of this idea. I would Love more than anything in the world for Richard Carpenter to get the Carpenter band together (including Herb, & Burt who were a Big part) & do a tribute show for Karen &Tony. Why not one more time, for the good old times. Everyones getting older each & every year, I really believe in my heart that this would be special & Karen could be included on a Big Screen with Pictures
Such a great version of this song! Over-dub heaven! And I suspect this video filmed on a snow-covered mountain pays homage to the scene in the Beatles film "Help!" where the fab four perform this song frolicking in the snow in the Alps. Fantastic!
@tiagoaoa So they should have kept it/made it Lesbian? I suppose they could have supplanted he/she with "it", but then cousin It would have been offended.
I am surprised that my 27 year old fiance who loves rock from every decade actually likes the Carpenters' version of this song more than the Beatles'. She thinks they sing it too upbeat for a sad song. I never really thought about it, but she's right.
From Italy: tks for uploading one of the jewels of the po music!!! It's hard to do an original different piece other than authors Beatles (who made the first jewel)
La voz mas linda, melodiosa de EEUU. en aquella década de los 70; aunque ella ya no esté con nosotros la gran Karen Carpenters, sigue viva en nuestros corazones.
Karens the best! My parents took me to see them when I was in 6th grade and just starting to play the drums. I was immediately in love and hooked for life. They can even take a Beatles song and make it their own. With Richard's orchestration and Karen's voice it has their signature. When the bass guitar lays down the groove and the drums kick in with the backbeat it is powerful. Thanks for the post! John C
Love the Carpenters but this is perhaps the worst cover they did. They slaughtered it!
Richard was the real talent of the two -- a musical genius. As nice as her voice was, Karen could never sing the "YOU" notes well. It's sad that Karen died. She had a lot of life left in her. Anerexia messes with young women in our society. It killed her.
I never get tired of listening to you Karen, your voice is like a tender whisper,I like this version more than the beatles',they are over rated, the lyrics were nice !but the voices were awful!
As for The Carpenters & The Hall of Fame. Look friends, The Carpenters did their own thing, ONE BIG THING, that people should know is they didn't sign up to be on anyones team, or kiss anyones ass. They recorded, did touring galore around the world,, recieved grammies, best selling American group between 1970-80. Richard even says,"you dont have to like us, but you can't say we're not good" They we're ORIGINAL, & that pisses people off still today. Even Donny & Marie has seem to forget KC & RC.
I love both versions of this song. The Beatles are unbeatable, of course, but this is a quite different take on the song that is effective too; melancholy, pretty and Karen's voice gives it an emotional tug like no one else could. I'm happy to have both versions.

With each day that goes by, now going on 10 months, I'm still sickened by the fact that Karen's friends Carol, Debbie & Frank actually "ALLOWED" Randy Schmidt to bring both himself & his book to East Haven & even worse Nathan Hale Elementary School. I Love & Respect all three of you & I'm really glad that the most precious & private things about Karen Randy will NEVER have to know. The post reaction that Mr. Schmidt was there was Not well received by East Haven. Still isen't!
@ThroughRock What's been disgraced - the Beatles or the Carpenters? Yeah, Yeah, I get it, everyone hates what the Carpenters did to the Beatles, but Richard himself said he could never or would never be able to cover/copy the Beatles. He re-structured the song and made it his/their own. They admired the Beatles, and John himself told Karen she had a lovely voice. I see it as fans of the Beatles (i.e. the Carpenters) paying homage to a major influence in their lives. Karen is AWESOME!

Anyone can write a book about a music artist, however there are only a handful of people that would really know the true story about the particular artist. In Elvis Presley's case, Joe Esposito, George Klein, & Larry Geller would be a few that knew all the in & outs about Elvis. In Karen's case there are a handful that could write as well-but Loyalty prevents this really "TRUE" Biography from being written. Karen was all good, & I know she Loved children :-)
@Guardian208 No, Richard and Karen Carpenter are from the USA. They were born in New Haven, Connecticut and moved to Downey, California in their youth.

I prefer the Beatles version, but this one is more musical. I love the piano at the beginning! Karen had an outstanding voice, but many don't realize Richard was (is) as great a musician as she was!

Even though I still like the Beatles version better, Karen Carpenter has a beautiful voice and did this song justice. I like this version, too.
Respect for both artists.

GB KC
vmuto1 6 months ago
@vmuto1 You really do not get it do you!? Karen's personal voice has been silenced due to her death and she was even silenced when she was alive! While Richard and his family loved Karen they ALWAYS made Richard the star! Within the Carpenter home everything was about Richard and Karen was merely used as a method to make Richard a star! I am so thankful that Randy wrote this book. Karen was finally able to be heard even if it was from the grave. Randy used the comments of friends
way2bea 5 months ago

MRSbumblbeebaby 5 months ago
@emsmedic2002 Kudos to the Beatles for writing this song. Lovely lyrics, this is a lovely redition. The mood and the type of music is more suited to the sad lyrics envisaged by the Beatles and performed beautifully by Karen Capenter.

viceisthename 4 months ago
@emsmedic2002 just because Lennon liked it and would disagree with those people doesn't mean that it should change their opinion even slightly, people have different opinions and it's no problem that some people don't like this. I myself like this version, i just think the whole idea of "Lennon loves it so you should be ashamed of your opinion" is ridiculous.
