James needs to go learn where this Work is taught by those who were taught by Gurdjieff. While he is talking about divided attention, which, by the way, is not the just same as self-remembering, his hands are waving about without any.
Believe me, there are people who really know this Work.
Have you seen his Movements? He thinks the Movements are some kind of martial arts, and unperturbed by the fact that the real movements can be found here on YouTube, he stands there and lies to us.
when you say double attention you come to think about 2 attentions...but divided you can have even more divisions....so in a way no limits to how many attentions you can have..
Its means to concentrate, to notice what we see, to listen to what we hear, to feel what we touch, to savour what we taste and smell, and to be mindfull of what we think. To fully focus on the information we are absorbing or the experience we are having while at the same time allowing our brain to make appropriate associations and mental pictures of the information without allowing external stimuli to influence your concentration at all.
I have read many books written by Gurjieff and his students. Do you think we have a shot without a school?. I have tried to practice the exercises (self remembering, not identifying, not inner considering) but even if it works for a while the mechanical life gets me again.
Try this, drop negative words, stay away from stress, TV and negative situations for a while and see what happens. It can be a fight for sure, in a negative world. I got there by dropping what I called judgmental words and paradoxical I got good judgment, something I never had before. People are telling me it works for them. If you forget one thing a negative judgmental word will remind you to drop them. Hope you win the battle. Hey, let me know it you do. It's always encouraging.
