This is clearly not a penalty, let alone an "intent to injure". What nonsense coming from non-hockey players on these boards. Watch again. Don't watch OV, watch Gonchar and it's easy to see what happened. OV had Gonchar set up for a BIG HIT. Gonchar knew this and dodged to his left but dragged his right leg behind and got clipped on the knee. Unfortunate for him, but HE made this happen, not OV.

Well, I'm not a professional, but I do play hockey, and I have say that I thought there was intent to make contact. Gonchar tried to make a play where he pokes the puck around Ovechkin and will stay inside. Ovechkin saw this and clearing bends his knee out towards Gonchar to make contact. That's reckless and dangerous. As for a penalty, you can trip a guy with any part of your body. Check your rulebook before saying, "This is clearly not a penalty..." He's lucky he got a trip and not five.

He was not heading directly towards Gonchar, he was heading directly for the puck, and even hit the puck with his stick before changing direction at the last moment for the hit.

If you actually watch the video, Gonchar ran into Ovechkin while he was going for the puck. Ovechkin had his eyes on the puck the whole time, and only looked up when he saw Gonchar about to run into him. His stick was trying to grab the puck as it slid past

The only reason this was called at all was because Gonchar unfortunately got hurt. We all know penalties can cause injuries, but since when does an injury cause a penalty??? If Gonchar didn't get hurt, no one would've ever questioned OV"s play. Gonchar tried to dodge a hit, but left his right knee in the middle of a busy street. That's what happened.

Ovie's right leg didn't leave the ice til after the hit, Ovie could've had his knee fucked up just as easily as gonchar's. My opinion, they both seemed to be going for the puck but at the last second, they had a "oh fuck!" moment. Definitely unfortunate but it's really turning out to be a huge thing when it really looked like an accident. I'm a lightning fan so this is totally unbiased.

It happens in sport when an explosive player like Ovechkin goes for a hit. If the receiving player attempts to dodge the hit he is the only one that knows what the outcome could be. Either take a big hit from an energy guy or take the risk of dodging it.
