how do you watch this movie more then once. I mean yes its fucking awesome but its too damn sad ._. I think i'd cry myself to death. . . and I'm a 20+ year old dude
This was one of the saddest movies ever, I saw it in class [[ World Cultures, you know, WWI and II? Yeah. ]] I must admit, almost everyone but me cried. When his mom died, however...I almost cried. Hehe, fail. Anyway, it was one of the saddest movies ever, as I said, and I thought it was so amazing and so inspirational, Haiyo Miazaki[Sp?] is the best Japanese film maker ever.
@Realalovesme Grave of the Fireflies is actually an Isao Takahata film, not Hayao Miyazaki. It was, however, animated by Studio Ghibli, which has produced almost all of Hayao Miyazaki's famous films. Ghibli also created several other Takahata films, including Pom Poko and My Neighbors the Yamadas (not landmark films like Grave of the Fireflies, but pretty good all the same).
im 14 and i saw it :) the aunt is a bitch i hate her i got so fucking annoyed with her. alot of people say the little girl is annoying .. how? ... shes a little fucking girl. most little kids cry 24/7 she was just happy ...
I hated aunt too when I was little too, but I grew up to be an adult and understood her pain a little bit. War brings out worst part of human beings. She was also a victin, trying to save her direct family... So sad.
Whenever I eat a full meal I think how it must be for the downtrodden Like Seita & Setsuko God welcomes back those he loves most sooner than the ones he does not that's why evil stays longer in the world. The movie is based on true events that happened the author lost one of his sister's to bombing's and the smaller one who was around four to starvation that's why he wrote to the book in her memory probably a big part of his soul died but he lived ........It's a great movie against war : )
Ill admit it. I started to cry at the part when the 4 year old girl started hallucinating and eating mud/marbles. Then showed the brother making a funeral pyre. Oh man wtf. Was there a reason America firebombed civilians? Or was this normal in ww2? Shit man wars are horrible.
I watched this movie back in 2001. I was warned it would mess with your emotions and touch your soul. This film is beautiful and an amazing piece of work. I would suggest to anyone interested in movies, anime, war, or finding pure emotion in media to watch this. This is one of those movies that changes and touches you forever.
@martinezmarcio1 I think the film's an allegory. Seita's stubbornness and its effect upon Setsuko is emblematic of the Emperor's treatment of the Japanese people during the Second World War, particularly as his nation's defeat became inevitable.
@DaveUndertaker you are right, i think seita and people of japan and people of us have brainwashed thinking who's going to won or lose, they had Propaganda back than, and it was sad
Yes they don´t say OH THE AMERICAN PLANES, that´s what it make this film so good, it´s the only anti-war movie i´va seen, all the other ends up with some glory of one country.
i just saw this movie yesterday. a lot of my friends who have seen the movie and people in general whove seen it say they hate the aunt, but if you guys really think about it, they're low on food and their country is in a war. seita isn't really doing anything i mean he could be helping somehow but he just spends his whole day doing nothing. im pretty sure i would kick someone out if they were doing that.
I never ever cry to movies but this made me cry all the way through latter the quarter. I feel extreme guilt whenever I think I'm eating more than I need. dumb I know.
*spoiler warning*
But the part when the young girls is pretending to eat sweets instead of marbles and made mud balls and pretended they were rice balls, it got to me.
this movie kicks you when you're down. when they escape their aunt and you think she's out of the picture, you find out that at some point she pointlessly told setsuko that her mother is cold in the ground. at the end of the movie when its revealed that both seita and setsuko suffered horrible untimely deaths and the film is just about over, there is a montage showing that when seita went out looking for food, setsuko was forced to play by herself and be completely alone for long periods
the aunt do have a point in the very first place. the boy should somehow help the aunt do some chores or something like that. but all in all the movie was good. :)
@godefroy28 well the anime doesnt go into complete detail, but seita put himself in charge of taking care of his sister. he most likely helped with chores and took care of setsuko. he was the one who sold his own mothers clothes to get them food,if you remember. and this is wartime,he was only a kid,I bet getting a job was hard, since there was lack of work, food, etc.
This guy's seen GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES nine or ten times? That's amazing. I mean I agree the film is a masterpiece and a must-see, however it's so depressing most people can only watch it once.
It was a super sad movie but i takes alot more to make me cry. But who here had some kind of need for the air raids to hit the Aunts house?! Like for each one that was about to happen i was saying to my self please let it hit there house!
This movie was absolutely incredible, and is in my top five favorite anime movies. It was so sad, and it moved me to tears. Great movie!! Thank you Mr. Takahata!!
yep i hated the aunt shes the devil imo! i cried during it, its so bad what happens i recommend it to anime-haters and they will cry if they watch it! I cant watch the grave of the fireflies its too sad once is enough for me :*(
The movie is absolutely beautiful in it's sadness.
Japanese seem to have something for these topics, I recommend you to watch the movie again after listening to Takemitsu's "all that the man left behind when he died". You can find it here watch?v=sZCClwoJiBE
The song isn't related to the movie, but strangely fitting nontheless. Someone should make a Video that combines the song with scenes from the movie
Miyazaki was co-producer (?) of this film. It was completely directed by Takahata. I'm not sure if Takahata oversaw the animation entirely, but Miyazaki only had an accompanying role in this film.
This movie almost moved me to tears also. I was tearing up, and I was actually moved by it. I've almost cried in a couple cheap tearjerkers, but I can't remember a movie that truly moved me to near tears except this one. Certainly the only anime I remember.
My college professor made me watch this movie today in history class. And I would have to say it was worth my time. A great movie even though we did not have time to finish the movie. I missed the last 20 minutes and now am stuck wondering what the hell I missed. Stoped at the part where the boy said that his sister never woke back up again when she was sick. Can some one feel me in on how it ends?
After that part, Seita goes and buys a coffin, and some hay to burn her. He starts the fire, then watches it all day. The movie then ends with "I never went to the shelter again"
as a big movie buff, i have NEVER seen a movie that's made me cry. i've seen movies that moved me or made me feel a certain way, but i can seriously watch steel magnolias, the color purple and ET back to back and not shed a tear. but this one movie ripped out my heart, stomped on it and gave it back to me. and my heart is made out of titanium enforced concrete. it's that sad.
I said IN MY OPINION what the fuck is wrong with you guys I personaly found the ending of trust and betrayal sadder because Kenshin and Tomoe made such an amazing fucking couple second only to kouta and Lucy/Kaede from elfen lied..
finally someone else who seen it more than once and i agree about the ending though ruouni kenshin trust and betrayal has a better ending in my opinion.
this is the only movie that has ever made me cry no other show, movie, story or anything has made me cry I love this movie 100 out of 5 stars in my book
@brollyhero99 I agree, however the one problem I had with this movie is that it apparently never occured to Saita to take Setsuko and move back in with the aunt. I don't care how nasty she was, living with her would have to be better than starving to death.
Well the last time I checked it was Hayao Miyazaki. Well who did then? I know it is a Studio Ghibli Production. Maybe didn't animate it but he mightve been the director still making it a Mkyazaki film
I had to pay 40 bucks for the 2 disc set (used) about a year ago, but it was worth it. It's hard to believe how good the animation is for being over 20 years old. I showed this movie to my mom last night and she was crying at the end.
I think the power of the film does not lie in the dubbing, it lies in the imagery of the film. Through the film, you watch this little girl whither away, and when she dies, it hits you like a tank. It builds you up for a heart wrenching death. The dubbing does help because it creates characterization so you can relate the characters to people you know, and that often causes the heart break.
I do cry during the dub! Whatever language it is you would have to be a "spiteful fucking nasty bitch lady" to not cry at their situation or be to caught up in how much the dub sucks o pay attention to the story.
i totally agree.. the only movie that actually makes me straight out break down and cry (only in japanese with eng subs). good movie to watch with a girl.... if you want her to think you're a total pussy, because for some messed up reason that i can't explain, most girls don't get very emotional watching this movie..
haha my gf cried so much... we watch it on a computer cafe, the people might be thinking I poked her or somthing.. the movie was so sad at the same time great.. cant explain it..
Movies generally don't make me cry, but Grave of the Fireflies did. This guy was right, the movie is that good. Watch it as soon as you can, you won't regret it.
I would reconmend Laputa castle in the sky, thats a good movie, and two animes not made by this director, brave story and steamboy. I would cheak those two out aswell, they are very well made anime films in my book.

yeah i'm like you. freakin hate yugioh. never watch inuyash whatever don't wanna. graves of fire fly. freakin awesome. i freakin listen to rap and play ball. i still cried.
full metal alchemist and deathnote are my favourite anime. they have a really great story you should watch it but ithink you've seen full metal alchemist because i think i saw a poster in the backround of the gantz review
Grave of the fire flies is probably the only thing anime that's ever genuinely brought tears to my eyes. It's a real treasure, but the inuyasha movies are not. Good luck with those anyway though, despite the fact that each movie gets gradually worse and more boring and or pointless as you go on.
waiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit you said your gunna wrap up the series of mr. anime? aww man, you review reaaaaaaaly well, you should keep it up, and this is really one of the best dramas ever, i saw it when i was little, so i didn't understand it as much, i think im gunna go and re-watch it.
Nice going, consider checking out the anime Kemonozume. It's rather different, and I think it's great but others have mixed opinions. It only has 13 episodes and is only available in fansub form.
Grave of the Fireflies in my opinion is the greatest anime title of all time, I also like to watch and review animes with my friends and I saw absolutely nothing wrong with this show, It is certainly an A+ anime.
I bawled... The Aunt was a bitch.

Grave of the fire flies is probably the only thing anime that's ever genuinely brought tears to my eyes. It's a real treasure, but the inuyasha movies are not. Good luck with those anyway though, despite the fact that each movie gets gradually worse and more boring and or pointless as you go on.

I borrowed this from a friend and still haven't watched it. It sounds like Jin-Roh would be an interesting pairing with this film.
Have you seen any of Barefoot Gen? I'm interested in how similar it is to Fireflies.

Nice going, consider checking out the anime Kemonozume. It's rather different, and I think it's great but others have mixed opinions. It only has 13 episodes and is only available in fansub form.
Keep up the good work!

Grave of the Fireflies in my opinion is the greatest anime title of all time, I also like to watch and review animes with my friends and I saw absolutely nothing wrong with this show, It is certainly an A+ anime.

Just put the old intro back on, these "experiments" in FX look pretty weak.
And btw - you can hate the damn USians if you want to. Nothing wrong with hating those barbarians.
