Maybe stick pins in a straight line all the way around the sides of the sole, and use them as a guide to split the sole with a hack-saw? (Bakers use tooth-picks that way, to slice a sheet cake into thin layers.) Or maybe use a thrift-store yoga mat?
@esplanade123 HaHa. Well I suggest checking out some Vibram rubber if you have a little more money than 5 bucks, unless you just want them to wear around.
Hey, I just made the same thing this afternoon before finding your vid...! Yeah, it is possible to shave down flip flop bottoms...haven't tried them yet outside but they feel good. I carefully cut mine with a steak knife, lol. Super thin now. Also if you have a hobby lobby around you can find deer-skin cord. Very nice, and cheers!
@majtomwilson When I ran in them they worked OK. The thin paracord was a little irritating on the skin (cowhide shoelace would probably work a lot better), and as others have mentioned, they are quite thick and "absorbent". In a pinch they're fine, but if you have the money, invest in something more. Cheers
@nickfish03 who the hell goes barefoot running "in a pinch"? running is an art form and an exercise so why would i put something that "Works OK" on my feet that could possibly injure me or decrease my enjoyment of the running experience?
just thought of this, why not instead of tearing the sandals apart, you just tie the cord to one of the back rubber pieces, wrap the cord around your shin a couple times and then tie the other end back to the other side of the sandal?
Actually your idea its great (its exactly what I did three months ago, then I tried KSO Vibram five fingers and then homemade sandals with vibram plastic sole) and the cheapest one but has those problems: a) they are too thick compared with vibram plastic b) generally those sandals are made with sponge like plastic wich absorbs water and it causes oddor and they "absorb" the impact of forefront running wich I dont like but the hard feel of being almost barefoot...

@flamedrag18 i suppose you could, it might be a little more loose than if you have rope right against your skin all around though

Too thick and inflexible. Tied improperly

If the back holes are too far forward, get a bigger size and trim the sole.
