  • @doylie97 so am I! what year are you in?, what school do you go to?, whats your name cause' I may know you.

  • Banjo Patterson worked for as often as he could outside of cities which allowed him to be amongst people who were still pioneering. Their effect on him and his view of this land was profound and in turn his words had a profound effect upon the reader. I imagine my own grandfathers sitting by camp fires under stands of Jarrah and Blue gum, their own fathers reading this beautiful poem to them. Banjo revealed the true heart of our nation as it was in those days, and as it is for some still.

  • OMG, we have to do an assignment on this.

  • Same

  • nice words

  • I just watched this and I'm all welled up. Its so beautiful.

I miss my Australia so much and my silly UK dvd player wont play my MFSR dvd. grrrr.

  • Seriously, to the person who wrote "4 dislikes??? Are you gay and have your thumb DOWN because it is UP your bum?"

seriously, did you even think about what you were saying? ha

  • LOL...The Man From Snowy River was written in the 1800's for all you generation peeps out there...noone knows if Banjo Patterson based his poes on real live ppl...but it is at least one thing that is Australian culture and part of Australia as far as we know...and yes I know the poem has 14 versus!!

  • @uppanadam74 (sorry 13 versus...)

  • not a bad myth to grow up on...

  • @maggijude it aint a myth

  • @XenaGem i meant "myth" in the anthropological ir psychological sense of the word

  • @maggijude I get what you mean, but a myth has nothing to do with psychology. You mean, legend? Or poem, or tale?

  • @rachg01 "myth " is a source of inspiration for us in life in general and hard times in particular

  • @maggijude I mean from a professional/theoretical perspective, a myth has nothing to do with the field of psychology. Literature, existentialism, possibly pseudo psych, but not psych.

  • hehe i feel privileged from from corryong.. the foot of this story.... the festival that is celebrated is comming soon :)

whats even better, is my name is actually clancey :)

  • today i witnessed humans with hearts as big as the steed ...true Aussies welcome at my campfire anytime.

  • koori my arse . bloody kooris try to claim it all .could not have been a koori h e would have been to p[issed to get on a horse. the man from snowy river is credited to be Jack Riley from Corryong

  • man from snowy river was koori

  • man from snowy river was koorie

  • @lajb26 koorie, I'ma guessing that's Australian for "cool" or "awesome"?

  • @Blademaster865 A Koori is an Indigenous Australian, or Aborigine.

  • A good movie ruined by the inclusion of Kirk Douglas as the old man..... We had several Aussie actors here at that time who should have been considered for the part. It was a crass marketing ploy so the yanks would like it... as per usual.

A lot of good aussie movies are done this way.... it sucks.

  • I love these movies! I am actually walking down the aisle at my wedding to Back to the Mountains from the second movie! The poem and movie clips are so great!

  • I LOVE this movie!!! as for the horses...simply gorgeous!!!! thanks for uploading! best wishes from Pakistan!! :))

  • Slim Dusty taught me this poem :) look itup, he does it so cleverly.

  • @lellbelle ten to it daily and it sends a shiver down my spine every time!

  • makes you proud to be an Aussie

  • THIS IS ABSOLUTELY AWESOME

  • wasnt the horse worth a thousand lbs a filly in the movie? well, i guess things are changed from book and movie.

  • How wonderful to hear the poem spoken with an Australian accent then combined with footage from the movie. I so enjoyed it! I remember seeing this movie in a theater with a 70mm screen- my heart leaped seeing Jim and Denny go down the mountain!! The Man From Snowy River has some of the best images of man and his horse on film- I never tire seeing this movie! Thank you so much for this video!

  • Omg i love this video it is awsome to soooo captures australias sprit

  • the greatest story in australian history

  • Very well done!!!!!! I am an eventer and wish I had Jim's horse, he's priceless.

  • omg we have to do the poem at skool front of every 1

  • Awesome!!!!!! i love it and i wish my grade 8 teacher gave us homework to listen to this :)

  • This is one of my families favorite movies!

  • thank you so much for putting this up. Ten stars

  • A guy from work stayed at my place for a few months and could recite that poem from

beginning to end by heart. Used to give me soul shivers and goose bumps!

He recited it many times when we would have a beer or twenty.

    Excellent stuff!!!

  • @leaper1950 my late husband could also recite this one, usually after a few reds :) ... he passed away last year aged 48 and it's one of the things I miss the most - we read it as a tribute when we scattered his ashes, a very moving and very

    Australian piece.

  • I love this, thank you for the post

  • HOLY FUCK, THIS IS BEAUTIFUL.........america has nothing with which to compete....except our piles of garbage and mutation.

  • awesome

  • Haha my boss at the racing stables, When we were watching this movie after work. He said "if only our thoroughbreds could run like that all day" it was soo funny. Fantasic Poem :)

Go Australia and the Man From Snowy River.

  • Thank you for posting it. I saw both movies and I loved it! I never heard this poem before. I always thought that it was Albion Kipling, who wrote "Snowy River"(???)

  • Easily one of the best Australian poems ever written, and one of the best Australian movies ever made. Hard to believe it was made nearly 30 years ago.

  • This is glorious! First heard this poem from an Aussie friend of mine, on a ship we were working on in Northern Europe. Quality. Fantastically done with the movie clips. Must look that up.

  • I liked it better than the movie! Great vid! Growing up, all the girls in the family liked the movie because they had the hots for the fellow who played the Man From Snowy River. I must admit, being a run-of-the-mill red blooded young lad, I didn't like it as much except for the part where they catch that horse. The poem though ... I really like that poem!

  • Fantastic video! one of my favorite movies and soundtracks

  • lol Im named after jessica in this video

  • great poem my all time favourite

  • That was brilliantly done, the poetry, the movie scenes, an inspiring video.

I've loved both movies and watched both several times a year for several years (often times as many as twice a month!) The Story, music, scenery beyond breathtaking.

Thank you for putting this together!

  • it was good but by my reckoning the pauses are wrong

  • i need a bit of help? we r doing a rockestiedfor this year and our theme is about the man from snowy river theme any ieas???

  • I still have a copy on DVD and watch it from time to time and will do so for the rest of my life. I love it...the characters, script, scenery, horses.

  • Reminds me of my childhood, great memories thank you!!!

  • Absolutely wonderful, thank you for sharing!

  • My favorite poem and movie of all time. Always moves me and always brings a bit of a tear to my eye.

  • Are you going to be in Corryong at the festival this year?....i will recite against you anytime

  • Oh my dear! Thank you! I saw this movie years ago... but searched for it so much! Thanks a lot!!

  • Aw, Well done, just loved it. Bought tears to my eyes. wonderful, thankyou. Cheers Annie

  • I came searching for a reading of the poem. Happily, I found this. Also so well read by Franky too. And it is such an exciting story that Banjo tells in this poem isn't it. GOLD!

  • I have been watching this movie for years... it has always moved me. This narrated video puts all others to shame. Thank you so much for sharing this with us! Blessed Be!

  • That was simply fantastic! Well done!

Makes me proud to be an Australian!

  • AWESOME!!!

  • very interesting

  • This is one of the greatest movies ever made. It's to bad that don't make more movies of this quality. I remember in my teenage years playing some of this music on the piano. It is so moving.

  • yeah, I could never understood why this film has been grossly under-rated. It is superb. The music, the characters, the acting, the cinematography, the scenery. I think Kirk Douglas doing the two roles made people judge it harshly...but I his acting is marvelous. And the chase is one of the best in films

  • Ah, so this is what Terry Pratchett is referencing in The Last Continent

  • A stirring rendition, well done! Thankyou for posting this timeless classic.

  • Makes me cry every time.

  • Just happy I'm not the only one!

  • You mean I'm not the only one! Ya!

    :):):)

  • looking back, the movie captures the spirit of the poem quite well. thanks for posting

  • I love this, would you make it possible to download?? Please? This poem and movie changed my life as a teenager and I would love to have this on my ipod for those times when you need a pick me up.

  • I second that. And I know what you mean by changing your life too. When I was little I was diagnosed with ADHD and sometimes would "act up." When I did, my mom would always say, "Would Jim act like/say that?"

  • Not Jim...Jack Riley...buried in Corryong NE Victoria...worth the trip to check the terrain and conditions, The Man fromSnowy River Festival is a yearly event....around Easter if I remember correctly

  • Seeing Tom burlinson on horseback!!! Oh, YES!!!

  • wow, Great job in this! This is one of my favorite movies, And this poem was awesome.

  • Can anyone tell me the story of 'Clancy of the Overflow'?

  • I feel very proud & honoured to own a beautiful Australian Stock Horse and to come from such an amazing country.

    Aussie, Aussie, Aussie!

    Oi oi oi!

  • aus pride

  • I had a super crush on "The Man From Snowy River" as a teen & I also love buckskin & dun horse......over 20 years later & I still think he & his horse are perfect specimens of their kind!

  • i second that comment though i wesnt a teen...

  • God i love my country :)

  • Possibly the greatest clip on YOUTUBE

  • The best movie in the world!!!!

  • This is excellent, so beautifully done. Keep up the good work.

  • I get what you mean Mick, but still, a great movie...and bein' the 'mer'can that I am, I never would'a heard Banjo's poem if it weren't for this "Western". So, I raise my pint to you, sir, and to all of our ancestors. They Know Who They Are!!!

  • don't think the film does the poem justice. they should have called it the boy from melbourne grammar.

  • Incredible poem and beautiful movie. They just don't make movies as good as this one anymore.

  • Great combination of the poem and movie scenes. I would love to use this in an Australian Identity lesson I have next week with year 8 students. How can I access this to have in the classroom that does not support internet access? Any suggestions greatly accepted.

  • Make it an assignment for the kids to watch at home and then have some questions for them on the next day....what do you think?

  • Thanks for the suggestion. I have actually found it on the feature section of the DVD movie. The year 9 students loved the Visuals and by the end gave comments of 'Awesome" etc. so a great learning aid for Australian culture and storytelling.

  • @petervee60 Hi, I love this video, I am a teacher and want to show this to my students for our poem unit. However, you tune is blocked at our school. Is there another way to view it?

  • I only wish that the 'Man from Snowy River' was still a household name...

  • like how long is this ballad

  • WOW!!! Love this. Its great. Thanks!!!

  • Is this Frankie J Holden..?? Awesome!!

  • have loved this poem since i first heard when i was 9. I enjoyed this reading too :)

  • thanks for the great poem!

  • It kills me that, as much as we adore this story, it'll never be the same again. Technology has superseeded the horse. We hang on to these stories, they make us feel proud to be Aussies, but, sadly, who knows how to do the stuff that Banjo talks about anymore?

  • Very true, verticalsmurf. It's not only technology, it's these wretched 'health and safety' regulations and the dastardly litigation culture and the consequent insurance requirements, which also prevent anybody from even learning how to do this stuff properly any more. What a shame.

  • To me, the problem isn't insurance or OH&S, it is that these stories aren't taught in schools.

My memory of being taught Australian history in school 15 years ago was, the first fleet and the reason behind it, Ned Kelly, and our participation in the two world wars. That was it.

These days, to me at least, society seems to be so afraid our own non-PC past, that we just don't talk about it. I encounter so many new Australians, they are interested in passing on their own knowledge - continued -

  • and most are curious about our history. But who these days could point them towards Banjo Patterson, Sidney Nolan, Arthur Streeton, The Shiralee, Slim Dusty, The Man from Snowy River, and our other legends? Why are we afraid to tell these stories? This history is what made our diggers! And that history is what made them legends. This sort of teaching seems to be lost now. Hands up any Aussie who knows how to crack a whip, ride a horse or shear a sheep? New Aussies are welcome to respond!

  • I love Australia as you are describing it. With the Man from the Snowy River, horses, cattle work and the whip crack. Unfortunately I had to leave that land but I belong to it from my hart and one day I'll go back.

This video is in my top five

  • Comment removed

  • i can crack a whip, ride a horse and shear a sheep, i can also draft and muster cattle and im 14. so there you go some Aussies still know that sort of thing.

  • Cheers, keep it up!

  • if i ever make it down under can you teach me...please.

  • Absolutley brilliant! A perfect tribute to an amazing film and poem! Brings tears to my eyes!!!

  • As of matter of fact, i've got it now.

Teachers from yonder land. Have persistence in finding your goal or gaol. :P GLHF

  • what a ripper.

  • I teach in Prague - Czech Republic. I have used this in the classroom but would like to get a copy with higher definition for Australia Day. I have added subtitles and it is my dream to have my graduating high school class read it, with the film running in the background, on the stage on Australia Day. It pixleates on a large screen. Can you make a higher definition version available to me - I am happy to pay. Wayne - Prague

  • I must say it was a bit annoying having to buy this movie on DVD from the U.S. originally as it wasn't available in Aus some years ago.

Reading the reviews referring to it as a cowboy and western movie was just as sad.

This video of the poem is part of the Australian edition of DVD release for those chasing it and is well done.

I had to laugh at a mate of mine after first hearing the poem commented how closely it followed the film.

  • why did u buy it from the US? you can buy it here anyway. I got mine from here.

  • I bought the DVD from the USofA because, at the time, it wasn't available in Australia.

  • Brilliant! I love the movie but my favorite souvenier of Australia is a book of Banjo Patterson's poems. My favorite is actually "Pardon, the Son of Reprieve" but this was great!

  • OMG! Fab! It brings back lovely memories of my rides w/several of the guides who were in both films! Merrijig is the area of filming. Sadly, Craig's hut was lost in wildfires I'm told. The reading of the poem along with the film clips is well done! I think the new movie "Australia" will bring a resurgence of tourists to the area again! Wish I could relive this magical experience again!

  • Parts shot on farm at Bulla, love the video but the poem is what makes it all.

  • i saw this in school

  • FJ Holden ROCKS, but he drives a Ford...

  • thank you for posting this on here its my favourite of all time !

  • Is that Franky J Holden reading the poem?

  • It certainly is! And what a great job he did. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

  • If you have a look at 9:12 you'll see FJ's name right there. And hasn't his voice aged well ... like a good FJ should!

  • I love this movie and this poem was great! I've always wanted a horse and this year I'm finally buying one and naming him Clancy!

  • This is going in my English exam today for the HSC. I'm contrasting Henry Lawson and AB Paterson

  • Fantastic Video. I love Australia. I wish we still lived in times just like this; the people, music, and lifestyles were way better.

  • thank you for sharing, I just watched the movie for the upteenth time and was curious about the poem. glad I found this video, it really helped bring to light the beautiful words.

  • Superb post - my favorite Australian poet, I can hear a teacher at high school teaching the class poetry, her taught us the Patterson poem "Lost" Great work mate.

  • Thanks for your comment GenericGene. If your into Banjo's works, check out one of his others, 'The Man From Iron Bark'. Its a good'n.

  • You did a great job of editing this piece. It is exciting to watch~ I loved the movie but this condenses the best parts!

  • I loved this movie and The man From Snowy River II.

  • EXCELLENT!!!!

  • VERY well done video....

  • I know this off by heart...

  • True Blue

  • I was glad to find a reading of this poem online! I've been wanting to hear it for a while now. This is my favorite movie, and now I think this is one of my favorite poems.

Both this, and the movie really make me want to visit Australia.

  • Haven't heard this poem in years! My 4-H horse club here in Texas used it for our "Share the Fun" skit around 1995. Still brings a tear to the eye. Thanks for posting!

  • perhaps the greatest movie ever made in Australia
