He was a pathetic, weak-voiced sellout of a lyric tenor. He showed some vague amount of promise back when he started, but he quickly devolved into a thin and dull sound.
He's a tenor that's been booed off dozens of stages, attesting to his fecklessness.
May he rest in peace, but his career is not laudable. He's ruined many other's careers with his insecurity.
@heb1114 "The public" barely knows he exists, "The critics" are all either Americans or people he's sucked up to, and people considered him the successor to Pavarotti because they're full of it.
Your "talented, bright star" was a hasbeen in the end with people in the right places. The only gift this guys had was luck.
As if I could be envious of one who didn't strive to improve and thus became complacent.
In any case, stop bothering me with your inconsequential opinion.
@heb1114 Likewise, I don't care about your opinion. I am not sorry at all for what I have stated because you have shown you have nothing to offer but disdain for my cynical view of this now dead overrated lyric tenor.
@MerlinsJester e @heb1114:I think this kind of discussion comtribuiu nothing in their lives. Dispute the quality vocal Salvatore Licitra now, after his brief but stunning career, is rather clumsy. Salvatore Licitra had a great voice quality, a tenor voice a little sweeter and that madePavarotti and dislikes as well as many others as well, without ever removing them shine of a life dedicated to music. May God give you a place in the Heavenly Choir.
@IranBarroso His voice was uneven and flat with an imposed quality; there was nothing "sweet" about the man's voice. His approach to music was hollow and saccharine, which I find repulsive.
@MerlinsJester you are right his voice wasnt great but the people who pick the tenors to sing at the great opera houses of the world are surely at fault not the singers? after all if a footballer is playing for parma and is asked to play for madrid is it his fault if he says yes?
@gerry4339 True, but Licitre is at fault for stonewalling other tenors from entering the business continually. His terrible voice just makes it all the more painful
Signore MerlinsJester.
His style was to sing with ease, not to force the voice as so many of our great tenors have done in the past, and maaany, wreck their voices in the process.
If you are a singer from his generation, are you... going to sing louder than Del Monaco, brighter than Pavarotti, higher than Gedda... How far can you go?
So, you go the other way... Softer than Del Monaco, warmer than Pavarotti, lower than Gedda. It's OK. More relaxing.

Despite his inconsistencies I still like him. I wish he would apply on all sections the intensity he does in the beautiful, arching passages...yet still...for the beauty, I keep on liking him.
who does his vocal sound remind you of? He placed that B flat very nicely at the end -- I haven't heard that much of him but he stays on pitch, his tone his rich - and the voice sounds like it has more than ample power-- [after he sings Tosca on the B flat and pauses before the sei tu] you get an indication of the carrying power in the auditorium]- All in all many seem overly harsh on this gentleman.

Sadly I cannot say the same for poor Mr. Licitra. DRSYNSCARECROW is spot on.
It shall forever remain a mystery why this man was ever pervceived to be able to sing in the great opera houses of the world.
There are a hundred thousand principal and AMATEUR tenors, all over the globe, shaking their heads in disbelief that this man takes precedence over them. The present may be unanswerable, but the future will quickly forget this Italian.
I agree with you for the most part, but once and a while he's able to pull off some beautiful singing. However, he is remarkably inconsistent. This posted video isn't him at his worst, but certainly not his best, either. One point of contention though: he's Swiss.
Maybe they are americans. If someone is born in Switzerland does not him automatically Swiss. Licitra is the son of Italian parents and he is Italian.
Come on guys - he was born in Bern of ITALIAN parents. His family believe he was ITALIAN, he presented himself as ITALIAN. Don't carp over an accident of birth!
It's NOT a point of contention at all. He WAS born in Switzerland, to Italian Parents. He was raised in Italy. He IS Italian. His Biography states he is Italian.

It was a point of contention with DRSYNSCARECROW's original post, because he called him Italian.

He is more like shame of Italy or shame of Sicily. I can't understand how he managed to appear at the Met this season.
