The Ancient Greeks were amazing, 10,000 leaderless Greeks in the middle of Iraq surrounded by bitter enemies and even more inhospitable terrain bent upon their destruction. Yet be genius, determination and a love of freedom and hate for slavery they battled their way through the Persian Empire to secure their liberty. These mercenaries became heroes for their valour, sheer gall and candour.
They found the "Democracy", an UTOPIC, FALSE system of governing, with a "supposed" free speach to everybody but actually, ONLY THE POWERFUL ARISTOCRATIC FAMILIES had the power and the rule of the city! Also, they were care ONLY FOR Athens and they treated the rest "Allies" of them like their protectorates, like their servants! They TOOK (STOLEN) the Alliance's money to build Parthenon for the glory of... ATHENS! GOT IT, now? Read some books first, before you open your mouth or write something!
My friend you are wrong demcoracy wasnt an Utopic False system of governing as you say. Every decision was taken by the people of athens. That's why if you ever read the Helen by Euripides for example you can easily see the anti-war messages of it cause Helen was written in 412(middle of the peloponnesean war)In a non-democratical state Euripides wouldn't be able to express its opinion and make such great work. That's why people from every corner of greece went to athens because there they were
able to develop and express their ideas and opinions in a peacful and democratic enviroment that allowed them to make wonderful works for example just think could Sokrates or Plato made their wonderful works in a non-democratical state?Of course not, but its true what you said about the Athenian Aliance but every desicion were take by vote of the people of athens, but we should not forget that Athens protected and helped the other greek cities in the war against persia.
I can't say democracy is that great of a system, but it is good for elections of leaders and representatives. In the end though you must remember Athens was only democratic for elections and ostracism, the rest of the time it was the leaders who made the decisions. For a government to function properly you need representatives, otherwise you have the anarchy of pure democracy(to be frank pure democracy IS anarchy). Look at what the free market democracy did to Russia. Just making a point.
They HAD TO BE warriors, for their survive! ONLY THEIR slaves (Helotes), were at least 10 times more than the whole population; and in their BEST times, the WHOLE Lacedaimonian army was 10.000 men ("Panstratia" - FullArmy), but they NEVER marched all, except the Battle of Plataea... Also, IF YOU TRY to read, Lacedaimonia society was the FIRST SOCIALIST in History! NOT MY words, CARL MARX's words!!! And about your favorite Athenians? There were a FASCIST, TYRANNICAL, CRUEL society for the others!
Obviously, "sorrypapawxz", you probably read a paragraph in a magazine for Ancient Greece and you know "THAT MUCH" of it, as I know about Rocket science!!!
You're TOTALY WRONG! TOTALY! Spartans - actually, "LACEDAIMONIANS" not Spartans! - were NOT "animals"! How much uncultivated you are and STILL, you writting about something you DON'T KNOW! Lacedaimonias HAD TO "become" a military City-State; there were only about 30.000 souls to rule an area (Peloponnesos) with at least 500.000 people!!!
The Spartans were nothing but pure animals. Still you euro-centric nationalist try to portait Spartans as something very beautiful and great. The Spartans hated democracy and they forced 7 year old boys to learn how to fight and made them soldiers at age 7. The Athenians were much better people, they loved democracy and were never interested in war.
Sparta had much more enemies than Athens.Thts why her city state was a pure milirarist form. Spartan were realy good on a battlefield cuz they were training for war every single day...thts why they survive in the wild Peloponissos. There were nothing tht can stand infrond tht killing machine tht called Spartan Phalanx. They never attack any1 they were defed them selves. dont judge history from hollywood movies like 300
@sorrypapawxz OK for what you said for the Spartans, however the Athenians were everything but peace-loving...The Athenian wiped entire poleis out...Thucydides shows how they hid behind words like "democracy" or "freedom"...
Those words had the same meaning in their mouths as the words "libertas" or "humanitas" for the Romans...
The spartans had to live this way. The most spartiatan living at the same time was about 9500. And there were about 100000 helot and 30000 perioikos. They had to show strenght also inside the state, as well as to the other states. Nothing happens without a cause, this circumstance made them to be a military state.
@sorrypapawxz .. thats not exactly true. xenophon himself was born in athens.. exiled from there later, but returned home to die there. you really believe a city-state could of lasted in the old world without being able to fight a war? the spartans did take it to the extreme, and i am not defending them, but sadly they were human.. not animals.
Actually it's said nowhere that Xenophon returned to home after his exile. But it's very much possible because his son died during a battle in which he fought for Athens. Just an assumption.
Xenophon was someone who wanted Athens to stop making wars and live in peace by the way. Read his book "On revenues".
@sorrypapawxz they were never interested in war????? you should know your history before you talk any more crap. The reason the spartans won the war is because almost all greek cities were sick of athenian empire's rule, an emire they forged only through war and treason.
