argh, i have a problem! i have just built myself my first PC, i've put in a 120gb OCZ vertex 3 SSD and a 2tb WD caviar HDD and while i was able to detect both drives in device manager and both claim to be working properly, the Caviar doesn't show up in My Computer or windows explorer at all, so there is no way i can access it for storage. I've set it up in IDE mode as the asus bios instructions instruct, any protips?
here's the tl/dr: how do i make a hard drive appear in windows explorer?
@BrEnNo1023 IDE mode? That's not right... Should be in SATA. IDE is the name for the interface used in older drives (aka PATA). It IS using a SATA connection, right?
@TheAssailant6661 lawl, i found out the problem. had to right click my computer and select 'manage' and run the drive wizard (assigned it a number etc) in the disk manager.
@myamericanpie The only skills you need is knowing what parts are compatible with each other and how to put it all together without damaging your $1000 investment.
@AsbjornOlling Haha fail. But yeah, at the time I made this video I was obsessed with Mirror's Edge, so it was only natural to include my favorite remix off the CD (that is, the one that came with the PC version).
hi my name is George, i realy like this video, i love computers i always changing parts and fixing them , but now i want to go a little farer, and build one, i got one question for you, the computer cases are universal ? i have a DELL 2400 insp, i want to put the motherboard into the new case, will fit? the conection on back will fit on the holes in the back of the case?... please email me to jorgemartinobaloo@hotmail.com.. thanks a lot......
@baloo217 new retail motherboards come with an I/O panel shield that you should be able to swap out of the old computer. As long as the motherboard matches the case's form factor (typically ATX) then you're good to go. One note, not every case is big enough to handle the really big graphics cards. I've seen a couple of people run into the issue of their cards not fitting in a case, but other than that you should be fine.
Btw, for everyone watching this video- make *SURE* to wear anti-static gloves (any form of rubber will do) when building a custom PC. Any static charge from your fingers can cause one of the components to short circuit; don't want that do we?
@bnynn For the record I was bare footed on ceramic tile, and as we all know ceramic is a terrible conductor. As long as you know how electricity works, you shouldn't worry too much about static short circuiting your computer. Now, if I was on a carpet wearing socks or sneakers, that's a whole other story.
@ienjoicomics101 I spent around $630 USD with taxes and shipping. This was back in 2008 so don't expect this to be either accurate pricing or a good build for running modern games.
@TheAssailant6661 no no no no no im sorry... I really didnt mean to be offensive, I was making a slightly sarcastic reply to chunkiechub's comment. I really commend you on this PC you built, and overall its an exelent video.
@psnatvman14 That is the ASUS M2R32-MVP, and is fairly outdated by now. It didn't come with a CPU or fan, I had to buy that separately. The CPU did come with the fan, but only because it was a Retail version. OEM versions don't come with fans.
TheAssailant, can i just say, thank you,id shake your hand,. this helped me alot, ty man, im about to build a brand new pc, i never made one before but i know most things about pcs, and now you just helped me even more, by the way you should have worn Anti Static Wrist Strap Discharge :/ or are they really not needed as much anymore ? anyway thanks again and good luck
As for the Anti-static strap, I was bare foot on ceramic tile with a normal shirt and basketball shorts (if I remember correctly), which to my knowledge doesn't create a static charge. However, I do strongly urge beginners to use one. I've had experience around sensitive electronic motherboards before so I knew every basic precaution to prevent a static build-up in my body. I also made sure I grounded myself on the PC case (tho not too sure if that does anything).
@TheAssailant6661 hmm i see, i never actually thought about the clothes, but i do think i got stuff that would be ok, also is it true your should do it on a wooden table of or something very similar ?, and stand up most of the time when making the pc ?i need to read up on this, i spent 850 - 950 euro on parts, that's about 1100-1250 $, last thing i want is to break it before it works lol
heyy man i just started to have the intrest in building my own gaming comp....but i know nothing about comps! :( But can you suggest what i parts i shuld buy plz??!
@Darkarthz1 Take an advice from me if you need any further help you can ask me i know lots of stuff, if you don't know much, you can make wrong choices...
Aren't you also suppose to use some Thermal Paste? I thought you are usually suppose to apply that to the CPU. If you don't have to, which it doesn't look like it, then this doesn't look too hard at all. The motherboard and CPU would be my only concern as I would be worried that the motherboard would crack after tightning screws or something would happen to the processor...then you would be out of 2-300 dollars right there...
@IIIITreyIIII You don't need one if you're very careful. Also, I don't have money to spend on anti-static straps. The anti-static wrapping is good enough for me.
I used the thermal paste pre-applied by the factory on the stock fan. If you're using 3rd party or after market CPU fans, get some thermal paste for it.
How long did this take you? And how much did it cost? I think it would be really fun to build a computer but I really don't have the money or have any idea on what motherboard and other stuff I would get to build it. If i was gonna build a gaming computer what graphics card would you recommend if I was gonna play games like crysis on maximum settings?
@DarkAffliction if you were gonna try to run crysis on maximum settings I would want to buy at least an ati 5870, maybe a 5970 depending on your resolution. Honestly though high graphics are enough for crysis and you could get those settings with an ati 5770 (I own one of those) or a 5850.
You kidding me? My friend maxed out Crysis at Very High with a 4870 Single. He was playing with 8x AA and didn't even notice a thing (then again, he was using a CRT monitor that had a max of about 1200x900 (obviously not that exact amount, but close to it as I can't remember the exact, but it was 4:3).
Of course, if you want a higher frame rate, go for something like 4890 or the new 5000 series.
i'm assuming he wants at least 30fps and is running it on at least a 1440x900. Also Don't go with a 4890, because it can't run DX11 so if you were planning on getting crysis 2 then you won't be able to run it as well.
as long as the form factor matches the motherboard you can use any case, some event support multiple form factors like mine (ATX, microATX etc). Although I don't think Alienware sells just cases, I think you have to buy one of their computers to get a case and if that's the point no reason to build yourself.
I recommend going with a nice CoolerMaster case. CoolerMaster is probably the best case brand when it comes to custom -build-it-yourself computers.
i want to build one but how hard is it to install windows, driver and also how hard is it for cable management? im not trying to get mean or hateful comments this would be my first build and i dont want to screw anything up.
@dragonsrage08 Windows installation is very straightforward if you know what you're doing. Maybe I'll make a video/ blog post on how to install/dual-boot Windows
The graphics cards come with drivers, but the latest drivers can be found on the ATI or nVidia website, depending on which brand you bought.
Cable management is also easy. Just group wires together and away from vents and fans for maximum airflow.
right you no when your placing the cpu system in arent you supposed to rub some of that heat proof gell on the top of it? or is that just if u want too?
Retail CPUs have Thermal Paste pre-applied to the included Heat sink. If you have an OEM CPU, or a different heatsink from the CPU included one, you'll need do apply a dot sized amount of thermal paste and then spread it around on the CPU with a card, or something similar. DO NOT USE YOUR FINGERS.
Well I dont know why you built in the PSU first, because if you do that you have to fuck around with the cables the whole time. I say: first the DVD and HDD(s), then you get the Mainboard ready (install RAM, CPU, Cooler), then build in the mainboard. After that you connect all things with the Mainboard, THEN you install the PSU and connects it to all things, so you have enough place until the very end. And last you install all cards (graphics card[s], soundcard etc)
Meh, doesn't really matter. I saw a vid from... site name escapes me...that also installed the PSu first, while others install Drives first. However, sometimes getting the cables to the drives is a pain in the ass so putting the PSU in before the drives would be easier, depending on how much space you have in the case.
@bizzy400 Get AMD phenom 2 Generation or over Intel suck ball and they are to expensive...My amd phenom x4 940 3ghz idle att 30 degrees and fully prime95 loads att 35 degrees solid lol no wather cooling hahaha
Is the processor Quad or Duo Core? Ethier is pretty good thats a good gaming comp but the Graphics card should be 9600GT 1GB + for some serious gaming
I used to have many AMD's just dint like Ati cards but my pcs would ocasionaly freeze since i went intell that problem got solved for me. otherwise there about the same for casual gaming
Replacing the motherboard on an eMachines no longer makes it an eMachines. Might as well just build your own and buy a new case. I still have my old eMachines along with my new computer I built.
meh..I'm not gonna play Crysis anyway. I'm playing Aion and setting it to max graph.. I'm still waiting for OBT so I could check my FPS. I tried CBT and my FPS is good :P I guess 1.6k is kinda much.. can you guys help me make a Gaming rig with that 700 bucks? sounds cheap.
What the... you spend 600 on a gaming rig while I spent 1.6k! I thought you can't make gaming rigs with a budget lower than 800 bucks. (tax not included)
Whoever told you that lied to you. My friend built a gaming PC for 1k that can play Crysis at the highest settings with 6X AA and not much noticable slowdown.
The problem here is the part manufacturers. Intel chips are significantly more expensive than AMD chips and nVidia cards are more expensive than ATI cards. AMD chips can outperform Intel in raw power, and ATI is dollar for dollar a better than nVidia cards.
To be honest my $35 card can only do low. Will replace later with better card
my pc was 800 bucks with a gfx 295 I7 3ghz 12g of ram and Nforce 7 quad sli ready mobo 1200 psu and a thermake case no monitor tho then 400 extra on the second gfx 295 im using a mitsubishi 120mhx 72 inch hdmi for a monitor but my pc runs practicaly anything out there at 200 fps maxed settings
where did you buy your i7... a 3ghz cost almost $600 alone
btw my setup is the i7 2.66 (OC at 3.0) double SLI on a XFX black 260 216 (planning on getting a 3rd soon) 8 gigs of ram (any more gets too much DR imo) i have a Asus x58 triple SLI mother board... and i dont have a standard monitor... i use my 42 inch gaming TV with a HDMI cable (i have the same 72 inch mitsubishi as you for watching movies and stuff not games) all that (other then the TV's) cost me about 1.2k
bought it at comp usa PR its OEM 3ghz and used the employee discount was around 295, ram was around 120 for all 12 and 1st video card was 180 bucks cause i handed in a 280 gfx.
B) The rigs you're talking about are either subsidized or doesn't exist as there was just one $700 rig that could run Crysis Warhead at High settings last year.
When did you build this computer? How much did you spend on it? What were all of your components? Sorry for all the questions but I have the same tower and am not sure what to fill it with.
Built this rig last Summer as soon as school ended. It cost me around $530 USD but the taxes and shipping rasied it to almost $600. For the parts, just look in the tags of this video.
The Mirror's Edge Remix CD comes with the PC version of the game (so basically I paid 40 bucks for the actual game cuz the whole thing was 50, which is usually the highest price for PC games, and they can do SUPER HIGH DEFINITION! aka past 1080p)

TheHughDixon 2 years ago
Retail CPUs have Thermal Paste pre-applied to the included Heat sink. If you have an OEM CPU, or a different heatsink from the CPU included one, you'll need do apply a dot sized amount of thermal paste and then spread it around on the CPU with a card, or something similar. DO NOT USE YOUR FINGERS.

Thanks. You can get the Remix CD whenever you buy Mirror's Edge for PC. It comes as its own disc inside the game case.

DFzwo 2 years ago
Meh, doesn't really matter. I saw a vid from... site name escapes me...that also installed the PSu first, while others install Drives first. However, sometimes getting the cables to the drives is a pain in the ass so putting the PSU in before the drives would be easier, depending on how much space you have in the case.

drakeb 2 years ago
Check the description.
TheAssailant6661 2 years ago
is this a good spec
2.93 ghz
9400gt 1 gig
4 gig ram
wexfordboi 2 years ago
Is the processor Quad or Duo Core? Ethier is pretty good thats a good gaming comp but the Graphics card should be 9600GT 1GB + for some serious gaming
WhatsMyGT 2 years ago
duo core
wexfordboi 2 years ago
the cpu is good, but you should buy a Sapphire HD 4870 toxic, ´cause you will get much more fps in crysis or farcry
TheEricCartmenez 2 years ago
If anyone can wait a bit I'd say wait for the 5870 with DX11 support.
TheAssailant6661 2 years ago
Way too pricy new. 5850's good enough without completely raping your wallet.
ninjagod1337 2 years ago
i say 1 on ebay 3.xx processor 1TB memory 40gb RAM
Pierules123 2 years ago
I used to have many AMD's just dint like Ati cards but my pcs would ocasionaly freeze since i went intell that problem got solved for me. otherwise there about the same for casual gaming

Can I make my eMachines PC a gaming computer by replacing some stuff, like Power Supply, motherboard?
humbert0acevedo 2 years ago
Replacing the motherboard on an eMachines no longer makes it an eMachines. Might as well just build your own and buy a new case. I still have my old eMachines along with my new computer I built.

Tailsxcosmo2122 2 years ago
how much
wexfordboi 2 years ago
about $600 with taxes and shipping
TheAssailant6661 2 years ago
could you give me a link to the parts
wexfordboi 2 years ago
meh..I'm not gonna play Crysis anyway. I'm playing Aion and setting it to max graph.. I'm still waiting for OBT so I could check my FPS. I tried CBT and my FPS is good :P I guess 1.6k is kinda much.. can you guys help me make a Gaming rig with that 700 bucks? sounds cheap.
johnkx 2 years ago
What the... you spend 600 on a gaming rig while I spent 1.6k! I thought you can't make gaming rigs with a budget lower than 800 bucks. (tax not included)
johnkx 2 years ago
Whoever told you that lied to you. My friend built a gaming PC for 1k that can play Crysis at the highest settings with 6X AA and not much noticable slowdown.
The problem here is the part manufacturers. Intel chips are significantly more expensive than AMD chips and nVidia cards are more expensive than ATI cards. AMD chips can outperform Intel in raw power, and ATI is dollar for dollar a better than nVidia cards.
To be honest my $35 card can only do low. Will replace later with better card
TheAssailant6661 2 years ago
wuat? I spend like a freaking 1.6k to make a gaming rig.. -.-
johnkx 2 years ago
Tell me the specs and when exactly you made/bought it.
TheAssailant6661 2 years ago
i just spent 1.2k on a great gaming comp... lol what did you buy a pre-made comp?
brownshoeT2 2 years ago
my pc was 800 bucks with a gfx 295 I7 3ghz 12g of ram and Nforce 7 quad sli ready mobo 1200 psu and a thermake case no monitor tho then 400 extra on the second gfx 295 im using a mitsubishi 120mhx 72 inch hdmi for a monitor but my pc runs practicaly anything out there at 200 fps maxed settings

brownshoeT2 2 years ago
where did you buy your i7... a 3ghz cost almost $600 alone
btw my setup is the i7 2.66 (OC at 3.0) double SLI on a XFX black 260 216 (planning on getting a 3rd soon) 8 gigs of ram (any more gets too much DR imo) i have a Asus x58 triple SLI mother board... and i dont have a standard monitor... i use my 42 inch gaming TV with a HDMI cable (i have the same 72 inch mitsubishi as you for watching movies and stuff not games) all that (other then the TV's) cost me about 1.2k
brownshoeT2 2 years ago
bought it at comp usa PR its OEM 3ghz and used the employee discount was around 295, ram was around 120 for all 12 and 1st video card was 180 bucks cause i handed in a 280 gfx.
damedus 2 years ago
lol... you get a shit ton off from employee discount then thats why you could build that comp so cheap
brownshoeT2 2 years ago
18% discount its just it was a OEM so it was like 350 retail
damedus 2 years ago
I think u r a serious noobie, there r $500 rigs that can run crysis @ 40fps (high settings), duh...
abubakr1205 2 years ago
A) This rig is a year old.
B) The rigs you're talking about are either subsidized or doesn't exist as there was just one $700 rig that could run Crysis Warhead at High settings last year.
TheAssailant6661 2 years ago
When did you build this computer? How much did you spend on it? What were all of your components? Sorry for all the questions but I have the same tower and am not sure what to fill it with.
dvall709 2 years ago
Built this rig last Summer as soon as school ended. It cost me around $530 USD but the taxes and shipping rasied it to almost $600. For the parts, just look in the tags of this video.

The Mirror's Edge Remix CD comes with the PC version of the game (so basically I paid 40 bucks for the actual game cuz the whole thing was 50, which is usually the highest price for PC games, and they can do SUPER HIGH DEFINITION! aka past 1080p)
