  • my husbands in fishbone, i've heard this song for over 20 years and you are doin it dude! keep it up ! ...and thank your wife 4 keepin on yr ass about it! yahooO!

  • RIP dude

  • Wicked hot!!

  • Holy shit.

  • Amazing.... and on a Rick

  • amazing keep the good work

  • I think this should make people appreciate even more how bad ass Norwood Fisher is! Great job, amazing work!

  • don't know if one of the comments mentioned it, but someone posted this on Norwood's Facebook page. nice work, man. rippin-ass tune and such a sick bassline...

  • Hopefully YT will never take this down - still thinking 'bout you Rob

  • Not perfect, but certainly better than I could do!

  • awesome dude. mad props

  • nice job my bass playing brother

  • haha, man you looked like you were gonna die playing that! been thinking of attempting this one for a few days, you have just completely put me off. 11/10 for effort dude :D

  • First time (and hopefully last) I've ever seen anyone play bass while sitting cross legged. Akward. Good job, though.

  • Dude That Kicks ASS. Awesome!!!

  • pretty close

  • If I could play this I'd never leave the house. Nice job.

  • damn bro how often do you get laid with your skills,

  • very good bro.....

  • Dude!! its awsome!! you play fucking great that bass man, respects from Colombia..... que chimba de video!! muy asperoooo!!!

  • For me this is still Rob's best work and he did a ton of awesome work on YT. RIP, you're a loss to music the world over

  • She's got great taste!good job mon!!!

  • ahh.. the notorious ric sound hah.

  • Mate this isn't spot on but it's 10 times than I'll ever be able to play it. I reckon your timing would be better if you stood up and and killed it. nice one.

  • incredible!

  • respect!

  • I found you while looking for my beloved Primus, but this jam quickly became my fav Zodiak vid. You were very bold when you'd step outside your core interests & I really enjoyed listening to you cover the Cherry Poppin Daddies, Police and more.

You will be missed Rob, thanks for the memories and no matter where you are man, ROCK ON!!! ww

P.S. Norwood still kills it, I saw Da Bone in Dec '08 in Pomona and the crowd was small, but very enthusiastic w/ mosh pit 'n' lotsa crowd surfing as usual.

  • めちゃめちゃ。。。

  • What I really loved about your performance is that you made it your own. To me personally, that is more important than to play the song 100% accurate as it appears on the record. You added your own soul and flavor. Congratulations!

  • Thanks, man. There is no way I can be Norwood, so it suffices to just be me and try to let it all hang out.

  • well done! very few real mistakes and the improv was primo. 5 stars!

  • Comment removed

  • Wow bro.. Well done.. Funk me!! And you are right, hard ass stuff..

  • Funky BASS!

  • Major props, man O_O

  • not bad, dude! ain't Norwood a monster? never seen a Rickenbacker [sp?] slapped on before ~ great sound. great ending:^D

  • YOZA!!!

    Great work Zodiak!

I gotta say, you did this two years ago, I bet you could do better now. I mean sure you flubbed up on this a little bit (still spectacular work) but I am counting on it. Try another Fishbone track. Like Ma and Pa or Sunless saturday, they both have outrageous bass I think.

Im not makin a request! just a suggestion lol I know you dont do them.....except from your wife.....witch isnt really a request.....

    Anyways THINK ABOUT IT!

    Peace & Oi!

  • I'm fairly certain I could do a better job, now (probably that is true for a lot of vids). Two years ago I was still trying to get my groove back (hadn't played much for years until I discovered youtube), and I certainly did not have a good slap bass like the Schecter.

Anyways, I will think about it for sure.

  • Yeah, it's a difficult line to play but never forget that everyone plays differently. I probably couldn't play it perfectly either (and i've been playing bass guitar for over 20 years) but i have chops in my repertoire that nobody else could play!

My point? Don't try and copy (or sound like) anyone else; just develop your own style, be true to yourself and then no-one can compare ya 'cause we all play DIFFERENTLY!

  • word....

  • Pretty sweet.. Good job, dont let the non playing nay sayers git you down... thats a really hard song to play and you go 99% of it.. Awesome!!

  • naman, close but no cigar, especially on those middle parts

  • Not the kind of song you expect the average Youtube guy to attempt. Nice job, zodiak.

  • This is a good way of illustrating just how crazy this song is. Zodiakironfist, a skilled amateur who has nailed many a song in his vids, is clearly straining to keep up... then you click on a live Fishbone clip where they're playing it almost twice as fast as the album version, and Norwood's adding in all these little improvisational bits all over the place, and hardly looks like he's breaking a sweat.

  • Yes, I am clearly no Norwood. I would not have even done this tune if my wife didn't put me up to it. she's good at pushing me.

Pros like Norwood...I could not hold a candle to.

  • fuck man that was awesome, really impressive playing! congrats!

  • holy crap dude!! u rock man...keep making videos, i really enjoy them.

  • Funky Ass Bass!

I'm just learning how to play and I can't see myself ever being able to do that. You tore it up, man. That was great!

p.s. It was funny to hear the audio preview say funky ass bass. HAHA!

  • dude if you practice easy songs by yourself almost every day and start to challenge yourself you can be pretty decent in about half a year

  • cool, but i was looking for the freeway killer haha

  • DUDE I love FISHBONE!!! I wish I could learn some of the material so we could do a cover... great rendition by the way!

  • man whenever I need to show my friends that the bass can still be used to make someones jaw drop to the floor I always turn this song on...having this video to give the visual experience really helps drive the message home...you are epitomizing the funky bass! keep it up! MOOOOOOOOOOORE!!!!

  • Great job, Love the Rick

  • that was AWESOME... thats a hard tune fast bass

  • Nice one brotha!!

    Keep it FUNKY!!

    ONE LOVE

  • Daaaaaaaaamn! That was sweet! One of my new favs.

  • Nice Job!

  • one of my favorite songs by one of my favorite bands. you nailed it! I love that you improvised the solo instead of doing a note-for-note repeat. A solo should reflect the artist's own style. Great skills. you're on my "favorites" list now.

  • So great!!!!! Cant believe you did this on a Rickenbacker...mind boggling!

  • Beaaaaautiful....

  • *jaw drops on floor*

    good job, that was awesome

  • absolutely amazing! please tell your wife thanks for asking you to do this...you ROCK!

  • you play that on a Rick; wow, THAT'S insane!

  • outstanding...

  • nice job. hardass song, as in your description, I shall be that rock god!

  • ok i cant tell if you just played sex, or if sex just played you.

  • BOO YA SHACKA!!!

Man everytime I listen to Bonin in the bone yard I dont know if I should skank, slam dance, or just sit baack and listen to the groovin!!

    Great one man!!

  • GAAAHHHHH!!!!

that's the most BEAUTIFUL thing i've EVER heard!! HOLY SCHMOKES, i WISH i could do that!! you my sir, YOU ARE THE MAN!!

  • I AM NOT WORTHY!!!!!!!

    can you teach me please?!!!!!!

    you are so good

  • you're a spastic freaky bass god!!! porps to you, sir

  • That's wicked

  • Wow! That was really good! I just recently got into guitar playing. You were really awesome. Keep up the good work. :)

  • fucking good

  • Not bad. He's consistently rushing it though. If he lays back a bit he'll have it. Check out the vid that was just posted from a Fishbone show Aug 9 in Beaudour, Belgium.

  • not sure if you quite got this. technique is off.

  • As stated in the blurb...it's an approximation.

  • Kudos man. First off excellent job. I'm not going to say the obvious of "wow's" and such. I'm real curious as to what you're playing through. The Rick sounds awesome, and I'm not sure if it is just the bass or a combo of that and the amp you're using, or even if you're going through a pedal.

  • Thanks. I play through a direct recorder and a multieffects pedal for EQ, compression, noise gate, and gain boost.

  • first and probably the only person ever to put up a cover of this no-one else has the guts it's sooo hard! bravo!

  • You're no Norwood, but then again, no one is. Pretty bas ass though. Nice job. Nice sound on that sweet ass Rick.

  • of course the guy isnt norwood...for fucks sake...that was awesome!!!! how about we all campaign to get patrick..whatever his name is to post him playing it....i'm a guitarist who happens to love AC/DC but i'm no Angus Young....grow up...

  • Fantastic sound you did a stonking job there, you're too modest. I love the look of sheer exhaustion on your face around 1'20"! But you know what, I've got this feelin' from the ocean that it's alright...

  • sick dude

  • its amazing what you can see if you watch someone do something they love! amazing cover man, keep up the great work!!

  • I've got to hand it to you... that was FANTASTIC! You did a hell of a job learning that bass line!

  • I just had to come back for more,,,,,,this rawks! Energy plus to say the least.

  • Thanks, Bill. Sorry I haven't been around lately....science and a broken camera have sidelined me for now.

  • Nice cover and i love the Ric

  • nice 1 i used to love this track

  • OH man me too I have a big grin over my face right now... I'm going to have to look this out

  • Great stuff! I've been a fan of yours for the better part of 8 months. In fact I got into Fishbone because of this rendition of yours (along with some other bands).

Is there any chance you'll be doing anymore Fishbone songs in the future?

  • Well, the only tune I have in my collection is this one, but I am sure there are other good Fishbone tunes. Tell me, since you have gotten into the band, what tunes would you want me to try (and the album it comes from)? If I can get the music, it might take me a while to work it up, but I am always willing to try.

  • One tune that comes to mind that has a cool bass line (as far as this meager ear can tell) is the tune "Party at Ground Zero" from their 1985 self-titled debut album "Fishbone" or where I heard it from the 2003 album "The Essential Fishbone."

It's a cool ska flavored song, but a little weighty at 6:29. Definitely one of my favorite songs from that record due to it's infectious energy.

  • I've got all of there albums, so here's a list of songs that i'd love to see you have a go at and their respective albums. Check out the wikipedia on Fishbone for more information about the albums.

One Day - Truth and Soul

Knock It - In Your Face

    Naz-tee May'en - Reality Of My Surroundings

Lemon Meringue - Give a Monkey A Brain...

Skank N Go Nuttz - Still Stuck In Your Throat

We Just Lose Our Minds - Still Stuck In Your Throat

Frey'd Fuckin' Nerve Endings - Still Stuck In Your Throat

  • Much appreciated...thanks for the suggestions.

  • Oh and add

Ghetto Soundwave - Truth and Soul

    One of my favourites.

You could pretty much pick any song, Norwood is an insane bassist. Definetly just try and pick up some albums and see what you like. This band really changed my whole opinion of music.

  • Considering you're not Norwood (no offence - no one is!) that's some bloody good bass playing you're doing. Cool!

  • man idk if i commented on this before or not, i dont remember but man thats amazing lol... great job man this is a crazy song

  • Got this feeeeeeeling!

  • Damn dude, i just clicked on this because i felt like hearing this song but that was some nasty slappin. You are quite good.

  • Thank you. It's not like the original, but it is as close as I can get to it. Norwood is a monster.

  • FB was a sick group and this song is just an insane slap-lover's dream. You jam it well, extrememly impressive.

  • woaaaaaaa i'm 14 and i got a bass for x mas and i can play lots of stuff just developing the slap and i LOVE fishbone and you sir are my inspiration to make my slap technique perfect THIS ROCKS!

  • keep on groovin man!

  • Are you using the Ric-O-Sound jack or stereo?

  • Stereo

  • good shit dude

  • Thanks. It is wonderful music.

  • i love this! i love your bass i love your fish tank i love your silverware i love how you play i love this song!!

  • My silverware? heheh

Thanks so much for the kind compliment, and my fish tank and bass ("Priscilla") thank you, as well.

  • Nice work, man. Never heard a Rick taken out in that way. I'll keep an eye on your postings. Thanks much!

  • No, thank you....you were the one to take 5 minutes out of your life to see some youtube boob noodle on his bass. I should definitely be thanking you.

  • youtube won't alow you to post a link in the comments section. You can message it to me, though

  • *taking notes* Really, the only two punk bands I have ever listened to are Suicidal Tendencies and the Minutemen. I shall look into these. Thanks for the suggestions.

  • bravo!!!!!

  • AMAZING, That's all i'm gunna say.

  • Im a fan of yours on YouTube, you got some sick skill and smoooooooth style,LOL. Keep up the good work man! Do you think you could do a bass cover of a Circle Jerks song??!!

  • I must admit that I have never heard a Circle Jerks song....that's punk from the 80's, correct?

  • Yeah, thats a punk band from california in the 80's. You up for it or not?

  • What tune do you have in mind?

  • "Live Fast, Die Young"

  • Is there a studio version of this song? I have just heard the youtube video that contains the tune, but it is live, so it is a little muddy and would probably not be suitable for a video. I like the lyrics quite a bit, though...sums up today's times pretty well, but of course, I'm already older than 34.

  • Yeah its on their first CD its called "Group Sex" its track #11.

  • I shall look into it.

  • A very good try. However about the comment you left. The solo is -not- improvised.

"How does he know?" You may ask. That is because Norwood is my father. He has about 3 different ways of playing it that I have heard and he switched parts out in a kind of modular fashion. It took me 15 years of sitting through concerts to figure this out. I once tried to learn how to play the bass... I put it right the fuck down.

  • geez, simply amazing.. you are great.. how long have you been playing? btw, your other videos are great as well haha, thanks for uploading your vids

  • I am glad that you enjoy them. As for your question, I have been flicking the four string for 23 years.

  • Mad skills one the baddest bass hooks Norwood laid down...no time to rest....

    Great job

  • No, that song is a real burner....makes you grit your teeth from beginning to end. I have much respect for Norwoods amazing skils, which dwarf my own. Thanks for dropping by!

  • lol wow nice playing man that was amazing

  • Thank you...it's proabbly one of the toughest tunes I do, and I'm sure Norwood's version is way sicker.

  • lol hey man it looks like you at least had fun doin it

  • I CAN DIG IT!!! I CAN DIG IT!!!

  • Jesus. I wish I had a Ric. Don't they go for almost $2,000?

  • Yes, they do....brand new. You can get a used one for about $800-$900, depending on the year and condition (and a used Rick is every pit as good as a new one). Mine is quite old, and has been in my possession since 1988.....bought it used for $450. It's a 1974 model 4001.

  • Very nice. It's got a really distinctive sound to it. My Hofner Icon is a lot like the real thing, do you know if Rickenbacker does the same, make more affordable basses while keeping the same awesome sound and look? I'm hoping to get a Fender for my 16th birthday.

  • I've tried all kinds of cheaper basses trying to find that comfort that a Rick gives and I am at a loss to find one. It truly is unique. I also play a Scecter, which has a very similar feel about the neck, but an entirely different EMG sound.

  • Great job-I love it

  • Great playing but not there yet keep going like the rest of us!

  • Holy crap dude!!!!

I had seen Fishbone a few times on tour with King's X (my favorite band) and when ever they played I would hope they'd play Bonin' in the Boneyard. One night I got my wish and got right up to the front to see Norwood play that song. This sounds like the most hardest song to play on the bass. You nailed it! Sure not every note is exactly the same but it sounds incredible. I just started taking bass lessons myself and I hope to one day play that song as well. Keep rockin!!!

  • Good luck with the lessons...you should learn way faster than I did.

And yes, it is s tough song to play. I was very glad when I finished this take, as it was like my 6th.

  • 5/5 for tackling this one. Great job! How did I miss this? The only thing lacking, and it'll take you a while, is that you need a Norwood mono-dread up top.

  • I'll get right on that....do you think it clashes with jammies?

  • your trained? wow thats really impressive because youve got an amazing feel for the music, even when you play a few different, not really wrong notes your always on time

  • I just love music but never had access to a teacher or the money to buy tabletures, magazines, and videos. As a consequence, I pretty much play what I hear, and sometimes I hear stuff that isn't there or I don't catch what mode a scale is in. An old friend of mine called my playing "organic". I thought it was a nice way of saying "undisciplined"...lol. Thanks for the nod.

  • your welcome

  • you are the reason I play bass my brother!! keep em coming great job.......

  • gee....thanks!

  • Im really amazed! This is defintly my favorite of all your videos. Let me be your apprentice! ;)

  • Wow, Omegado, I appreciate it. As far as "apprenticeship", you can always ask me anything you want. I'll try to help, but mind you, I am an untrained player, so my methods and my notes might not be "official".

  • crazy stuff ! and that ricky tone is viciously tasty :o)

  • shit, you must have gotten carpal tunnel from that.

    looks really hard, good job.

  • I'm sure the way Norwood plays it is much harder than this and his fingers are far more gangly than mine. This is the type of song that you can never play like the album, but it is fun to spend a lifetime trying. Thanks for watching.

  • "I like to play" -Garth

  • lol...it is my favorite thing to say if someone goes ga-ga over my bass playing. It says what I mean and it doesn't make me come off as Mr. Prima Donna.

  • get their song called Cholly

its so good and really funny

  • dam good.i think norwood would dig

  • That was amazing man, well done!

  • Simply incredible

  • rob im obsessed with this song now XD

  • Would be sweet to see you take on another Fishbone cut. Norwood Fisher's been knocking out sweet bass since 1979 with Fishbone. Lots of material to select from. Lots of genres of music, too. Ska, funk, punk, metal...could keep going, too.

  • Well, I will certainly give more Fishbone a listen. They were great at the Primus gig. This tune is the only one I have on file, but I will look into more. Any suggestions?

  • piece of advise: never slap on a Ricko- They sound like doodoo. You did a good job of playin it, though.

  • bullshit, screw you and your rules. I slap my rick, my stingray and my EB3

  • LOL. Love it. Never slap a ricko? who freeking says? Hey can you do some meters stuff?

  • Some people find the sound of a Rick being slapped as grating. I do not....instead, I say it is unconventional.

Thanks for the defense...I owe ya!

  • they dont wanna sell out.they got all they need where they are now.. SOUL.

  • Why is this band not more out in the world. They're great.

  • You are right; this band did not get the respect or credit they deserved. I never would have heard of them if it was not for Primus opening for them on the Seas of Cheese tour.

  • I love playing "Stump the Bass Player"!! It's one of my most favorite games.

You did an awesome job, honey. I'm impressed as hell!!

  • GrooOO000OOoovy! U da man!!

  • LOL. The very ending was the best part XD. (I don't mean that because it ended. It was very cool!).

  • To me, it was the best part, too. And I can say I was REALLY glad when it ended.
