For info this is from 1958 Susskind/LPO Messiah; Frederick Jackson Choirmaster, April Cantelo soprano, Helen Watts contralto, Wilfred Brown tenor, Roger Stalman (aka dad) bass, George Malcolm harpsichord & Harold Darke organ.
I have only heard one version of this that is really "dark." It's the JEROME HINES version Klemperer. I'd love to find it. HINES has some trouble with the higher part, but he NAILS the low notes. Usually this is done by a bass-baritone. HINES is perfection.
