Brian Dulmaine and I discovered this live version years ago and it is still one of our favorites. Danny may have been losing his mind but his songs and playing were unreal. Dragonfly remains haunting!
This recording is so good. In the live concert version Christine joins in on vocals from the beginning, I prefer him singing alone here, his voice doesn't need adding to, the 'ahs' are enough in the background. There's a nice echo sound quality to this recording, the guitar is something else.
@nearSeattle84 - What a great memory for you. I think it would bring a tear to my eye if I saw a class full of little kids walking around to 'Dust'. Your teacher was bright. I was thinking 'Dust' is quite a somber song for someone so young to like, but then I remembered listening with intense concentration to 'Hey Jude' when I was very young, it really grabbed me.
Since some have asked, this was not on any studio album. The studio version was a single (the other side being "Purple Dancer") recorded just after Kiln House, with just Kirwan, J. McVie and Fleetwood. This live version was recorded after Spencer left and Welch joined, probably around the time Future Games was recorded.
I have loved Danny Kirwan in Fleetwood Mac since I was a kid listening to Future Games and Bare Trees. When I was in 1st or 2cnd grade (7 or 8 years old) I brought Bare Trees to school (BF Day in Seattle) to play "Dust" and we all walked to the beat (that was our assignment - to find the beat) a memory that brings tears to my eyes. I am so happy people on YOU TUBE also love Danny Kirwan, I have been so touched reading pure-hearted comments of love and appreciation for him and his music.
This is great song, but this performance lacks the Green's touch. Listen to version with him, and listen what's happening after second and third verse. Now, those fills are amazing and I fallen in love with this song from first touch by them.
Saw a clip of this song on a Mac doc and had been looking for the full version for a while, great that it's here. You forget just how many great musicians this band has had over the years, Danny being one of them. God bless Danny and thank you.
THEY SAY HIS EX WIFE HAS TOLD A LONDON INTERVIEWER THAT HE KEEPS TO HIMSELF THESE DAYS BUT KEEPS A GUITAR UNDER HIS BED WHERE HE IS BEEN STAYING BUT ALSO HAS SAID IF PETER OR MICK OR EVEN THE OTHERS CAME TO SEE HIM THAT WOULD BE NICE BUT HE DOESNOT LIKE AMERICA SO HE WILL STAY IN ENGLAND HE IS ABOUT 60 YEARS OLD NOW AND IS STILL VERY LOST AND SORT OF A EMPTY SOLE . TOO BAD
@sheddski its a shame he cant see any of these clips to remind him of how great he was and still would be. If hes still playing guitar thats all that matters. he played blues the way it was meant to be played!
Dragonfly was performed in "Greatest Hits" by CBS records. in 1971
Some other version of this fantastic D.KIrw song were perf. med in live concert or when the group was invited in a studios perf.(like this one in the video)
The first period of FL MC was magic... Not to say that more recent song of the group was not...but the spirit and the sound of the band in the 70 th was uncomparable.
Sorry, it's difficoult to understand why FL MC aren't so famous like other group of the same years.....
In no particular order, this band produced: The Green Manalishi Black Magic Woman Dragonfly Rhiannon Tusk Go Your Own Way Don't Stop Little Lies You Make Lovin Fun Dreams The Chain and many more unforgettable hits. Why are they not regarded as one of the top ten bands in music history. With each defining era of music for one or more hits they trounced all other acts for musical ingenuity, class and showmanship.
nice chords in this song. Kirwan's brilliant, of course, but Welch does a nice job holding it down. Nice subtle bassline. Beautiful song... 8)... groovy.
Every band should be able to perform with straight feeds to their amps for a taped television audience.
I love that I can find stuff like this on youtube.
This song is like the feeling you get when your not quite awake in the morning. Anything can happen in dreams and reality. I really love this thankyou for the upload
@Hobditch Danny Kirwan today would be 50 years old. If his alcoholism is as bad as many say, he should be dead! Think about it, he's been drinking heavily over forty years!!

thank man i didn't like fleetwood mac when stevie an dlindey came aboard too commercial an they sold out leaving the blues like they did, danny was really geat hmself as well as peter and jeremy.
Well it may have that meaning in a way i suppose, but the lyrics are actually from a poem that Kirwan didnt write. However he may have chose the poem to better express the thoughts he had about Green leaving. I;ve read the Kirwan wasnt always that comfortable writing his lyrics
Hauntingly creative & beautiful. Danny Kirwan's music especially with Fleetwood Mac stands the test of time & always takes you to a good place. Would be great to hear from him again if he ever feels up to it.
The more I listen to the Danny Kirwan stuff, the more I realize what a great composer and guitarist he is. His songs go straight to the emotions like few others do. This video captures the essence of the song perfectly. I love the way it morphs from the ethereal into the real towards the end, just in time for Danny's wonderful guitar lick at the end.
I agree. As for the places the magic carpet of English born Danny Kirwan's music could take you to....there was shear adrenaline guitar art (Tell Me All The Things You Do, Jewel Eyed Judy, Station Man)... and...haunting but beautiful (Earl Gray, Woman of a 1,000 Years, Sunnyside of Heaven). No doubt...great places for a Dragonfly to hang out. Amongst others.
The era with Christine McVie, Bob Welch, and Danny Kirwan as the lead singer/songwriters was FANTASTIC! This era doesn't get the credit they so rightly deserve. Even as a huge fan of Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham, I get so sick of people saying that Fleetwood Mac wasn't good until they joined. This band was great from the start.
I gotta say something here! I found this song today and it's a life changer. I have been a fan of Danny Kirwan since 1972 when I heard his song "Dust" and then got the "Bare Trees" album. I heard about "Dragon Fly" in a magazine that I saw this week which recommended it. What a great ethereal track.
someone told me danny had moved to sweden with his girlfriend after homeless hostel closed,i think thease lyrics say a lot about him, although the garden is a lovely place, are we worthy of so fine a guest, dont think so,peace and health danny x
Just wondering whether anyone else has heard this same rumour about Danny moving to Sweden. And I agree, the lyrics really do say a lot about him. He had/has a rare gift. Just think of the music he could have made, if alcohol and emotional problems hadn't messed him up so badly for so long.
Back again after a week...this video is just mind blowing!! Maybe the best 3 minutes of Fleetwood Mac in their history! Danny Kirwin is magical in this song!!
Agree completely with some of you posters... Danny is & was not given enough credit for his influence and creativity! I think his influence lasted long after he left the band even more than Peter Green's! His writing and singing styles I feel even influenced Bob Welch & Chris MacVie! Love this Video & Version... WOW!!!
Like other commentators have posted on other Kirwan clips here on YouTube, many could play the blues, Kirwan could play AND FEEL. You can see him FEEL in this clip as he is playing. Something I try to emulate when I play guitar.
As far as I know it is only available as a single issued back then and in recent years on the CD called "The best of Peter Green´s Fleetwood Mac" (track 16). Awesome song!!!
It is available on a Cd called Fleetwood Mac Greatest hits Not the one with Dont Stop on it. This one has Green Manalishi, Oh Well, Albatros and of course Dragonfly
yeah he's still alive! he lives in a hostel for the homeless in london. unfortunatly he still drinks alot and aparently no one seems to think he will ever perform again due to confidence issues :-( look at his myspace theres loadsa info on him there!
Danny Kirwan now resides in a London psychiatric hospital. He ia diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. He is, however a subscriber on You Tube. You can trade vidoes with him and correspond. Just, that he speaks a lot of Spanish these days!
Forget Stevie and Lindsay, the band(s) from '69-'74 were much better. Anybody know where I can find footage from these years? I would like to buy it on DVD, if possible. Thanks...
Better than Peter Green one of the guitar giants?! Lindsay Buckingham is a very expert pop musician but he ain't no guitar legend. How many people have you met who have told you they wanna be Lindsay Buckingham when they grow up?! Clapton? Green/ Jimi? Yeah. Lindsay. He likes the Beach Boys. Not better, just something totally different. You can't compare the best English blues band with a pop phenomenon.
Pretty incredible works. Dragonfly is another gem along with Woman Of A 1,000 Years, Sunny Side of Heaven, Tell Me All the Things You Do, Jewel Eyed Judy, Earl Grey, etc. Kirwan was talented beyond belief and his beautiful haunting & hollow signature guitar is simply...beautiful. Hope he comes back soon & treats us again to magic.
My favourite Fleetwood number bar none. I too would have loved to see it without the effects but "Beggars can't be Choosers" they say! Thanks for posting.
My main goal for this video was to find out where i could find Danny Kirwan and interview, cuz i plannind on doing a documentary on the pre Stevie era of Fleetwood
Good luck with that! I hope you can find him. Think he's in London, last I read in the Covent Garden area, though I don't know if this is still the case. I would love to write to him and tell him how much his music means to me! Keep us posted!
yes i heard something similar...what become Kirwan... i knew that he was alcoohlic until lately...but i hope that it has changed! ...Did you hear something new about him ?... i dont know why his history touched me... my father died at 44 killed by alcoohl and cigarettes abuse... so i think that i can more or less understand Kirwan situation
This is indeed from 71. It came out as a single just before the Future Games album was released. Kirwan, Welch, Fleetwood and the McVies... What a line up! Perhaps my fav FM lineup ever. Future Games and Bare Trees blow my mind. Kirwan is a gem!
Absolutely! Feel exactly the same way! I am just now getting into his music all these years later. I only wish I'd been aware of FM when Danny Kirwan was in the band. Even now, his music on Bare Trees, Future Games and Kiln House, not to mention all the fantastic blues stuff he did prior to that with Peter Green, is phenomenal. How great to hear and see this video finally! Thanks so much for posting it!
Peter Green is not playing here. I found this song on a Beat Club VHS tape in the mid 80. Amazing stuff and I have never heard anything else like it.

Danny Kirwan is one of my main influences. Who could get him to play again...? Is the man alive, does anyone have any info on him?
Reinisen 3 years ago
yeah he's still alive! he lives in a hostel for the homeless in london. unfortunatly he still drinks alot and aparently no one seems to think he will ever perform again due to confidence issues :-( look at his myspace theres loadsa info on him there!

Danny Kirwan now resides in a London psychiatric hospital. He ia diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. He is, however a subscriber on You Tube. You can trade vidoes with him and correspond. Just, that he speaks a lot of Spanish these days!

I say everyone who has watched this vid, should form an alliance to find danny kirwan to get him back on stage

I saw this lineup in the 70's - Danny impressed me!!!

Not sure about crazy. I think he had emotional problems that may have been worsened by alcohol or drug abuse(anyone ever hear of Amy Winehouse?).
dlanodrelda 4 years ago 3
Its sad that he turned crazy and went homless. He was one of the best.

He certainly was :-). Latest thing I read was that he (Danny) now has a small flat in a rehabilitation centre of London.

The old classic fleetwood mac stuff like this and Oh Well and Jam music are vintage. Too bad the current fleetwood mac doesnt make music like this!

This song is unbearably beautiful. I could listen to it for eternity. I love Danny's voice and his guitar is pure magic.

My favourite Fleetwood number bar none. I too would have loved to see it without the effects but "Beggars can't be Choosers" they say! Thanks for posting.

I would also love to see this video of "Dragonfly" in its original form, without the special effects. Can you tell me where I can find it? Thank you!
miriamele3 4 years ago
There's a short clip of it in an upload of mine "The Fleetwood Mac Story (Rock Family Trees 2 of 4)"

Scrub that, it's just the end bit of this when the special effects have been taken off.

Simply gorgeous! Fantastic to finally hear this particular track, after reading about it. Thank you!

My main goal for this video was to find out where i could find Danny Kirwan and interview, cuz i plannind on doing a documentary on the pre Stevie era of Fleetwood
GreenyMcFleetwood 4 years ago
Good luck with that! I hope you can find him. Think he's in London, last I read in the Covent Garden area, though I don't know if this is still the case. I would love to write to him and tell him how much his music means to me! Keep us posted!
miriamele3 4 years ago
Yep, Good luck, been reading all things Fleetwood today, it does seem that sadly he's become the one remaining "lost member" of the band
thingsihaveseen 4 years ago
yes i heard something similar...what become Kirwan... i knew that he was alcoohlic until lately...but i hope that it has changed! ...Did you hear something new about him ?... i dont know why his history touched me... my father died at 44 killed by alcoohl and cigarettes abuse... so i think that i can more or less understand Kirwan situation

This is indeed from 71. It came out as a single just before the Future Games album was released. Kirwan, Welch, Fleetwood and the McVies... What a line up! Perhaps my fav FM lineup ever. Future Games and Bare Trees blow my mind. Kirwan is a gem!
martfoote 4 years ago 4
Thank you for that info
blueice0170 4 years ago
