This is awesome footage and the sound of your shifting is extremely beautiful. The Ruf sounds great up top as well - how did you guys adjust for altitude changes? Many times the rally cars up near Devils Playground start popping and losing HP. Are you going back to the Peak anytime soon? Each year that I go I notice that it seems to be getting less popular. Any thoughts on why? Thanks!
Altitude was certainly a challenge for this pre-OBDII CTR, and Pikes Peak's 14,000 altitude is certainly outside of the factory's intended operating range. The solution was to have a RUF tech ride in the passenger seat the day before the race and program three different chips based on that day's weather conditions (barometric pressure, temp, etc.) with the intention of on chip set for the lower third, another for the middle third, etc. Then we pray conditions don't change too much overnight
I think that Ouninpohja SS in finland is THE stage of world. Max average speed 132km/h. I don't know what pikes peaks max.av speed is (please tell me) but still pikes peak looks slower and less thrilling. When you compare Ouninpohja and pikes peak looks like pikes peak is highway and cars fly trough ouninpohja literally. I would love to see some pikes peak proto cars on ouninpohja but thei suspension would have to been heavily modified to take punishment of flatout jumps!
Pikes peak is just too easy, wide road with no specially challengin parts. Here in finland we have ouninpohja ss rally stage, that was too fast to fia officials so it's banned in wrc now... Wrc cars jumping 200km/h in midle of forrest makes pikes peak look easy.
Looks quite lame compared to flying fin Ari Vatanens run on 405 t16. Americans must been shamed when finnish rally driver in french car flies to the clouds such speeds... :)
having been up the pike's peak a number of times, that person is moving pretty good. The video of Ari is a well edited movie complete with overdubbing so it certainly seems much faster. But in reality, look at the true time difference, figure the difference in average mph, and its not that much different.
Ari Vatanen was one of the fatest drivers of rally world. he drove the 205 T16 hell of car) few people can drove that kind of car. in the video he ses a 405 T16 (hell o car too). Do a litle research about Michelle Mouton and Ari Vatanen... the guy is a legend........
In addition to being one of the foremost Porsche tuners, RUF is a recognized manufacturer in its own right (attained manufacturer status about 20 years ago). Currently, RUF models start with a Porsche "Body-in-White" (raw chassis) from which they built their own creations. When complete, these RUF manufactured cars are issued a RUF VIN and come into the U.S. under RUF's DOT and EPA certification.
not really, RUF just take the body in white and put their own engine, and their own parts. AMG is just changing the engine, but the rest is still mercedes, and it still has the mercedes brand on everything
This guy has balls of steel! I have driven Pikes Peak several times, although not competive. I would't push 50 mph on that road let alone the speeds he must have achieved to finish 12 miles in just under 13 minutes! Additionally, the altitude takeS a tremendous toll on the car. I ran the hill in a 95 Camaro LT1 (300HP) and towards the top it had no guts! My hats off to both car and driver in this video!
I always find it interesting that the people who say something sucks never do anything them selves. This guy could not have been to bad to get 2nd in open division. Any one who has driven that road knows the risk that was taken. some spots if you miss, you don't hit ground for 500 feet, then probably don't stop skidding for 1000 more feet.
If it wasn't for that lifting off the throttle, I'd barely know these cars are on the way. In 1986, Unser's had more of a pop sound when he let off I think. Did you race lately? Thanks for posting the videos while it was still dirt.
Very smooth drive. Imagine watching it in HD on a 50" screen :D
Hold on your armchairs hehehehe !!!!

what's the difference between RUF and Porsche?

oh, ok. so RUF is to Porsche what Shelby is to Ford? i get it now. thanks
turchenko 4 years ago
yes, like amg for mercedes or abarth for fiat
CokeLaRoke 4 years ago
no, amg isnt a manifacturer, either is abarth, theyre just official tuners, RUF is a manufacturer, and shelby too
olilem 3 years ago
but the work they do on the car is the same,so...
CokeLaRoke 3 years ago
not really, RUF just take the body in white and put their own engine, and their own parts. AMG is just changing the engine, but the rest is still mercedes, and it still has the mercedes brand on everything
but it is a lil similar, ur right for that
but not exactly the same
olilem 3 years ago
and in RUF also the body are modified
if you wanto to compare to a mercedes
RUF---Porsche
Brabus---Mercedes

Is it a single or twin turbo. And what year model is it?
bentleyv8t 4 years ago
It's a RUF CTR which are twin turbos.
yellowbirdCTR 4 years ago
doesn't it make around 450hp or around that?
How much power does it make?
bentleyv8t 4 years ago
You are right. I recall that RUF rates CTRs at 469 hp (and he is noted for always under-stating his power ratings).

Nove video and nice driving.

yellowbird they are actually Blow Off Valves not Wastegates, wastegates control the speed of the turbines ie controlling boost
that whistle is just the type of attachment he has on the Blow Off Valve
pilotboy84 5 years ago
nice sound and i like the sound of the dumpvalve
veilside1968 5 years ago
That's the turbos' wastegates opening. When the driver lifts off the throttle, the turbo pressure is bleed off. A very cool sound indeed!
