  • I just wrote in my journal how I feel ashemed that I haven't really regarded any girl in my life in a way as beautiful as Shawn Phillips writes poetry about. Either my perspective of life is too ordinary or Shawn Phillips only dated women straight out of heaven.

She came with the grace of an angel here

    And her melting doelike eyes

    In her velvet dress

    Like the soul she is

As open as the starry skies

And we made love in the morning

    With the red sky dawning

And our souls merging into one

  • I was listening to this man at age 13 with awe and wish "kids nowadays" would listen to quality singer/songwriters with real instruments. Nothing beats smokin' a bowl and listening to Shawn Phillips.

  • WHERE IS IT?

  • I was playing this in the car, and my 8 year old, who has autism, told me I had to bring the CD in the hosue to keep playing from this scong. I didn't even think the kids were listening in the back!

  • @jenduke63 great!!

  • @piercethevale The actual lyrics from when Arlo & Suz had them on the website are:

    "And the etiquette of grass

    Will have to last

And we'll save it for the very last prize

    And the utilization

    Makes a unified nation

We may see it with our very own eyes, very own eyes"

Your interpretation may be valid, but obviously the nation is still far from unified ... California voters still wouldn't legalize pot in Nov. 2010.

BTW, I'm not a pot user nor advocate, but have good friends on both sides.

  • After 40 years of trying to comprehend these lyrics, I find them to be the most elusive of all of Shawn's work. I love 'em, but I still can't claim to understand what he's truly saying.

No way am I giving up, but I will accept help from anyone who offers your interpretation. Smiles!

  • @piercethevale ya ... I love all the multi-layered meanings in shawn's songs!! : D

this is one of my favorites!!

  • @yogamix Yay for multi-layered meanings! They're almost nonexistent in music-industry "music" (2 or 3 layers at best). And yet every one of Shawn's pieces is loaded with meanings, many of which don't surface until you've listened bunches and bunches of times (see my comment at "Ascent").

Do you know of any other musician as directly connected with God/consciousness as Shawn Phillips? I've never heard any other musician whose understandings of life are so deep and so damn STRONG!! WOW!!

  • Loved it then, love it now. Unleashed and amp'd to then nth!

  • One of my favorites! Poet, vocalist, musician, artist!

  • I came across this song a little over a year ago. I waited so long to hear this song again. I tried remembering words, the melody everything to hold on to it, to make it last. Telling friends who were knowledgeable in music to help me find it. "Screamer for Phlyses." by Shawn Phillips. I then googled and found this site. Who ever you are thank you. This is like a christmas present from heaven. The lyrics, melody and guitar work is simply gorgeous. Still looking for "Withered Roses"

  • Thank you - you're very welcome! So happy I was able to bring some musical joy to you. I've just uploaded "Withered Roses" for you. Enjoy!
