  • 0:58 epic sax drop...... dubstep?

  • Hymn !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Such tragedy, gives me goosebumps everytime I hear it,

Thank you Mark van den Akker, for introducing me to this song and the Waterboys in general.

  • @anya21ify And how many had Berlin , raped earlier ? Idiot !!!

  • 0:58 - epic sax drop

  • @bobmarleyisgod1 America hasn't been free for a long time.

  • Powerful...

  • This song is amazing!!

  • NO WORDS FOR THIS SONG - ONLY LISTENING AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN...................

  • "When I left my home and my family, my mother said to me : 'Son, that's not how many germans you kills that counts, that how many people you set free.'

So I packed my bags, brushed my cap, walked out into the world, 17 years old, never kissed the girl....!"

That's the only lyrics you need to this song... :°-\

  • @Fabzil theline "17 years old...never kissed a girl" ...that gets you

  • One of the best song ever

  • love this song !!! the guitars great :L

  • Having been to America a few times I'm pleased to say that most of them are ok. It just a shame that the pricks that are there find their way to making such uneducated and moronic comments as below. It's funny how many cretins holler about pride in their country when, in reality, they wake up to something pathetic in front of the toilet miror everyday. I think, bigots and all, would agree that this is a great song and tune though.

  • @Skipinderjit I like this comment muchly

  • first time I've heard this song and OMG one of the best songs I've ever listened to in my life. thanks for posting.

  • Epic song.

  • perfect

  • sounds like killers if you listen carefully

  • Fuckin beautiful...

  • The Red Army won the 2nd World War, and be thankful Hitler wasn't a General. A war on two fronts? A bad idea.

  • Would all the toytown politiical ranters just dissapear!. Go find yourself a suitable forum to vent your spleens instead of BORING and IRRITATING the shit out of those of us who just want to appreciate the song(s).

  • You idiots are fighting about russia and america and germany ! WTF ! The whole point is to STOP fighting ! Stop war??? Do you know how many people die in wars?? How many children stay orphaned ! Stop talking about your political views because you are just a noise ! Instead try to stem this problem !!! Lets try to change the world ! and sorry for calling you idiots ;pp ahaha <3

  • @MarineInfantry00: You're defending North America, there was attempted genocide there, mass graves of the Native Indians, it happened when America was first colonized, but if you're looking for more recent, and current American attrocities, look at Latin America, 100 years of exploitation, the 'War on Terrorism' in the middle east, pretty sure North America is involved in that, don't you think?

  • so tired of getting on you tube, enjoying a beautiful yet sad song, then reading political doctrine from ill informed, self aggrandising, couch politicians with their heads up their asses.

if you have a political agenda, form a political party, and change the world, instead of just being a loud noise, on a quiet day with nothing to say.

  • @mwinstanley7

    Great song. Good music. Point.

  • @mwinstanley7 you post that same rant on every video you watch?

  • @TestMiNuh you are a tripper ... obviously

  • discutions about russia versus USA or wathever just reflect that you didnt understand and/or listen this song..

  • America raped the indians, took all their resources and crushed their spirit. Now America has the problem of not being able to take care of their own because they're too busy policing the rest of the world.

  • You mean americans, or the Europeans that did it ASS!

  • @renerubia Don't bring a bow to a gun fight. I don't feel bad for them one bit.

  • Well then yes, if hes going that far back in time to Americas past then yes he's right. But Im ill educated.... I think not my friend, you cant even spell; culture, source, effectively. So you can shut your twat mouth, and get off your high horse saying im ill educated. America is what America is, cause a dominate culture came through making it what it is today, among many of the other culture's including Native Americans. They wer,t thinking of the future, and their actions, just the now.

  • Death to Comunisim !

  • stalin wasn't communism at all you idiot!

    stalin is like bush

    he's a killer

    he' an idiot

    he's a fascist

    he even killed trotsky

    but you americans

    you can't understand

you can only kill just like you did in korea, Irak, afghanistan just like stalin

  • it's called protecting our interests. if it weren't for us "Americans". you would be living in the fucking stone age, along with every other pathetic and weak nation of the World.

  • yeah its like this...sentimental bastard!1!!!

  • peeps calm down.

  • 17 years old and never kissed a girl:P that's the best part:D love this song<33333

  • very sad words i think mmdc2001 had a point.

  • excellent, full of passion, i love the sax bit really sexy, sends shiver up my spine. also the words create a sad story.

  • Took me ages to find out what this was based on. It's not the Valerule Dunarii suggested below, but is Polyushka Pole, written by Lev Knipper in 1934.

Knipper was also an NKVD spy. In old secret papers released by the Russian government in 2008, the Soviets had a plan in case the Nazis took over the Kremlin, within which Knipper's role was to assassinate Hitler.

Mike Scott's version is the best, slowed down, rearranged, with superb lyrics. Best singer/songwriter Scotland's ever produced.

  • what happens in the end of this song?

  • He was sent to the gulag. Didn't say how he faired there... Just said while imprisioned, he only was left with his brute will to survive.

  • Russia defeated the Nazis and what America, Britain and all others combined did was a side show by comparison. Westerners should know that the nuclear holocaust visited upon Japan was as a threat to The Soviet Union. It is not the Soviets who threatened us it was the other way round. No wonder Uncle Joe was paranoid....see how America now wants weapons on Russias borders? Imagine that the other way round. What would our media be saying about Russian missiles in Mexico?

  • excelent

  • I remember listening to this as a child and wanting to join the military. I did join, and found it to be hardly as epic as I would have imagined. No more good guys vs bad guys these days, no more heroes or tragedies. Just bureaucracy... I LOVE this song, even to this day.

BTW, I saw them live about 10 years ago. I was 14 then and it was the best experience of my life!

  • Comment removed

  • ex-fucking-cuse me?!??!?!?!

this song ist so very VERY AGAINST joining the military.....

  • You are ec-fucking-cused! Hahaha!

I didn't say this was a recruiting song. I just said it made ME want to join.

So... What's your point? LOL! I just like the song, and my comment had nothing to do with what you are pretending to be upset about.

  • my point is you seem to be pretty retarded if THIS song MADE you join the army.

or pretty jung and not listening maybe....

  • there never was bad guy vs good guys in the world, just people vs people

  • Hmmm..... You must have missed the part in school where it was the Axis vs. the Allies? ie. The bad guys vs. the good guys.

If you are stupid, that is fine. I just don't see why you would want to demonstrate to everyone online. And your point is well... pointless.

  • you are stupid if you think you can call human beeings the good or the bad guys.

and you pretty sure have no clue what this great song is about.

ah whatever i wont waste time with you.

  • ah one more point: if you joined the army, you are retarded.

    over and out.

  • Actually the ASVAB screens out retards. Sorry to disappoint

  • Um, then what do you call the country committing genocide and invading others? Oh, wait! LOL! It's YOUR country! Hahaha!~

And your guess as to if I know what the song about is off base. I only commented about how the song made me feel, not on its content. LOL!

    Fail.

    Hahaha!

  • Mass genocide and ethnic cleansing in North America. Do they teach that in history lessons in schools filled with people of immigrant ancestry and often the descendants of these mass killers?

That aside this is a wonderful song and tune i.e. " Son it's not how many Germans you kill that counts but how many people you set free".

  • What are you talking about mass genocide and ethnic cleansing in North america? Where are the mass graves and killing fields of your atrocious lies. If your trying to compare us to the russians or germans, your a fucking fool.

  • Maybe you are forgetting the conalisation of america by many nations (which eventually became the USA) where the native americans had their land stolen, the food sourse destroyed, their cultrue effectivly eradicated all because of the "oppertunity" the now american nation saw... Skipinderjit isnt a fool but you are ill educated... just because you dont know where the mass graves are or where the killing occured it doesn't mean it didnt happen

  • @Symbioticism you're a moron. Just think for a minute before u talk about America. if it wasn't for America, you wouldn't live the life of freedom you have now. thanks to the many lives in WWII, you're able to say what you want now because they risked their lives so you can live yours, all in the name of freedom. if we had never taken the American lands from the Indians, some other nation(s) would have long before today. Which in case, we wouldn't have many things we take for granted, today.

  • @MrImmabanana what insightful comment, we would be in the stone age along with every other country. It seems to me that you are a bigot with very little understanding of history. America as a nation has not existed for very long and as such other countries (and native Americans) had gone well passed the stone age. Or had that passed you by? Also, on what grounds do you base your opinion that America is the only country stopping everyone else rolling around in their own filth?

  • @Symbioticism and here is where I make my point... I don't give a fuck about any other country. when I said the stone age, I didn't mean it literally. I just meant you wouldn't have all of our great inventions, you know, the things that made us very rich and let's not forget the most powerful country in the world.

  • @MrImmabanana And here is my counter-point: the reason people across the world dislike the influence of USA is because of two things - your atrocious foreign policies and the ignorance of people like you who say things like "I don't give a fuck about any other country". Have you never thought to wonder why your country is the target for so many terrorist threats and attacks? Don't kid yourself it is jealousy (if someone is jealous they can just emmigrate), it isn't. It is anger.

  • @Symbioticism again.. I don't CARE! we rule the world. that's all that matters. in other words, you're my bitch, lol.

  • @MrImmabanana Well, I guess ignorance is bliss for some people.

  • @Symbioticism yep it is..carry on with it...ever been out side the USA?

  • @taatgnosall Indeed I have. I am not saying the USA is awful and the rest of the world is great or vis versa I just think some global perspective is important and some (only some) Americans seem to lack it.

  • Communism is evil, sinful, foul, vile, dishonorable, corrupt, iniquitous, depraved, reprobate, villainous, nefarious, vicious, malicious, malevolent, sinister, demonic, devilish, diabolical, fiendish, dark, monstrous, shocking, despicable, atrocious, heinous, odious, contemptible, horrible, execrable.

  • A point of order—Mike Scott is Scottish, not Irish.

But Red Army Blues is one of the finest songs ever written...

    DK

  • up the ra!!!!!!

  • I was 15 when this song came out and studying world history, every war every else in the world!!

Gallipoli is where the largest amount of sons and daughters died for my country!!

And it was the cold war when this song came out, I found this album!!! This song killed me I played it over and over.

I made it my mission to go to the place where my people lost their lives so I could have democracy and freedom!! An Irish man singing a Russian Mans Blues says it all really!! Frm a kiwi chick

  • Hard stuff, your Memories..

  • this song is haunting

    but i love it

  • i get shivers when i hear this :)

  • Without words!! very nice

  • I loved this song 25 yrs ago when I was a member of the Revolutionary Communist Party and marching in the H-block marches in London.... I still listen to this song whilst being beaten on by the Merseyside Pigs for my much unappreciated liberal tendencies. I believe it is based on the russian/romanian folk song 'Valurile Dunarii - Losif Ivanovici' and on 'We Will Overcome - Pete Seeger'. my version is 'beat me, beat me, beat me, you fascist sadist pigs coz I am a commie leftie pinkie masochist'!

  • Amazing song.

  • I bought this album over 25 years ago and this track is the best.

  • Which Russian folk song?

  • Singing Guitars - Поющие гитары. 1969 Полюшко-поле

    Just take a look!

  • My all-time favourite song...

  • thanks

  • fett

  • The louder it`s played.,the better it gets

  • Very good,

Thanks, Mattalu92, for sharing with us...

  • Can't knock it, but I like This is the Sea CD and especially Be my Enemy. (But then I live in a village and it bugs them to hell if I play it loud).

  • Great song. What is the original title for this song (or refren). 3 years ago, i heard the original (i think it was)and it was amazing.

  • What do you mean? Mike Scott wrote this song.. The original is by The Waterboys... the one you're listening to is the Waterboys, (Mike Scott's band)....

  • Well, I think it's based on a russian hymn.

  • the melody is poyluska pole which is also known as the song of the steppes in the west i think.

  • Nope. You failed.

This is mostly a russian cossack song.

  • i have noticed something about pop culture; why is it that every american boy that gets killed in some tragic manner in any war comes from tenny?

not saying that there are absolutely no mentions of boys from other parts getting offed, it's just that the larger percentage of songs/shows/movies always cite tenny.

    any reason for this?

  • For some reason I'm in love with the polish people. They suffered alot. What to think and do when I love this tune... My son went to Auschwitz and Krakow to see and understand. I will go there soon. To see and possibly comprehend. Love is all:

  • There's no such thing as a winnable war.

This is a great song, wrenches my heart everytime I hear it. Great lyrics.

  • So incredibly great. My cousin tells me that to experience this song live is the best thing ever. Wonder what the Russians think about this tune.

    привет :-)

  • The ATHLETES who compete in the special olympics are not retarded, they have a disabilaty. You sound retarded though.

  • The ATHLETES who take part in the special olympics are not retarded (mental disabilaty) they have a physical disabilaty. Are you retarded?

  • nice comment

  • My heart feels hurt at times about the young people lost in that war, seems to me no won at the end of the day

  • i used this as a poem for my junior cert

  • great n sad lyrics

  • e-bullies are awesome

  • Amazing Song!!!

    Sad&Beautiful.

  • If you like this song and the story behind it, then check out a song called 'Roads To Moscow' by Al Stewart (it's on here if you search for it). It covers the same ground as 'Red Army Blues' with some lovely guitar playing too!

  • Saw them yesterday on a festival. Never listenend to anything of them before... this song blew me away. Great work!

  • Uwielbiam ten utwór !!!!!

  • Ja Tez :)

  • I've noticed that the 'enemies' of the west are always those countries who won't allow our money men into their economies to rip them off. When Yeltsin opened up the Russian economy to be ripped off by Shylocks who then ran away to live in London and New York, they were 'nice' Russia then. Our goverenments make enemies of those who won't be ripped off by them. Ossetia was attacked by Georgia but who would guess that from our media? BBC CNN FOX SKY et al are nothing but mouthpieces for the rich.

  • Musical Genius-Mike Scott...I couldn,t have grown up listening to a better band.

  • I dont know what you people are yapping about, this song is simple and deep. Its about a country betraying a soldier who Stalin thought was westernized by the Americans in WW2 when they met each other on the elb river. Sending him to the gulags for many years when he thought he was going home, fighting for his country ans he gets this treatment. Its a hard thing. Tasosathens is right America did the same to Americans who they thought were communist and the Russians the same

  • You mean the Soviets....Stalin was a Georgian not a Russian. Most of the bolshevics with political power were Jewish not Slavic. The fact is that millions of 'white' Russians were slaughtered on the orders of Jewish Bolshevics. Not something which is mentioned in the west. Soviet Union had specific laws to protect Jews too. Stalin wasn't Russian either. He was Georgian. Irony of ironies.

  • Either way thats the point of the song, they were screwed over by their government.

  • That kind of poorly disguised racism is not welcome anywhere near the tubes.

  • Racism? What does a Norwegian have to say about racism? It isn't so long ago you had the old eugenics programme in place in Nordic countries....shut up you fucking prick. And one more thing, don't talk as if you are some sort of custodian of moral behaviour on YouTube, you fuckwit.

  • Thank you so much for pointing out that a lot of Norwegians are racists. Thanks, I had almost forgotten... Now let's move on to something relevant, shall we? Oooh, you're telling me to shut up? Wow, you manly man you. Whatever shall I do? I'm not pretending to be anything, I'm merely stating that it's not welcome anywhere, a simple fact, you don't need a title for that.

Oh, and thanks for the pm. I shall read it when I feel like having an internet argument.

  • If you understand English as well as you seem to think you do, you would see that implicit in your first comment was that I should shut up. So, I have merely reciprocated. As for your manliness or otherwise...it doesn't interest me. As for the 'thinly disguised racism' you referred to; what is racist about pointing out the fact that most of the Boshevics were Jewish? The relevant point to a rational mind should be, is it true?

So grow up son and don't bother me again.

  • With all due respect, which isn't much, that statement was made by me, so why are you telling me what I meant? I never mentioned my own manliness... It is racist to strongly imply that their being Jewish was why they killed the mentioned people.

You keep trying to show off to the world that you're the superior adult telling a child what's what, but your language tells me you have the mentality of a 14 year old bedwetter. This is a good song, so listen to it, and lets discuss politics elsewhere.

  • With absolutely no respect (but much more intellectual honesty) it isn't racist to state that Jews were largely responsible for the ordering of a mass slaughter against the indigenous people of Russia. If you don't like that, I don't care. If Jews don't like it, I don't care about that either. By your twisted logic the converse sympathy for Jewish victims of an appalling holocaust would be unacceptable too. Or at least to mention the ethnicity of the participating parties.

  • I don't know what definition of racism you're using, but most people will agree with me that yes, that's fucking racist.

Yes, it would be unacceptable to imply that Christians in general were to blame for the holocaust.

  • I don't care if the whole world agrees with you sonny boy. You see I don't need psychological backup from others. I know I'm right. If you want to see racism, I suggest you look at any western report about the war in Yugoslavi in which our 'nice' western nations all vilified Serbs and the beheading rats who we supported were painted as 'victims' Well I'm sure most people would agree with you on that pack of shite too....but I know better. So fuck off son. I'm bored.

  • A fine example you've got there, so what's your point? That doesn't justify other racism elsewhere. The reason that you're bored might be that you seem to disagree on fundamental ethical points with everyone but yourself. Next time you want to complain about boredom, you might want to conform just a little bit to society instead.

  • I'm bored by you. Not life.

  • Then why are you still on youtube carrying on with this shit?

  • The shit is all yours. I am on YouTube because I choose to be. What is your reason?

  • Because I've got time off and choose to spend it finding music.

  • Fuck!! You 2 should get a frigging ring and sort it out!!Man...Let's get the fuck on with each other. What happened ...Happened!! Move on people...Life is too short..for fucks sake!!!!

  • I think you ALL should chill out for a wee while!!!

  • Crackin' bit of sound.

  • Masterpiece of humane songwriting from mike, stands the test of time

  • Americans talking about communism.

What do you know about communism?

Something red and evil with yellow star?

You exterminated every communist in usa after ww2.

So what's the difference between your fasist leaders and stalin?

    He killed his ''enemies''.

    You killed ''yours''.

But waterboys didnt make any song about the victims of your ''democracy''.

Go and watch a Rambo movie my friend..

    You ll feel better.

  • Communism is just utopia...some people do tend to use communism as a way to tirany. But then, some so-called democratic countries are equally fake (I could be wrong, I'm just an idiot living on a troubled world). Anyway, this song is fantastic, one of the best songs ever made. Thank you Waterboys!

  • what a powerful song. but why cant i find this song on there discography? what album was it on?

  • It's from "A Pagan Place"

  • missin the whole point stalin was a mass murderer yes that cannot be denyied. But you are forgetting lenin never trusted stalin thats why stalin had trotsky murdered.stalin was as communist as thatcher and reagan.

  • what?

did you understand ANYTHING about what the song is trying to say. power doesnt corrupt, lack of power does.

  • are you serious? the song is about the millions of young men that stalin had murdered because they talked to a fucking american or britian during the war. he wanted to make sure that communism would remain in his country and stop democracy from coming about.

  • your greek communists missed your chance and you should be grateful for it . the system is unjust and does not work millions died under USSR , one word as well GULAG

  • i would like to hear your opinion on greater detail. we all know that communism is a great idea, but just doesn't work as a government. its been tried many times with the same results. i believe it was Einstein that said "idiocy is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results". could you explain why you believe that communism would work in Greece, even though it has failed in so many other places.

  • yah, kick his ass loopydoug!!

  • the keyboard is mightier than sword. the only way to shut up an idiot is to say something that looks smart, although he didnt seem to be responding to any other comments. so how do like the waterboys? they got into celtic stuff around the time they did this one i think.

  • hmmm...not crazy about them, but i love their "this is the sea" song =D

  • Ever heard about Cuba?

  • one tear, damn its still a good song !! Please, bring back the big music

    Remember Rotterdam?

  • fuck u u nazi lovin prick

  • how bout fuck Stalin?

  • How about "fuck Stalin AND nazis"? ;-)

  • touche

  • o man that made me lol

  • From official The Waterboys website:

"Mike has said in interviews that the song was inspired by a book called "The Diary Of Vikenty Angorov" but that the story itself, though based on historical fact, was his own."

  • good song.. nice russian melody..

but very ideological lyrics.. anti-soviet and not true..

  • True alright! If not, tell what is a lie in the lyric.

  • bloody awesome song. Anyone have the song by them called, i think, "love anyway"?

  • Its on mike scotte's 2nd solo cd 'still burning'.

  • and on here wonder when someone would put it on

  • this is what i call : music with a message

after this song i listen to billy joel : leningrad!

    just goosebums making music!!!!

  • This song is very moving and the sax on it is great. A bit out of date now as the Berlin Wall came down in 1989 but the sentiment remains.

  • My MoM IS LIKE 75 AND THIS IS HER FAV SONG, HOW COOL IS THAT

  • that's in fact really cool;D

It only shows that it is a good piece of music:) I'm 15, and i love this song, and when people at the age of 75 loves this music too, it shows that this song will last in generations:)

  • You are 15 ? Then imaging to go to war soon (2 years to go), fight for 3 years and come back from war only to be sent to the Gulag. What is more powerful in this song: the musik or the lyrics ?

  • Thats very cool, cheers mate !

  • Mike Scott = genious . He is awesome!

  • Now that "Kalinka" is the Chelsea song perhaps it is time for 'Waterboys' or Twang to record it.

  • we have to learn about this as a poem for our junior cert...good song too...
