Thank You so much for this fascinating interview, and more especially for the effort you have taken to supply us (non Russian speakers) with subtitles!
It's really nice to be able to see Dmitri offstage, and speaking as a "human being" and not as an opera star, not that he ever appears to be big headed or anything.
I HAVE SEEN D.H. lately here in vienna; first rigoletto , then eugen onegin yesterday-- excellent of course. I ALSO SAW HIM AFTERWARDS AND NOTICED THAT HE DOESN'T WANT ANY PHOTOS TAKEN AND IS QUITE ADAMANT ABOUT IT: I don't remember THIS FROM BEFORE: ANY THOUGHTS ON THIS?
@eunegin Please don't shout :-) I also saw him as Rig in Vienna. He didn't want any photos using flash, he explained that it's because of his contact lenses. Anyway, I guess he's not too crazy about being photographed, he's a person, not a monument :-)
BTW, what is the Onegin like? (I don't mean vocally, of course :-) ) DH himself seemed quite enraged about the production.
Russians are more formal about these things. Calling him just 'Dmitri' would be intimate to the point of insulting, like calling Sinatra 'Franky' but 'Dmitri Hvorostovsky' is too formal.
It's normal in Russian, I guess. His father is Alexander, therefore Dmitri Alexandrovich Hvorostovsky. It's like Aragorn, son of Arathorn :-)
Maybe somebody whose native language is Russian can shed more light on this subject? My opinion is, it's a matter of respect, to call him D.A., and not just Dmitri.
@frufruJ I just had a lengthy conversation with a Russian Painter and she has related to me that they call people by the Patronymics for respect and warm regard.
DH - For now it's the first project. Today we met the representative of this bank. We will talk, will share the ideas and plans, and something definitely should happen. Believe me, I am not going to isolate myself from this. I think our contacts allow us to do something interesting in the future.
TJ - Thanks a lot. Today the guest of our program was one of the most famous opera singers in the world, national artist of the Russian federation, Dmitry Hvorostovsky. Have a nice day!
TJ - You sing at the most famous halls and theatres of the world. Is there any secret of success which would allow to find a key for the hearts of quite different people? I mean people are different everywhere because of mentality, traditions, habits.
DH - Utmost sincerity of what you are doing on the stage. Sincerity and inability to work carelessly.
TJ - Dmitry Aleksandrovich, what is your attitude to the cooperation of art and business? Is your partnership with MDM bank the only project?
DH - In order to be an impresario someone should know a lot, to be a sort of adventurer, to be able to take risks, to take risks for your own creation. It's a big responsibility, that's why everybody is afraid.
TJ - I see. Tell me please what would you say, what year your career started?
DH - 1989. The end of 1989 and the beginning of 1990.
The text about Cardiff and where DH usually sings.
DH - But before this I was just a soloist of Krasnojarsk opera theatre, already quite successful, super young and loved, supported by the audience and the authorities - but locally. As for the impresario institution - it does not exist anymore, but it used to exist. There were famous, good known among Russian artists and Russian audience people. For example Sol Urek which brought Shaljapin, Arhipova worked with him - she told me a lot about him.
TJ - And why there are no impresarios? Maybe impresario school does not suggest many interesting people? What's up? Or it's because you started your career namely in Russia?
DH - No, I am talking about my career abroad. Because in Russia I was too much verdant and I don't quite remember it. I would hardly call a career what was in Russia before my, how to say, big career started. Because I shot so unexpectedly for myself and for the others and it started.
DH - You know I want to think that I took part in my career - namely I. I mean that nobody brought me to that, but I was leading my manager's team which are not precisely impresarios. Unfortunately I have never had a real impresario. And it's a shame - I would love to. Unfortunately there are no such people anymore. The people which are able to take the responsibility and to lead a young talent, to guide him.
DH - I am glad that I have a possibility to make such a "salad" from what the audience likes and from what the audience has to swallow, to swallow something unknown, something bitter. It's interesting to do such things. I watch the reaction and get some special satisfaction.
TJ- I want to ask you not as a creator, but as a person. Certainly you are a successful person. What does determine your career? Is it an assigned trajectory or an occasion? How did you took part in building your own career?
TJ - There is such a notion as a popularity. Do you take in account what is going to be interesting for the audience, what is your criteria?
DH - Of course. I follow this. For some time I have been singing more popular music. Songs, popular World War II songs, popular USSR songs, popular Naples songs, popular Russian folk songs, popular Russian romances, popular arias, not popular arias, my favourite arias which could be absolutely not popular and so on.
I had and have chamber concerts in big university towns with university audience, students - it's nice. Sponsors also work hard on bringing the students into opera halls. Because the tickets are certainly expensive. In order that a student can attend an opera performance the tickets should be affordable.
DH - The audience... in a way it is changing. However, not as fast as I would like. In big opera theatres, especially at prestigious performances, there are only grey heads. Especially at premieres, at the beginning of the season I see just grey heads. It looks very interesting. You know, such white hall. However, in many theatres there is a certain program which popularizes opera art among students. Many concerts, as I am aware, especially in the USA....
DH - The program will consist of the romances of Tchajkovsky, Metner and Rachmaninov.
TJ - Great. I would like to ask, you have a possibility to compare, tell me please if the opera halls audience has been changing with time? Or not? What is the dynamics?
Tatiana Jaitskaya - Today with a great pleasure I present you our guest. He is one of the most famous opera singers in the world, national artist of the Russian federation, Dmitry Hvorostovsky. Hello Dmitry Aleksandrovich!
Dmitry Hvorostovsky - Hello.
TJ - You don't often visit our city, but your every visit is the event in the cultural life of Ekaterinburgh. It would be intersing to know with what program you came to us this time - just a few words.
I love him, is he single :)

Смотря кому.Это зависит от человека. Руджеро Раймонди , например , прекрасно держится и не корчит из себя звезду, хотя является ею.

Do not attend.
Almost do not attend.
Once in 2-3 years.
Few times a year.
Few times a month.
