Chaotix are as you said in American Knuckles Chaotix and the Archie comics, but in Japanese Knuckles Chaotix, they're just a group of random travellers. In the newer games and Sonic X, they're the detective trio from Sonic Heroes. And finally, in Sonic the Comic, they appear to be some sort of task force designed to take down Super Sonic. I really don't know about that yet, haven't read too much STC.
