She speaksTRUTH! its like all other subliminal messages brain washed and fed into our subconcious mind. We are not aware of the effects but they are there, and thats the purpose of ads and movies, music, and even cartoons. 2keep us blind so they can control us and we continue BLINDLY living the "AMERICAN DREAM" standard, not realizing that theres more to life than what we are fed. Like FLOURIDE in water and toothpaste. FLOURIDE is bad, but as long as they keep ""tellin us" its good it must be!

her speech is very intelligent and entertaining and she does speak truthfully. however men are mostly portrayed as dumb and socially incompetent. so I do not think that women's portrayal is worse. it's 50:50 I'd say.

Wow. This reminds me of all my classes where we had to use a single data set to prove and disprove something using statistics and that data set. what she says has a toe in reality, the rest is simple fancy tap dancing to get us emotionally involved. Nice argumentative dictation, but your as one sided as Hitler was when he convinced a nation to follow a single ideal. Good choice in images that support your thesis. I agree with your overall message, You just spread it on a little thick.

As I understand it, she just says (which seems perfectly logical to me) that seeing someone no longer as a "full" person but rather an object (usually modified to fit your desires), you are more prone to getting violent towards "it".

And I don't see where anyone made a claim that violence towards men is more acceptable. It's just not as pervasive in society .

Most ads I think are just more subtle, but I don't assume you deny the fact that there is a lot more pressure on women to be "perfect" than there is on men (though I think there has been a tendency for men to make more use of cosmetics etc than 10, 20 yrs ago).

1) concerning WHEN the lecture was given: I think she mentioned in one of the previous parts of it that it was at the beginning of the new millenium, and I saw on wikipedia that that was when the "Killing us softly" series was "updated" in 2000, so it seems to fit.

I was under the impression that violence against ALL genders and age groups was going down steadily for about 30 years now. I'm just not seeing a convincing connection between what she calls the portrayal of violence against women, and actual violence. I'm seeing the same false perception held by people who want to ban violent video games. Fake violence doesn't cause real violence.

@cyanmant You filter what you see. This doesnt mean its not there. You can play Grand theft auto all day long and still be social. This doesnt mean you cant get influenced by it. People see things on television or games and they project this into the world. Sometimes you can be unaware of doing this. Your brain saves everything and you remember just a fraction of the hole. It matters what lives deep inside of you If you are angry fast you have more change of losing control.

@mindinflow By that logic, every person who has ever seen a murder on TV or in a movie is accomplice to any murder that ever happened. We can't go around blaming real violence on fake violence. I also object to the implication that violence against women is more morally unacceptable than violence against men; the idea that men are all horrible monsters who need to be tamed. And by the way, this still doesn't address my first point, which is that she hasn't cited any evidence of this "epidemic".

@cyanmanta actually, your assumption is quite wrong. it is, in fact, the opposite: violent crimes against women are on the rise and have been for quite some time. Check Naomi Wolf's The Beauty Myth for figures. They are really shocking.
