A truly beautiful work, but no wonder nobody wants to program it, it is VERY (and unnecessarily) difficult... a pitty. Fantastic recording by the way!

The "Manfred" symphony combines the best and worst of Tchaikovsky and as such is a seriously flawed masterpiece. It is a great shame he did not live to revise it . In parts it is totally banal and in others totally inspired but at least we can enjoy the best parts which are truly memorable.
Strangely, Tchaikovsky was never particularly proud of this symphony, so much so that he refused to give it a number and even threatened to destroy the manuscript. Thankfully, he didn't and it survives for us to enjoy. Despite the composer's indifference, I think that after the "Pathetique", it is the next best of the seven.
Incredibly powerful! I had heard this in the final episode of Gankutsuou, and was pleased to find it was a Tchaikovsky piece I had not yet listened to.

Thumbs up if you think this symphony should be renamed to: "Tchaikovsky Symphony #7 ("Manfred") , Op. 58
