  • If he meant to stop, he over shot by quite a margin there.

  • The smoke was just moisture being pulled from the damp track below, not brakes.

  • I'm smoking hot.

  • You're an HGV mechanic are you? Nothing is wrong with the trucks or my driving.

  • boooooooooooring

  • wow :)

  • Somebody in the train forget the brakes on :D

  • This dust/smoke is common when class 221 sets (ex-tilting on XC) are running with the dynamic brake isolated on a particular coach, meaning that the coach in question is braking using its friction brakes only. On 221s the friction brake pads act on inboard discs on the axles, which usually get coated with all the oil-bound crap normally found under diesel-powered units. This crap then warms up and burns under heavy braking.

  • I'm an HGV1 driver and when going downhill with a heavy load (44 tonnes) for a prolonged period there is always heat and smoke from the rear brakes. Even with modern technology and 6-weekly services there will be effects that you can see/smell/feel from this kind of braking. It's normal.

  • @vickozoomba

that don't sound right to me something is wrong with your truck or your driving.

  • @vickozoomba Why not brake with the engine when brakes get hot?

  • @DEADmetal3 You can use regenerative braking only down to about 10 mph before it becomes ineffective. If you're talking about throwing the engine in reverse, you would end up doing a lot more damage that way to the engine itself. Honestly, I don't think there was anything wrong with the train here, trains normally put up smoke for one reason or another all the time.

  • @vickozoomba stfu man you just saying that to make yourself look clever

  • it seems to be a shot axle bearing, very common problem for modern trains. They cause these massive smokes

  • That dust was the composite of the brakes shoes. At work the stuff gets absolutely everywhere. Its usually the softer brake shoes which wear quicker as we have experimented with different shoes. This train could have been running on a softer composite metal.

  • Are you train spotter? if so we are brothers :) im airplane spotter :)

  • and.....................

  • Where is this?

  • nothing like a bit of burning brake dust to spicen up the day lol

  • @Shilocandyrox haha thats how i found grimmie ... wierd

  • Or one of the brakes is simply locked in place by a malfunction.

  • It`s Chuck Norris farting!

  • @zibbledy

Chuck Norris doesn't let gas pass

  • Looking at the deceleration I would suggest it's an emergency brake application, in which case some smoke from the wheels and maybe a few sparks are certainly not off the cards. For anyone who's been inside a train when it's done this it's also likely to pull a few muscles in your neck or throw you half way down the train. xD

  • @Shilocandyrox maybe shes smoking hot

  • This problem also persists on german train waggons (double-decker) having the type DPz. these use disk brakes and there were cases where the brake assembly caught fire after heavy force-braking (or after emergency-braking).

I often can smell the brake (this really stinks) this after my commuter train has stopped in my hometown after running with 160 km/h which is the maxium allowed speed on that line there between Erlangen and Bamberg in Germany.

  • THE TRAIN DOESNT BRAKE....!!! THERE IS DUST ON TRACKS!!!

  • Must have been an emergency brake app as normally they have dynamic brakes down to 12mph normally. Emergency uses disc braking all the way.

  • mayby it was just exaust fumes

  • S H I T

  • hotboxing the train maybe :D

  • pendilino >:D

  • c00L

  • Something about it smells like chocolate

  • i laughed when i saw....something in the movie before this one

  • omg, did the train die?

  • be my friend ok

  • im with you intercityHST

  • it was the brakes they got hot every one

  • It was Chuck Norris hanging underneath while having a cigar

  • Are you sure, that you are sure, about being sure, that you are sure the trains brakes where hot?? Sure?

  • are you sure there was no alien inside the train?

  • are you sure it wasn't the carburator?

  • are you sure you sure? lmao

  • shoulda cracked a few eggs on there

  • put it in reverse, then pee into th cup

  • thats just dust dumb ass

  • Fake.. I don't see a breaking light

    Nah just kidding LOL

  • Somone just flushed the loo!

  • oops looks like that driver has forgotten to stop at Tamworth Station for passengers to depart & passengers waiting at the platform board the train. Stupid Driver.

  • Wheres cool bug ;) lol

  • the stones and the platform look wet right at the beginning ( i believe platform 4?) could it be possible that the rail was wet... could just be water.. if not could be brakes but somehow i believe its water..

  • the crosscountry voyagers smell of toilet shit if you go close to them!!!

  • no its defeintatly train brake because when the 221 passed u culd here some noise from the train

  • Might also be sand, trains often use it when the wheels slip...

  • It would be smoke from the brakes if the unit was breaking hard. In general stopping ie for a station 220,221 & 222's all have rehostatic brakes fittied which means the drive mech gets put into reverse to slot the train down rather than just jamming the brakes onto the wheels.

  • YOU CALL THAT A TRAIN LOL

  • @grizzleybearz282004 Yes, Yes we do =)

  • Comment removed

  • not that i know of on the speed part but ours trains look alot better and can pull more weight unless your talking about the subway class trains and i know nothing about them im more into the old steamer type locos and diesels from when thay first started rolling on the rails late 1940s into the 1960s but hey if what you guys got over there gets the job done everyday then so be it

  • @grizzleybearz282004 Ahh well the steam locos are not in regular service here anymore unless you go to a privately owned railway or u wish to charter one for the day on a mainline but these days diesel and electric easier to run faster better at accelerating and easier to maintain there pretty comfy aswel lol

  • What happen. The train has forgot to stop at the station . the train driver was asleep :D

  • its the carbon brake pads

  • Its most likely braking in "full service" and the smoking is dust off the carbon brake pads.... the smell of burning is the carbon pads too....

  • Go touch the track.

  • The smoke we are seeing is more likely from the diesel engine quite often an over filling of oil willl cause smoking from the exhaust,it is not uncommon for fitters to over fill the engine. Each coach is fitted with a small diesel unit which powers the traction motors and electrical systems. They are only a small 750 hp engine and their design is compact so oil seals leaking would not be uncommon also.

  • Voyagers are fitted with a computer that monitors and protects vital systems like the brakes so dragging brakes in this instance is highly unlikely,as the driver would be receiving alarms and warnings on his display and if he does not respond the computer will automatically bring the train to a complete standstill to prevent further damage occuring.Nearly all modern locomotives and multiple units are fitted with computer protected sytems these days as it keeps costs down.

  • Note the lack of slowing down. It's not brakes at all. It's either a fresh traction motor burning off it's assembly lubricant, or a hot wheel bearing aka hot box.

  • why u post such a shit ?

  • that looked like emergency brakes to me

  • same thing happened to me, except it was my car XD

  • its cocaine powder from the junkie sitting between the carriges..

  • ballast dust.

  • Are you sure it wasn't a hotbox?

  • @s7o0a0p no they do that though tamworth drivers normaly slam on the breaks

  • @s7o0a0p Voyagers do not have axle boxes, instead the axle is suspended from the bogie frame main with a central bearing arrangement, which is monitored by the on board computer for temperature, vibration and speed etc .also the rheostatic braking is located here also(the traction motors energy is converted to provide braking)

  • What is the gauge?

Looks wider than 4 feet 8.5 inches.

  • The video is in widescreen when it should be standard 4:3 aspect ratio, hence the picture is stretched making it look all wrong.

  • @robertgift the same gauge as its always been, 4 foot 8 and half inches

  • @robertgift 1435mm

  • Oh shit !!! It's too late. Has it gone through?

  • Ok who wants breakfast? Ill bring the eggs you bring the bacon lol

  • It is dust from the brake pads in contact with the discs (and very hot). The voyagers have EP brakes which are rated about 17G on a dry rail. There are no magnetic brakes fitted and there are 1 shot sanders which are very effective but it still takes time to stop - driver would have got a single yellow at the signal protecting Tamworth station and his next signal is after the viaduct before wilnecote station so brakes would have been on hard hence the blue smoke !

  • holy crap

  • hahaha

    was it ment to stop?

  • I remember seeing a French BB25500 doing an emergency brake. Not only was there smoke, there were sparks too!

  • i think that was only the dust

  • Can i just say after it went passed it actually smelt like burning

  • Of course, that's the usual. A brake is anything but two extremely hard metal and/or carbon parts transmitting cinetic energy between them... energy that turns into heat due to the friction.

  • @intercityHST the burning smell is the from the friction caused between the pad and disk and the smoke is a combination of heat haze, dust and any shit that was on the pads/disks being burnt off, more than likely some grease/oil had come in contact with them from either an engine or grease point.

  • @intercityHST are you sure it wasnt the Bob marley train? :P

  • i thought these Voyager trains have magnetic track brakes for emergencies. do these things have dynamic brakes too?

  • Maybe he thought "SHIT!!! I WAS MEANT TO STOP HERE!!!" lol.....well it has happened before!

  • once at newcastle i sore a class 142 fly through it got to the bridge stopped and had to come back in lol :)

  • @ ringjig WTF! Learn how to speak!

  • ring needs to go back to school.

The first time did not take.

  • u cant understand it?

  • Nowadays, most of the trains have sand pods. They inject it between the wheel and the rail to increase friction in case of an emergency brake. This could be happened here.

  • ITS BRAKE DUST!

  • hmm, wouldnt see a HST doing that would we now.

  • What are you talking about? Anything that brakes hard enough will create brake dust!

  • British Rail - says all

  • so much for new trains or maybe lack of maintenance

  • Its brake dust, its quite normal...

  • lool nice vid man ! and i love smoking hot brakes ! lool i wish are trains did that some times ! loool boring old southern service ! take care man :)

  • are you sure it's not dust?

  • im pretty sure it wasn't because no other train on the same day did the same

  • good video mabye he ment to stop at an signal

  • @intercityHST So you sat there the whole day watching trains? Thats erm ... weird...

  • @Kardieschen

well thats just what he likes to do, so enjoy his vids, and stfu!

  • bloody hell there smokin hot 5 stars!

  • yup and the smell was terrible and thanks

  • Last time i saw that it was an emergency brake application

  • well it mite of had it emergency brakes on because it was slowing down very fast

  • Wow great video, loved the going away shot with the brake shoe smoke lit up by the sun. Wonder why it had to stop so fast.

  • Thanks Mate and i have no idea why it stopped so fast because they usaul go very fast through there

  • Maybe there was a red signal ahead

  • yh possible

  • Awesome!

  • cheers

  • SHsmoooking!!

  • lol sure is

  • Phoar bet that caused a bit of a stink, burning brake blocks smell nasty!

  • yh it smelt terrible after

  • *quite..

    gosh.

  • Umm thats what mite of been wrong with it but who knows, its was slowing down very fast cause usaul they fly through there so it could of had the emergency brakes on but we will never no

  • Ive seen that before from both a Pendolino and a 60, I think its normal really. Nice video though, thinking of trying Tamworth just before Christmas.

  • umm probly just one of thoses things that just happen and you should go too tamworth i seen over 20 freight trains there in about 4-5 houres

  • Yeah but its quite risky with both the high and the low levels at the same time, and doing it without Freightmaster or somesort of heads up would be a bit of a kerfuffle.

  • i agree i did miss all the freight down the bottom expect from one but i tend to stay up the top cuz theres always more freight like there was yesturday so it can be very annoying

  • Yeah but not just that im also a fan of Pendolinos on the fast, and I know theres plenty obviously.

  • umm well its up to you

  • Yh i know what you mean,

i was on the bottow line a few weeks back and the 56 fastline passed over the top and i could just see the roof so i was pretty annoyed

  • yh i missed that fastline before when i was waiting for my train home, sadly it didnt turn up yesterday but hey i did capture 13 freights so not all that bad

  • Well, that's much better than i got,

    what classes did you catch?

  • 2 class 60s

    and 11 class 66s

so not the greatest of traction, the only other traction there was, was 2 class 90s but missed both of them

  • woah! Ive smelt the brakes from a HST in the carriage, but thats normal, I hate to think what that smelt like!

  • kl never smelt the brakes from a hst before and yh it smelt terrible after

  • tends to be when they braking on the approach to a station

  • umm are have too check that out next time i travel on one

  • hehe

  • Crazy!

  • very
