I wouldn't stress. It takes time to pick up. A lot of American slang and accents flew over my head when I first lived in the States.

One thing, Americans tend to talk from the front of their mouths and extend their vowels. Patois generally uses shorter vowels like "ah" "oh" "uh" instead of American "ooo" aaaaye" and we OPEN our mouths and use our whole throat when we talk.

Now think about how you would feel if a foreigner approached you with a real understanding of your language.
