that's why in the nations that run high speed trains, they have a thing called active train control which will prevent any sort of massive colission due to prevention of running stop signals. If the US did this, perhaps we would have less rail accidents.
Boy, if they were on the same track that would be a horrifying mess.

What's the difference? I've heard of Kodama, Hikari, Grand Hikari, Hikari RailStar and Nozomi. What is the difference between them?

Kodama (means "echo") stops each station.
Hikari (means "light") is faster than Kodama.
Nozomi (means "hope"), since 1992, is faster than Hikari.
Supplement charge is required for Nozomi except non-reserved seat.
Kodama, Hikari and Nozomi run between
Tokyo, Shin-Osaka and Hakata/Hukuoka.
