Of course you don't *need* one. You also don't need to wear your seatbelt, own a fire extinguisher, lock your doors, or have health insurance, but they're all good ideas.

this video really helped me..I'm just a young kid with a nice northrock mountain bike 24 speed(overall its a very nice bike) and i LOVE to go on bike rides for a long time,for christmas im going to get a nice water bottle,a rack to hold my stuff,a bike computer and maybe riding gloves...

If possible get shoes with treads and the cleat inbedded.

It allows for a lot less play on the pedal and it's much better when you need to walk for any reason.
