Both Garek and Dukat were Cardassians trying to redeem themselves. Difference, Dukat does it to attempt to impress others, Garek does it to save his soul. At the end, Garek stayed the course of redemption and was saved, where as Dukat dove deeper into his darkness until it consumed him.
According to "A stitch in time", one of the Star Trek writers (Jeri Taylor) came up with the name "Circassians". After being told that there was an ancient tribe she played with the word which finally resulted in "Cardassians".
My mum's obsessed with star trek, and when she went into labour 14 years ago with my brother, she was watching it and she named him Elam after Elim x)
Someone will always need the services of persons with Garak's ability and training, and certainly during times of war. Dukat knows that; he just doesn't like Garak.
I don't see why they were so worried about standing back and letting it happen. So the federation might be the next target, but I'm sure the Klingons wouldn't pose as large a threat to the Federation after open war with the Cardassians...?
@Restayvien i was reading, and hoping not to comment, but the fact of the matter is that compared to the federation or the klingon empire cardasia itself was more like a single wolf on your land, taking down a deer a week. annoying but no real threat. the klingons had never had a reason to wipe them out, and the federation would never make a preemptive strike, the romulans also never had a good reason. but any of those three powers could squash the cardassians like flies if they had/wanted to.
@kght222 the problem of the time was that the cardasians were a logical bridgehead for the dominion, and a war like what the klingons intended would have driven the cardies right into the dominions hands.
@kakashi76767 because the klingons don't share a border with the cardasians, and would risk their treaty with the federation by attacking them (would have to be done across federation space). the only thing that let them do it without killing the treaty was the alliance against the dominion at the time. other reasons most likely, but that is the primary that let them do it.
@Restayvien and don't try to say "if that's true how can they fight back" or some version of that, they can defend themselves. what they can't defend against is an unexpected attack from a galactic power beyond them in most capabilities. keep in mind that the cardies are not under treaty to not have cloaking devices, they still don't have them. they are relatively weak and behind in technology. but they are close to the hole, and possibly strong enough to take it, the dominion wants them.
@kght222 I'm not really worried either way. I enjoy the series, but I'm not heavily invested in the fictional universe so it really doesn't bother me who could beat who down in a scrap, lol.
@wlanus Even during the worst of his exile, Garak took only minutes to get in touch with Gul Dukat. You don't find that telling? Garak was always lying. You can count on the fingers of one hand the number of times he told the truth during the entire series.
@wlanus "Same old Garak, never tell the truth when a lie will do." That was a quote about Garak from his own father. Whatever Garak admitted early in the series was a lie. ALWAYS. Of course he knew what was going on in Cardassia.
Move a full fleet of ships into formation? Unlike the bumbling US Government, the Cardassians are far more adept at scrambling a fleet to PROTECT their territory when it's under threat.
I love that expression on Garak's face when sisko call him to the ward room never get to see that one again........ For some reason it reminded me of Data's expression dont know why......
You know, it could be me just being foolish, but I recall many times when both Sisko and Odo were able to get a hold of Gul Dukat without much fuss. Was conscripting the services of Garak really necessary?
@NosferatuD Transmissions are trackable, sometimes even when carefully concealed and the faintest trace would spark an incident but this way they can turn around and say "Well, *we* didn't tell the Cardassians."
@surfingthechaos I loved how MORN played courier for Federation news service and also fleet movements and tactical info. TRIVIA: Do you know the connection between "Cheers" and MORN?
You would think that since the Klingon invasion happened so soon after the failed Cardassian/Romulan attack on the Dominion that Sisko & co. would have thought to check Gowron & Martok to make sure this wasn't a Dominion revenge plot. I mean seriously, they knew that the Founders could make themselves look like anything & anyone. Dopes.
I love how they end the scene with "Then we'll just have to find a third option..."
And then IMMEDIATELY cuts to Garak, lol.
Ah yes, Garak was extremely underused, he was definitely one of the most interesting characters on the show and always had the most interesting storylines.
@Archedgar Oh man, I agree wholeheartedly!! Andrew replayed the zodiac killer for heaven's sake!!‼ -- they could've at least made that good an actor a regular. *sigh* Once again, ST directors/producers didn't know what they had..
Manipulated? Not at all. Everyone knew what was going on. This was an intentional leak to the one man that could get the info where it needed to go within the hour.
Wow you really think Garak wasn't aware of what was going on? That this spy just thought that they weren't aware of him listening, that he needed to take Sisko's measurements while he already had them? This master of the game of manipulation?
Are you freakin insane? Garak knew what was going on the whole time. He didn't even have to be told why he was being given the information. Garak, master spy/assassin, son of Enabran Tain, head of the Obsidian Order, knew EXACTLY what was going on the whole time.

Considering the race was named back in 1991, that's unlikely.

@Draknfyre Robert Kardashian was well known as a big time lawyer back then.

Still unlikely. They don't generally name alien races after people like that in the show.

@Draknfyre Sure they would. The Klingons were named after someone Gene Roddenberry knew. As was Khan Nonien Singh.

Worf has great wisdom. If not for Worf, the Klingons would come across as barbarous pirate thugs. He added much needed dimensions to that race.
