  • hi rob, i think instead of the no.-sound relationship, i am developing no.-fingerpositioning relationship by this exercise..... is that okay?? like if you call the no. what i would remember is which finger to put where...instead of the sound that should be associated with that no.

    Any suggestions?

  • @gautamsvid I unfortunately don't understand what the question is. You should just practice this until you can play any of the notes by ear.

  • @robbourassaguitarist What i meant was that it is hard to do the reverse of this exercise. i.e. you play a note and then tell whether it is 1or 2 or whatever, which i suppose would be important to play the notes by ear.

Thanks a ton for the reply....

  • Excellent

  • Hi Rob,

Is there any standard pattern to this exercise? I wrote the sequence down, but I cannot see the pattern, it seems random to me.

I understand that this exercise is to train the ear to get accustomed to intervals between notes, if so speed should not be the objective of this lesson right?

Thanks for all the free lessons, I am finally getting the time to work through the first one, C major scale.

  • @Stomo1709 This is just the major scale, and I mix up the numbers of the notes, so that people can learn to associate the note by number more easily.

  • Awesome lesson for anyone beginning guitar and even the more advanced players! I myself have been playing for 8 years and normally wouldn't usually consider taking a beginner course like this but after watching your banjo lessons I was interested to see your guitar teaching method and I must say you are truly the best instructor on youtube if not the entire web! great lessons Rob!your hard word is greatly appreciated! and motarski, if you think this is a waste of time, you might as well quit...

  • fuck my knuckles hurtt

  • @motarski I can tell by your playing that this is all you can do, and even though I don't owe you help, I would suggest that you condescend and go back to square one.

If someone doesn't see the importance of a lesson like this, it is obvious that he knows very little about music.

So, your private test will be to play Happy Birthday, complete with chords, like any real musician could do. If you can't, you need this. Many people realize too late that they have wasted their life with pride.

  • if im not looking at the strings, i always misplace my finger, rob can play without looking but, is it ok to practice by looking at the strings whilst you play?

  • so am i supposed to be able to play that at a moderately fast pace before moving on with interval training? I see that we are moving on into chords, but are we still into the interval side of music theory...just a long way around?

  • I would tell you to keep plugging away on it, even though you move onto the chords. Hearing the chords, and noticing the notes through the arpeggio, or the staggered chord, will actually help your ear as well, and melodies will become easier.

So keep going, but keep working on this as well.

  • @robbourassaguitarist Is the goal here to be able to play the note in the chord without thinking about it? If so, then it doesnt matter what the order is because you want it to be random anyway correct? If so, can i have someone sit in front of me and repeat 1-7 randomly or should i learn the pattern that you use in this video? Thanks agan

  • Love this exercise - Although I cannot watch you and play I have to turn my back to you and listen to your voice and get absorbed - I try not to 'think' about what to do and I just do it - when I do that it seems to flow easier.

I know you have been thanked many time for producing these videos - so add another thank you onto the pile - these videos are GREAT!!!!

  • Cool beans, as always, Rob. I couldn't figure out why you titled this one "chord" instead of "scale" until the very end. The idea that the number/sound relationship needs to be internalized is critical and probably the gap in my abilities. THANKS!!
