The firefighter is using a driptorch to start a backburn. The driptorch contains a mix of petrol and diesel and it drips out slowly, catching alight at the burning wick on the end, thus setting the bush alight. We do this for a number of reasons, in this particular case we were doing it because the same section of bush on the other side of the hill was already alight, so burning on this side removed fuel from the approaching fire, which reduces the risk of it jumping into unburnt bush.
These men and women are nothing short of fucking superheroes. I was in Bendigo VIC for the fires and I have the DEEPEST respect and admiration for the employees and VOLUNTEERS who risked their lives saving ours. Fucking amazing human beings.
Excellent video...the Victorian fires were so devestating and to see how fast it spread was really quite frightening. It saddened and shocked us all across Australia. The thing i have noticed about disasters in Australia is that it brings not just communities together but also states. In our floods here in Queensland it was so heart warming to see volunteers from all over Australia come to help us.It was really amazing to see the truck and volunteers from Kinglake arrive to help...beautiful people
@12nickc i would say that they would be getting used for troop and supply movement. there would probably been a shortage of other vehicals and would depend what diferent bases had at there disposal too.
the death toll has now been lowered to 170, great vid, excellant. the music suits it, excellant job on containing it, i made it to the kinglake fire for a week, we could do nothing, we drove through marysville...there is nothing left, it is devastating. it is hard to do our job some times...if we don't who will? brillant photos
