  • I would have loved to be at this game. But I was at the Pens/Isles game in Feb. 2011 to see the Friday night fights.

  • LOL at :39--:42

The guy in the suit was all brave at the fans until the barrier came down. XD

  • hard to believe there were less head injuries back then.

  • Back when hockey was actually like "Slapshot"the movie.

  • Legen-Wait for it.....

    DARY!

  • Fantastic clip, thanks for posting. Looks like something out of Slapshot.

  • Two dislikes?! For fuck sakes this is awesome!

  • Nobody Challenges the Chiefs!!!.....I mean Oilers...

  • Gretzky looks like he's still going through puberty!

From the camera angles, this looks like it's from the archives of one of the local Pgh stations...

  • Excellent footage.

  • I was there I can't believe this video exists. I have been telling stories about this game for years. The delay for the bench clearing brawl was about an hour long (Honestly). I was seated way up across the ice from the benches. I remember about a hundred people running down the stairs to get to the Edmonton players when the beer and sticks were flying between the fans and the players. Not much came of the fans vs. the players, but what a night!

  • @yenzerbob Awesome you were there! (Im from pittsburgh too). Stupid question I know but what finally started the brawl? Was it just rivalry and tension building up, or was a certain team just askin for a beating and werent there to play hockey. (I actually went to a game where it was clear one knew they were going to lose, so they just started fights for no reason). Or was it civil, and then someone or a team messed it up and then it went from there?

  • I was at the game - I remember ex-Pen Mike Corrigan running down from his seat trying to get to Sather on the bench. And when they finally got Kim Clackson off the ice, he climbed back over the glass to get back into it.

  • Woah, footage is clearer than... than any other old footage I've seen

  • I remember being at this game. I remember well that the brawl lasted at least an hour.... Gretsky spent the entire time alone on the bench with an ice pack. Everytime they almost had it stopped, Clackson and Semenko would get a look at eachother and it was on again. I really was a CLASSIC!

  • lmao "Pens defenseman Russ Anderson set team record for 51 penalty minutes"----omfg hahahaha how the fuck does that happen.

  • This is some great footage and nice quality. Good times

  • This is pretty awesome haven't seen much hockey like this lately!

  • Maybe those women shedding tears aren't just wet on the eyes.

  • I love how they clean that ice so good at the end!

  • old time hockey

  • haha love how the organist plays through the whole thing!!!

  • @gerardsgirl131 That was Vince Lascheid at that keyboard--truly one of the kind and still missed in the 'Burg to this day.

  • this was my first penguin game with my dad

  • 0:47 is priceless!

  • she looks like ann frank (thats not racist ) it just so happens that it looks liek her

  • OILERS ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • that was funny why was she cryin she never seen a fight maybe her hubby did bad......

  • Ahhhh....The good old days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • psst, go oilers =]

  • I'm an Oilers fan who likes the Penguins. Here is the honest truth: this was Gretzky's rookie season and there were always guys out trying to pick on him and hurt him, especially out in the West. The Oilers felt that in order to ensure Gretzky could play, that anytime he was touched the entire team had to respond. This brawl was as much about sending a message to the rest of the league about what would happen if you touched Gretzky, as it was about sending a message to the Penguins.

  • who was gretzky inviting to dance? he knows he can't dance so why would he even think about dancing? he would have gotten a nice little whuppin

  • GO OILERS GO!

  • 1:21 xDDD searching his things xD

  • lol

  • HAHA that chick crying! What the fuck's up with that lmao! I laughed for like five minutes!

  • Now Gretzky cant even coach to save his own life.

Should've just left hockey after he retired not ruin his rep as a horrible coach but an amazing player.

  • gretzky was actually a great coach

  • hahahahhahahaha why is she crying

  • ummm yeah rogerszaack or whatev the eff it is who is in the playoffs?

  • what great footage!

    where did you get this?

    does the entire game exist?

im from Pittsburgh and this game was/is still legendary.

    thanks for posting!

    OLD TIME HOCKEY RULES!!!!!

  • HAHAh, she's crying! I dig those penguin jerseys, they should start rockin' those ones again!

  • lol oilers destroyed the penguins... did u see the oiler dude kiking ass at uh... 0:21... the oilers guy on top of the ppens dude.. oilers is feeding him to the face/ go oilers !!!

  • @therising1

yea, i guess that's why they won 5 cups in 7 years

  • fuck you penguins are the second best

  • miss those days

  • holey the oilers bet the fuck out of then gay peguins

  • I was at this game and here is what happened: Kim Clackson sticked Gretzky and he faked being injured and fell to the ice (he later admitted that fact.) Oilers enforcer Semenko fought Clackson 3 times: once on the ice, once in the penalty box, once in the run way away from the ice. The brawl later re-erupted in the (I think) 3rd period focusing on Colin Campbell (Oilers) beating Greg Malone of the penguins. The Oilers won the game 5-2 and I missed the last bus because of the game's length.

  • hahahahha stupid woman shedding tears

us canadians all enjoy this i dont care who you are or where you live

  • what a corny scene with the woman crying..i can see the columists using this as a reason to stop fighting.

  • Random people crying hahaha, hockey is not a place to cry fuck

  • old school

  • whats glenn campbell doing in the oilers bench at the :39 mark??

  • thats glen sather

  • who ended up winning this game?

  • who cares!

as long as there's a brawl!!

  • you gotta love olde time hockey

  • OLD TIME HOCKEY! ha

  • LOL at :46 to :48. I think they thought they would be watching figure skating not hockey.

  • LMAO I had the same sentiment!

  • I missed this fight was at Super Bowl XIII in LA between the Steelers and the Rams. The summary of the game was about a foot long with all the penalties. I believe we lost the game 6-3.

  • At that time,No one other than the teams had the whole game. The game was not broadcasted on television anywhere. I was there 5 rows from the ice and have been looking for the whole game since 1980

  • no it happened on Jan 19, 1980

  • it must have been a long time ago, since the penguins have carolina blue and black or something like that instead of black and gold.

  • Was this last week?

  • look at Gretzky challenging that little girl who was crying! what a tough guy.

  • lol hahaha

  • good joke :)

  • Hehehe! IF she decided to drop the gloves with him, he would have soiled his diaper!

  • HERE WE GO OILERS HERE WE GO!!!!!

  • Very cool, thanks for posting Pittsburgh Hockey. Was this you who taped this footage?

  • :36

Wtf? You think pro Hockey players would have a little more decency then to go after fans.

  • what agro

  • wat year was this

  • Gretzky 100, Penguins 1, Final.

  • Wow, great clarity for this old video! I think this was probably one of the wildest brawls of all time, but the shame of it is that I don't think there's actually any broadcast footage of it. I actually have the following day's Pittsburgh Press sports page that talks about this brawl. That little broad in the audience even started crying!!! GREAT STUFF!!!!!

  • Old time Hockey wheres the foil???

  • There wasn't a whole lot of hockey in the old days of hockey. Just a lot of 22 on 22 fighting.

  • anyone notice that throughout is whole video, the organist never stops playing? lol!

  • Sather took no shit!

  • This looks like old 8mm amateur video.

    Great stuff.

  • The Penguins hit Gretzky, everyone went after the guy that hit him, and this happened. But when people do that for Crosby, then Crosby's a baby. How is someone who excells at their sport overrated?

  • exactly! people stop bitchin at crosby! ...........hes skilled and his teammates want to stick up for him!

  • didnt some one just level out gretzky and they all went at it?

  • penguins suck!

they have to avg 20 wins a season for three years so they can draft good. Crosby is overrated.

  • Yeah, Crosby is so overrated!!??!?

*Youngest player to ever win the Art Ross AND Heart trophies!

*Youngest player to ever be the team Captain!'

*Youngest team Captain to ever lead his team to the Stanley Cup Finals!!

But yeah, you're right, he's overrated!!

And the best is yet to come my friend...

  • not the youngest captain ever. brian bellows was. and no one has ever won the "Heart" Trophy.

  • who was that coach that went psycho??

  • Glen Sathers.

  • I meant SATHER.

  • stupid fans get involved. WOW how stupid is that!!! Probably just as stupid as some of the idiots that make stupid comments on youtube!!

  • fans only got involved because sather went after them with a water bottle. you just gonna sit there and let someone do that because they're a "professional"? No.

  • you my friend are the definition of "FAGGOT"

  • you my loser, are the definition of "ignoramus"

  • You mean a pile of sticks, or someone who's gay? Because I don't see either one of those being shown in my comment.

  • i wish this would happen now adays that would be awesome lol

  • I was at that game. Section D4 The fight lasted at least 10-15 minuets. I took them another 10 mins to call out all the penalties. Some one (I think Malone) grabbed someones skate and drug them with their face on the ice. It left a big half circle of blood on the ice. They were playing 4 on 4 for a while.

  • Wow! When's this from? I love the blue Pittsburgh uniforms before they went black and gold. Thanks for posting.

  • If I remember right, it was Feb or March of 1980.

  • Heh thats why you dont screw with malone =) Must have been neat to be there, and I love watching 4 on 4 hockey.

  • chris82redwingsfan shut the fuck up u ho red wings sucks my ass hole at hockey wow your fuckin talkin u like are probably 55 years old u probably just sit there on your couch an just watch the games u don't even play it so fuck you.

  • Gretzky was great, but Lemieux was the best. He could probably still play and score 40 at age 43.

  • oilers beat the blue right off their jerseys.

way to go slats. get in there.

  • f'ing. awesome.

  • perhaps this is lost footage from the greatest hockey movie ever made: slapshot

  • Thats what I was gonna say!! Thats all I could think of watching this - deleted scenes XD

    SEMENKO!!!

  • this is classic footage. period.

  • pittsburgh sucks. oilers would of kicked all their asses plus the fans

  • Touch Wayne and you see what happened, the little bitch got watched out for by his teammates and the refs. I will say he was ONE of the greatest, but to me Mario was the best, he had scrubs for teammates his first couple seasons and still put up decent points, plus he had no real heavyweight the way "The Grate-One" had. Go Pens!!!

  • Very COOL! good close up angles too

  • Wow, PittsburghHockey, whoever and wherever you are, thank you so much for posting this here. And the quality of the footage is indeed very good, considering that it is nearly 30 years old. Gretzky did get hit by the Clacker´s stick but that was because Gretzky was falling down at the same moment that Clackson raised the stick. No cheap shot.

Of course ol´ Cementhead would get in there whenever Wayner fell down to the ice, to exact retribution.

  • Excellent video. Easily the oldest Pens footage I've seen. Pretty cool to think you can still sit in that building at watch the Pens at work (for another year or two anyway).

  • I love seeing these old fights-my dad is Russ Anderson and I never got to see him play so these really mean a lot.

  • Your dad was a hard-rock defenseman for the Pens during the late '70s-early '80s. Wasn't the most skilled guy, but legit-tough and fearless, and he carved out a long career from that toughness.

  • I got your dad's autograph in December 1984 after a game in Vancouver - very nice fellow. Your dad wasn't a fast skater but, as the other poster said, more than made up for it with his toughness and durability.

  • You're dad was awesome, he just kicked ass and took names. #7 one of my heroes growing up in Pittsburgh!!

  • Haha yeah, when asked about my dad I tell people he pretty much fought on ice. These videos are great though, once I found them I made sure to show them to my boyfriend before he met my dad for the first time.

  • Is your dad back up in Minnesota??...What is he doing?

  • Hi Kate I remember your dad AND your mom. A former Miss America and a personality to match, she was sooooo nice to me and my girlfriend at the time. Tell her I said hello.

  • I love this. The video is so good, you rarely see anything this old look this good. And the old igloo scoreboard...brought back so many memories.

  • I never knew that happened. I was confused about the uniforms until I read lanceman's comment.

  • woodstock on ice

  • Poor Gary McAdam he is exhausted @ 53 secs..Vince Laschied at the arena organ!!!

  • Funny how you can see Colin Campbell (#6) jump right in @ the 11 second mark. I'd never seen this before. pretty cool. Is there unedited footage of this somewhere?

  • That is NOT Colin Campbell!!!..Itis Kim Clackson!!

  • In the Oiler uniform is #6 Colin Campbell. Go to the 16 second mark and pause it.

  • good call..missed it!!

  • Okay, I looked it up. This was not the Pens last game with the blue uniforms, it was against the Boston Bruins the next week at home where they last wore their blue and white uni's. Pens lost this game btw 5-2, then had to play the Oilers in Edmonton the following week. They lost up there too, but as I recall no major fights.

  • I was there at this game! It was the night before the Steelers played in superbowl XIV (Jan 19, 1980.) They would wear the new black and gold uniforms for the first time on January 30, so yeah, this could have been the last time for the blue uni's. I will always remember the clock being stopped at 12:27 (see scoreboard at the end of the video.)

  • If you were to look up 'old time hockey' in the Encyclopedia, this is the example they would use!

  • This is one of the last games (if not the last) that the Pens wore Blue and White.

  • Stackhouse should have busted his ankle!!

  • Love it! Old time hockey Baby!! I love Glen Sather trying to get it on with the fans. Classic!

  • Peddle is that you?

  • Yes it is buddy! You e-mailed me the video. Pretty cool vid. Go Pens and Oilers!!

  • You had to love Stacky. Dude didn't move fast enough to break ANYTHING. "Economy of Motion" was his motto. ^_^

  • That was the Last time the Penguins ever wore Blue Uniforms until the Winter Classic.

  • awesome stuff great upload

  • fantastic. you know it's been a great brawl when the women in the stands are crying....

  • If I'm not mistaken, I believe that was the night of the Super Bowl when Pittsburg beat the Rams (January 1980).

  • Doubt it. That was a full house. Everybody would be at home watching the Superbowl. Unless the Superbowl ended around 3 or 4 pm.

  • Great footage. At the 6 second mark, is that Clackson's supposed "vicious high stick" on Gretzky? I think it is & that's what led to the brawl.

Do you have the entire brawl on tape?

  • Wow - if that's what caused the scrap, that's hilarious. It's obviously unintentional ;)
